This is my first post but I figure I would get the best answer here. I have been selling tennis products for about six months now and I would say atleast 40% of all my sales have been to people with the last name of Nguyen. Can anyone help me out and explain why that might be? Ive never seen anything like it with sales before. Thanks! :)

It is one of the more popular Vietnamese family names. Co-incidentally, everyone I have ever met with that surname was a really nice person.

Oh because great great grandpa Nguyen was a big tennis player. He used to routinely beat Bill Tilden when he went on tour in the Far East. One of those long lost tennis stories under-reported in the Western media.

Wow, I actually just noticed that your name says Abe Nguyen, I always pronounced it "Aben guy en" in my head while reading it.

the number 1 in NJ's last name is Nguyen, just to support this. He also won some a Penn State tournament, i don't really know too much about that, though.

-Are you selling locally or internet? Vietnamese are concentrated in certain parts of the country.

-Lot's of Vietnamese play tennis.

-Nguyen is the most common surname. It is MUCH more common than Smith is America percentagewise. Most estimates are that 40% of Vietnamese have this surname. Smith is the most common surname in America but is only 1.0% of the population.

I think lots of Vietnamese play tennis because you don't have to be big and strong physically to be good at tennis as you do with many other sports (e.g., football, basketball, volleyball, hockey, etc.)

BTW, which is more common?

Nguyen amongst Vietnamese?

Kim amongst Koreans?

Chang amongst Chinese?

quick google search finds that:
40 percent of Vietnamese people have Nguyen as their surname.
22 percent of Korean people have Kim as their surname.
10 percent of Chinese people have Wang as their surname.

I doubt Smith/Williams are as common as these.
/edit-- Smith: 1% Williams: 0.7% in the US

The name Nguyễn is estimated to be used by almost 40% of the Vietnamese population. The top three names are so popular because peopled tended to take the family name of kings, to show their favor and loyalty. Over many generations, the family names became permanent.

1. Nguyễn (38.4%)
2. Trần (11%)
3. Lê (9.5%)

We have a pretty big Vietnamese-American community here in Minneapolis, and certain courts in the city are often full all summer with Nguyens playing doubles. You've never heard so much laughter and good spirits coming from a tennis court. They are 15 to 85, and they all play together, having a blast. I've never seen an argument or anything but the best sportsmanship.

The only problem is this one guy who thinks he is number one in the world, and claims he used to date Kournikova.

[wink]

there is also a big community here in washington and its the same thing. If you goto a certain parks and public courts all you'll see is vietnamese people. You dont ever just see one, because if one comes then the whole family comes, and they will bring their friends who will in turn bring their families who will in turn bring their friends and just take over the park. Great group of people though...I love them.

1. Trinh 2. Tran 3. Do 4. Pham 5. Le 6. Le (5 and 6 are brothers) 7. Be (only person who's not Vietnamese; Chinese/half something else) 8. Luong

Funnier yet is how non-viet try to pronounce it. New-goo-wen or new-jew-in. hehehe. My middle name is Nguyen btw. There is actually 2 or 3 iterations of that name. Same spelling but slightly different pronounciation. I currently live in Vietnam and I swear there's probably only a dozen names that you can name your child so you can have 10 friends with the exact same name.

To all my viet brothers and sisters overseas, be proud of your name and don't sell out and take an English name...unless your name is Phuc or Dung.

Mark down another Nguyen. I think tennis really fits in with our physique, you don't see alot of Nguyen's playing football, except Dat, or anything where you have to be a haas.

I must remind my Vietnamese friend of someone, he sometimes calls me both of those names, although usually both at once, and not in that order.
And after we play he always says, I Nguyen, you lose. Annoying.

I think Jessica Nguyen is a great player. she will lead Stanford to the NCAA championships this year.

But why is that?

Why can't parents just start making up new names? Like how American celebrity parents tend to make up new, unique names for their children.

Vietnamese names have to have a meaning so parents don't dare make up a name or chose a name without one so I think they just recycle whatever is already used or they know.

Well, I'd say it's time to shake things up and get with the times and start coming up with some new names or else it's going to become like the Geroge Foreman family where all 8 sons are names "George". ;-)

In Chinese culture any word can be used for first name. Of course parents usually choose the ones with good meaning and utterance.

not a Nguyen, but a Ngo...but then again, if I hear somebody speak Vietnamese, I bet at least 1 in 4 will have a Nguyen last name, to think of it.. my phone list do have lot of Nguyen's, hehe...

No one answered why it's so common yet. Look back into history and read into the Nguyen dynasty (or just google something similar).
