Who's results/performance was more impressive at chasing the CYGS: Federer 2006 or Djokovic 2015 ?

A Calendar Grand Slam is about winning all 4 slams in a year. Winning 3 slams in a year in any order is not important. What's important is how he/she fares against the field in 28 matches. At the end of the year, the performance and result out of the 4 slams dictate who was a superior player that year.


Federer 2006 outclass Djokovic 2015 in all 4 slams combine:

1) Federer was forced to a 5 set 1 time, Djokovic 3(edge Federer)
2) Federer handed out 10 bagels, Djokovic 4(edge Federer)
3) Federer won 15 matches in straight set, Djokovic 19(edge Nole)
4) Both player's loss were at the FO final in 4 sets(edge even)

This comparison is closer to the one with Federer 2006 vs. 2021 in which Federer was superior over Djokovic by a landslide base-on the stats.

While both had a phenomenal performance and result across all 4 slams, I give Federer a slight edge to Federer 2006 over Nole 2015, added to the fact that he face clay god in the FO final while Djokovic had Wawrinka.

Now this is an actually respectable comparison. Obviously if we're talking about results alone, they'd be equal because their attempts to win the CYGS were stopped at the French Open but they still went on to win the last two Slams of the year.

AO, both were pretty mediocre for some parts of it and required a bit of help from the field to secure the wins. I think Djokovic played the outright worst match between them in his error-filled SF against Wawrinka but Fed was shakier throughout the whole tournament (I think he was still recovering from his injury in the 2005 indoor season). Probably gonna hand this one to Djokovic but it's quite close.

RG, neither was particularly good. Djokovic put in a convincing performance against Nadal in the QF (even if said Nadal played horribly) but the SF wasn't so good and the final was incredibly lackluster from him, a fact that gets overshadowed by Wawrinka's remarkable performance. Meanwhile, Fed had a fairly straightforward road to the final and played a great first set in the final. But then things fell apart and Nadal feasted on his backhand even more than usual. He was somewhat close to forcing a five-setter, but there was a sense of inevitability that Nadal would close it out in the end. I personally believe Fed played the better final and would hand the comparison to him for that reason, but there's not too much between them.

W, both guys played their best Slam of the year imo. Djokovic had his best Wimbledon in general here imo, despite going down 0-2 to an inspired (imagine that) Anderson in an early round. I won't say Fed played his best Wimbledon here because 2003 and 2005 were also extremely good, but it is a strong contender. Ultimately, it comes down to peak Federer vs. peak Djokovic on grass because that's what this argument is essentially about. There's no way anyone shouldn't pull for Fed here unless they're incredibly fond of the 3-1 argument.

USO, I don't think Djokovic was actually all that impressive. I mean, he played well, but he showed a few vulnerabilities along the way, especially in the final (but 2015 Fed only took advantage 4 out of 23 times). There aren't such flaws to be found with Federer's 2006 win here imo. He dropped a couple of sets, but I do feel that this was one of his two best US Open wins (the other is 2004). I think Fed was overall more impressive across these respective US Opens, perhaps to an even greater extent than Wimbledon because Djokovic played worse here compared to that tournament.

Nah. The chase for the CYGS for 2006 Federer and 2015 Djokovic ended at Roland Garros. But I agree that Federer's ended run was more impressive. He lost to Nadal in the final, while Nole lost to Wawrinka.

not all titles are equally valuable. nole, 2015, had 10 big titles (3 slams, wtf and 6 masters) while fed, 2006, had "only" 8 (3 slams, wtf, 4 masters). nole had more points (if we recalculate points system for respective seasons) and he had positive h2h vs his biggest rivals while fed had a 2-4 record vs rafa (and 0-1 vs baby muzza). so noles 2015 was undoubtedly more dominant than feds 2006!

USO 06 final Roddick is basically like USO 13 final Djokovic (probably a little better). 2 good sets and 2 below par ones. If you don't rate this Roddick, you can't rate 15 USO federer either (he wasn't that much better, if at all)

maybe I need to go rewatch it. I do think he was great in the 2nd set but crumbled when it mattered basically.

I have a dim view of Roddick in general. Probably due to some childhood resentment of seeing the build up on TV only to see him go down quietly every time. I haven't seen that match in quite awhile.

Fed had to face the king of clay at his peak and still gave himself a chance with 4 sets

Djokovic's 2015 was more of joke. Nadal won three titles (one 500 and two 250s) and would end the year #5. What remained as his opposition were pigeon Murray, should've-been pigeon Wawrinka, and a player whose best season was nine years earlier.

There literally hasn't been a USO finalist who hasn't crumbled in some form or other in like 20 years.

Out of these, old man Agassi probably put forth by far the most respectable performance as his crumble was for easily explainable reasons he couldn't really control at the time.

As Djokovic said after US 15 when asked about being 1 match short of it he said if he won RG maybe other 2 slams don’t play out the same.
