Who's Playing What For The Winter Season?

Once again, I've signed up for Too Many Teams:

Captaining 7.5 ladies combo
Playing 7.0 mixed and 8.0 mixed
Playing 4.0 ladies day (a step up from playing 3.5 last year)
Still playing that singles ladder

I'm going to pass on playing ladies 3.5 seniors. It's tempting, but I just cannot do five teams. That is insane.

I am hoping for a relaxing season. Most of the people on all of my teams are the same. I'll take a pasting in 4.0 ladies because we won't be a strong team, but I'll learn a lot . . .

Nothing for me. I promised hubs I'd take a USTA season off.

I am playing a small, in-house ladies day league with a mixture of 3.5 and 4.0 women. It's kind of a unique (and fun, I think) set-up. You can enter as just a doubles team/pair but we've chosen to play in a group of three. League of 10...so 8 or 9 matches at the same time every week. "Free" court and pre-arranged/minimal cost childcare. Sweet.

You're taking a USTA season off?

My husband would be thrilled if I would do that. Or give up tennis entirely. I'm sorry, I can't and won't do it. I would go completely mad. Or I would take up sky diving, skiing, or drinking strong alcoholic beverages beginning at 9 am.

I have taken off exactly two USTA seasons since I started playing, the fall and winter seasons following knee surgery. And I would have played the winter season had I known about winter combo doubles!

We're in our last week of "Fall" 4.0. It was certainly below freezing when I finished my singles match last week, and temps for this Thursday won't be any warmer.

Also my last week playing 4.0 for at least a year...

I am taking it easy for the winter. Just a usta mens team and alta mixed. With the temp not making it above freezing for 4 days in a row, I am starting to think I am a moron for playing winter leagues. It's gonna be cold come match time on Saturday.

Since I moved from the Twin Cities, there are no winter USTA leagues in Rochester, MN. Also there are no 5.0 leagues so I'm currently SOL. However, now that my NTRP rating went from national benchmark to computer, I can at least appeal (and hopefully be successful) to try and get back on a USTA summer 4.5 league.

No USTA winter leagues here in the Denver area. At least none that I know of. No tournaments in December and January either; a few tourneys in February; none in March. Things won't start picking up until April

I have a question for the people who say it's too cold to play or say that there are no winter leagues.

Are there indoor courts in your area? Or is the cost to prohibitive?

I live in Kansas, and near me there is a public facility with indoor courts, which is great to have, although it's very hard to get court time there.

We do have winter leagues that are indoor, usually we have 8-12 team matches in each league.

I think the reason there are no winter leagues in Rochester is due to distance. At 4.5, generally there are 2 Rochester teams and the other two teams are in towns which are 1 hour plus travel time. Travelling time through the winter snow probably is the reason that they don't have them.

Right now, i'm just practicing to get ready for Sectionals 2010 Tri Level which are being held no January 14, 15, and 16. Then, there are no leagues in our area until Seniors start, usually April/March. So, I am working on my game till sectionals; playing sectionals and then putting a 3.5 sr. team together for April/March. I'd love it if tri level team goes to nationals (i know wishful thinking), but if it does, it will make it really hard for me to manage sr. 3.5 team which runs at the same time as nationals for trilevel in March.

We don't have much in my district in the winter due to bad weather (only one 4 court indoor court) and having to travel an hour or two in bad weather to compete.

The closest indoor courts to me are about a 30 minute drive (double that in rush hour) & are tough to get a consistent time. I'm in the southeast so we have days that the weather allows outdoor play. Last week I played once outdoor and once indoor.

My plan is to try to hit once per week until March. Until then, I'm at the gym weekdays from 6am-7am and again after work 5pm-6pm and once on the weekend unless I can hit. I figure if I stay fit through the winter months, I'll be ahead of most around here.

Here in the UK, I'm playing a mini-league. Only 6 of us then we move up to the next level I think. Fun for the next few weeks.

Might sign up for a proper league if I can find one! We don't do tennis in the cold here!

Not too many indoor courts and they're usually fully booked up.

Sorry to go on a tangent but: 1 hour of gym in the morning and another hour in the evening, every day? That's a lot... what's your workout plan like, and if you don't mind sharing, how old are you?
