Who's the Most Intimidating Looking Player?

Raonic. He has that alpha-male-on-the-savannah vibe.

Great stuff.

Wawrinka because of his acne scars and thick build. He intimidated Tsonga once and Tsonga is bigger and looks like Ali. He just stayed quiet sitting there taking it from Wawrinka once at one of the slam events.

Yeah, but Tsonga is French.

Sampras had shoulders broad enough to be able to balance an Ostrich egg on each one but the biggest threat from him would be the likelihood of him boring you to death. Intimidation factor 0/10.
del-Potro's a big guy but too sedentary to be threatening. Intimidation factor 2/10.
Marin Cilic looks like a villain from a Bond film but is actually quite fluffy away from the court. Intimidation factor 4/10.
Marat Safin is a beast of a man and had that crazy air of someone who might try to fight you or **** you. Intimidation factor 7/10.
Diego Schwartzman is short but he has the Tommy DeVito short guy anger clearly brimming and the air of someone happy to break your legs to bring you down to his height, then once you're down there yank an eye out and **** the socket. Intimidation factor 12/10.

The most intimidating player on tour is Tomic! You know its true, cuz he looks just like one of those high school jock type bullies from the 90's...LOL And thats even backed up further with his psychotic unstable mentality...

Maybe not his actual look but it's intimidating when Federer walks on court. It takes 5 minutes for the announcer to list his achievements. Brutal.

Raonic is anything but intimidating. He's just like Milos, from Seinfeld.

I agree, and I think Sysyphus does too. That's why it was so funny. Great gif of Raonic. Huge savannah swagger.

@wangs78 I don't recall the linesperson or chair changing their decisions. How was that intimidating ?
The lines person literally ran to the umpire to report Serena’s threats. That’s how intimidated she felt.

Carlos the umpire would not have issued the second violation had Serena not been overly aggressive and intimidating.

Maybe a dictionary is in order?

Guys like Groth are big and brutish but it's mostly bark. A lot of the players are tall. That huge serve seems lethal but he never makes it out of the first week. As an average Top 100 player you have a very good chance of beating him. Imagine you're a long time journeyman who's won a couple of rounds and you're serving first in your next match:

Fed in his prowling return stance where he spins the racquet around is fairly intimidating anyway, he has the air of a seasoned expert, but a lot of it is knowing who he is, and that you're probably going to have a bad day.

Djokovic when he puts his fist up and looks to his player box after winning a rally gets an honourable mention too. That has to take the wind out of your sails as an opponent.

The behemoth that is Serena or Stosur.

For the men all-time it was maybe Karlovic

He usually had decent muscle mass for a guy his height and that serve I've sat right in front of it several times and you think wrong move you're getting drilled.

Mikhail Youzhny isn’t getting mentioned much, why not? He was scary, just looking at him and his presence.

Other than him, when Djokovic smiles it’s basically game over.

When Federer starts spinning his racket during his return stance that’s gotta be intimidating.

Nadal psychologically beats you from the warmup by his no nonsense attitude and his get down to business look from the first point on.

That's the definition of effective intimidation. If I stand up to a bully, that bully is not an effective intimidator.
Ah, effective intimidation. Sneaky.
But it's okay as long as it doesn't work. Bullying is fine if they stand up to you. Threats are fine as long as the person being threatened doesn't kiss your feet. Nice to know

The thread is about appearing intimidating but I guess if we're talking about which players actually actively bully others then Serena gets first place :p

This answer resonates with me!

As far as giving one’s opponent an intimidating glare, Cilic does a decent job at that but I’m not sure it’s very effective! :)

The 90’s were GOAT intimidation years. Off the top of my head:

Magnus Larsson
Magnus Gustaffson
Enqvist
Philippoussis
Goran

I mean, those names alone invoke some kind of barbarian invasion.

As for the women, Pierce, Sabatini had some pretty big guns, Davenport.

Gary Duane

G.O.A.T.
Karlovic.

7 foot dude from the Balkans.
YES! If that guy was across the net from you, you would not want to **** this man off. You would not know that for the most part he is a gentle giant. By the way, most really big guys are gentle. They learn to be gentle because they learn in their teens what could happen if they lose their cool and swing.

Also, always look out for the guys who are usually quiet and civilized.

We had a big hound dog named Que Ball. Across the street from us was a toy puddle named Charlie. Charlie always barked, and yapped, and postured. One day he barked at our dog one time too many, so QB just lifted his leg and let loose.

Connors and JMac were both like Charlie, yap dogs. The most potentially intimidating guys are big, because you don't know what they are capable of if you push them too far.

Hewitt when he pushed himself with a loud "Come on!" after his opponent's double fault.

LOL what? That's like saying a mouse was intimidating because he squeaked loudly. Hewitt looks like an angry midget half the time. He's not intimidating.

I would say Wawrinka has an intimidating look about him, he just needs to stop yelling "come on" because it sounds like an old man with asthma. I would also say Djokovic has a pretty mean look about him when he gets annoyed. To be honest tho, there is no real "bad boy" in tennis and none of them look overly intimidating.

Soderling, as cocky as you can get. Tipsarevic in his prime with the dark glasses. And Clement Arnaud with the dark glasses. But Wawrinka in psycho mode beats them all.
