Whose game is more beautiful? Murray or Djokovic?

Both possess a breathtaking array of shots. It's always a delight seeing their matches. Sharp shot making, consistent depth, solid movement. Markings for the future of tennis. Their model is what seems likely to stay. What dissimilarities if any, do you see in the game of either? and prefer?

I would personally like to see an RG rematch. It would make for some great tennis, for sure.

In broad terms, Noel's game is more fluid, but Murray relies far more on variety which is interesting to me.

Pretty much a toss-up. Both can be appealing, and both can be tedious, like when playing each other..

Ultimately I prefer Murray

In terms of stroke aesthetics, it's more or less equal between them to my eyes. In regards to the application of their games, I suppose I prefer Novak's although I wouldn't call it beautiful; his command of the baseline, the seamless transitions from defense to offense and back, and his adaptability is a clinic in the art of the baseliner; it is balanced and effective, qualities that resonate with me.

I would prefer to watch Andy at his best, than Novak. When Andy plays very well, his game is top 5 in terms of entertainment for me. There's something about his game, when playing well, that just amazes me at how easy it all looks, and how he has his opponent on a string more so than most players at their best. I like Murray's serve and backhand aesthetics more too.

Utterly irrelevant poll when the option 90% of tennis fans would chose for this question would be:

NEITHER.

I admire both of their work ethics and fitness. I admire Novak's mental strength (which he only developed post-2010) tremendously. I like Andy's personality. But neither have beautiful games, get real.

Djokovic is an excellent grinder and can hit winners that compete with the best but his variety is not one of his big appeals. I always think of him more like a dog playing fetch and thats not overly amusing for longer than 15mins.

Murray on the other hand has more interesting way of playing, passive then will suddenly hit a winner. Nice slice BH and CC shots, fantastic lobs too. When he's on, he is far superior in terms of interesting tennis

Actually both of them can be pretty fun to watch, just not when playing against each other.

That said I enjoy watching Murray more than I enjoy watching Djokovic. A little less robotic.

I prefer ND game and strokes particularly. AM does have a game that I can see why it would appeal more on a purely aesthetic level

In the 90's to the 2000's, I can't recall anyone ever bringing up whose game was more beautiful. I recall them talking about how the flamboyant Agassi had a great return and timing on his strokes, or how clutch Sampras' serve was in the pressure moments, or how strong Safin was. I don't recall anyone trying to find beauty in it. I don't want to see beauty on the tennis court. I want to see athletes do impossible things with their mind and body and blow me away with their audacious shotmaking and desire to achieve greatness. I think beauty should be resigned for the opera or ballet.

Overall, I'd say Murray. Not too much of a fan of his service motion, but I like his FH, BH and volleys. And he can smash, unlike Djokovic;)

When everything is clicking, I'd take Djokovic over Murray. Djokovic is more aggressive than Murray, and looks to dictate points more often. Murray has more variety, but he is also more passive than Novak more often than not. But overall, their games are quite similar, that's why their match up is not very exciting to watch.
But still, when both are playing well, Djokovic's balanced game is more entertaining, than Murray's.

OP, almost had been going ;)

On a serious note, I don't find eithers game particularly aesthetic - there's a few shots between the two of them that I do think could qualify as 'beautiful' one is Andy's backhand. The flat trajectory of that shot looks really awesome to me, beautiful in a brutal sort of way. I also like Novak's service motion.

To me this amounts to splitting hairs as I don't find either of their games to be particularly aesthetic. I can name no less that a dozen players who have prettier games than both of these guys. Djokovic appears to move around the court more efficiently, smoother, and requiring less effort than Murray. When it comes to strokes, Djokovic's forehand looks better, while Murray's backhand looks better. Murray has a better looking net game (volleys and overheads), as well as slices, lobs and drop shots. So I suppose overall I'd give the edge to him. But his forehand has always looked very awkward and inefficient to me. But there is nothing more boring than watching these two guys play each other.

First of all, he is not stretching his wrist. Second of all, I didn't say anything about him stretching his wrist. Thirdly and most importantly, I was neither thinking about nor alluding to his wrists when I made that comment. I was alluding to his left palm. I was alluding the fact that he can get so close to the ground that he can put his palm flat on the ground. I don't know how you got "stretching his wrists" from that.

Why do people do this sh*t? If you don't understand what a person is getting at, ASK! Don't extrapolate your own nonsense and run with it.

Similar styles but Murray on form has a certain finesse to his game that Djokovic lacks. I've seen him play with slightly more variety as well.

Neither is particularly interesting, but Murray has greater variety and a more aesthetically pleasing backhand. Neither forehand is a beauty but Djokos is better
