Why are some players' residence different from their nationality?

Matthew 6:21 - For where your treasure (money) is, there your heart will be also.

Djokovic tries to act like he loves his country, but in reality, Nadal loves his country more.

No wonder why Gulbis, Janowicz said that djokovic acts and nad is genuine.

Do we have consensus here?

ANd you concluded this because of where he pays his income tax?? If I could pay my taxes somewhere else so the US government freaks do not waste it on political and military crap, I would... However, having lived in the EU for 3 years, I still had to pay Uncle Sam even though I earned $0 in the USA. That must be "true love" according to your logic...

Novak, however, donates those taxes to Serbian kids and the right cause in Serbia. How much did Nadal donate to Spanish unfortunate kids?

Is that a fact that corruption in Serbia is 50x the one in Spain?

Also, the fact that Serbia has corruption can't be used as an excuse. If he can't stand to watch corruption, why not change his nationality then?

It's obvious that he's just trying to avoid high tax regardless of whether Serbia has corruption or not.

You are not good at this or simply...(don't want to be too direct).
WHy he keeps his nationality?? Because he is a proud Serb, loves his people and that ABSOLUTELY has nothing to do with where he pays taxes or what political orientation or corruption level is... Seems to me for you it is all about money?
That is also why I kept my Serbian citizenship when I took American 15 years ago...

Do you think people have the same expectation for you and Novak?

If Obama were to do the same, do you think that is OK?

Djokovic is like a president figure for Serbs so this is more disapppinting.

What! New York has some of the highest taxes anywhere in the US. It is definitely not a tax haven.
depends on who you are talking about. as far as foreign capitol goes yes it is.......same thing with london. why do you think so many oligarch russians and oil sheiks flock there?

He is great sport figure, and good role model for young people, but he is not like president figure for Serbs, you should not speculate about things that you don't have clue about.

So is avoiding tax by changing his residency something a good role model does?

Like it or not troll ,he is a great role model for young people not only in Serbia but all over the world.
Great people always have hopeless haters like you.

The guy just keep digging deeper hole for himself with every speculative post. Especially to me after I pointed out where I come from...

I know, but I fail to understand why bunch of this Nadal fangirls/fanboys think that Nadal would become somehow better than he already is, as a tennis player/human being, if they defame someone else, and bringing amount unverified accusations against others.Since Novak is big threat to their idol , he is major target.

Tax in Spain is higher than in Serbia.

Nadal earns more than Djokovic.

Nadal pays tax to Spain, Djokovic to Monaco (much lower tax)

What does this fact tell?

That Nole and Birdman are greedy sobs. They hate tennis, they are in it for the money. And it shows how they badmouth Fed all the time and don't even care about past greats.

True. They feel insecure and for good reasons. They know deep down that when both at their best, Nole is better player on every surface. We have 2011 to prove it.

Nole is better, more complete and has more talent. Rafa only has the edge on mentality, his gamesmanship somehow makes Nole melt down a bit vs him. That's it.

Also Nole was a late bloomer, he discovered his gluten allergy too late. And still even when Nole was away till 2011, he is close at the h2h to Rafa.

That's why he gets targeted by Nadal fans. They feel the threat. They know Rafa only has clay over Nole. Off clay Nole leads the h2h and slam count. Which shows, Nole is better player.

Guys, remember TDK? Even him who is biggest Rafa worshiper admitted that Nole might be better player.

We don't really know where most players live. Quite often they have an 'official residence' but spend very little,if any,of their time there.

I was wondering why some players are listed as residents of a country different from their nationality? Here is the top 8 players with their nationality and residence.

1. Nadal (ESP): Spain
2. Djokovic (SRB): Monaco
3. Wawrinka (SUI): Switzerland
4. Federer (SUI): Switzerland
5. Ferrer (ESP): Spain
6. Berdych (CZE): Monaco
7. Del Potro (ARG): Argentina
8. Murray (GBR): England

what is your opinion of this fact?

have you ever paid taxes?

those guys make a lot of money and that is the reason.Borg already did it by the middle 70´s.Monaco was popular thanks to him

What??? What does this mean:'his gamesmanship somehow makes Nole melt down a bit vs him' ????

No more banking secret in Switzerland.
Check for Federer to do some big moves

??? What are they bringing in. I'm a bit ignorant about Swedish tax laws but from what I read they don't operate like a country, each "state" has it's own laws and regulations in the same way USA has very different taxes from state to state, which the internet is kind of destroying.

General comment

I'm in Aust and our previous richest man (late Kerry Packer) under our semi socialist system was paying 8% tax, so even in 1st world semi socialist country tax can be averted. He stood in front for a senate inquiry regarding his tax evasion and flew past, it's all legal. These players have no effort avoiding their local taxes, all their income is obtained overseas and can be relocated to whatever country they want either as a company or individual, without full disclosure to their residential country, though I believe they still pay local taxes on prize money. Federer's income will like be from US & Asia more than Switzerland, therefore Switzerland has no chance of seeing his "real" money, it's in foreign product sales.

Djokovic left home at 12yrs from what I read, he might not have as much personal attachment to Serbia as other players to their homeland. But he's Serbian, and from what I've seen they have attachment to their homeland stronger than most.

Yes I have paid taxes.

so are you saying making a lot of mondy gives him an excuse to avoid paying taxes at his country?

Higher popularity sbould be followed by higher responsibility which is not the case for Mr. Djocovic and that is probably why he is not as liked as Delpo or even Murray.

In the US yes.
In the UK too. And on 2/52ths of their endorsement contracts. Agassi sued over that - and lost. The only reason London got the Summer Olympics was by agreeing not to enforce that for the world's athletes.

The issue is where the money goes and how much is enough/reasonable.

It amuses me when players say how much it means to them to represent their country in the Olympics when they love their country so much they... don't even live there.

Haha you honestly think Nadal was playing his best ever tennis in 2011??? XD

And I'm not sure where you get the idea that Novak is a complete player? He has dreadful volley's, has the worst overhead in the top 100, can't slice, struggles to deal with slice and can't generate his own pace on his backhand.

And if the gluten allergy was the key to Novak becoming this all court super player, why has he not had results in 2012, 2013 or 2014 like those in 2011?

1) what is this "defamation" and/or "unverified accusation" you are talking about?

2) were you similarly outraged by the unsubstantiated accusations of PED usage levelled at Nadal?

Nadal was playing some of his best tennis in 2011, no doubt.

Djokovic's volleys are quite good actually, especially when he's confident. He has hit a few incredible drop volleys off a topspin dipper from Nadal. His overhead is not great, but making that a big factor is ridiculous. He can slice, I don't know where you get your ideas of how he plays from. Finally, Djokovic has one of the best backhands on tour and he can create a lot of pace consistently.

You speak of inconsistency in Djokovic's play, when Nadal is well known for his inconsistent form. Djokovic hasn't been knocked out of a Grand Slam in Round 2 twice and that consecutively.

Nadal was playing dreadfully in 2011, he struggled to get any depth on his ground strokes which allowed Djokovic to stand up on the baseline, the same thing happened in the WTF 2013 final, and the Madrid final a few days ago. Nadals depth of shot is crucial for his success.

Precisely, hitting 'a few' incredible drop volleys does not make someone a complete player. Far from it. Djokovic cannot slice, he almost falls over forward on the rare occasion he tries to hit one. AI agree Djokovic has a great back hand, but to lack at least a decent slice makes me question how complete he is. And I completely agree, he has a great backhand but he struggles to generate his own pace on it.

I'm not comparing anything to Nadal? Yes Djokovic has been very consistent at Grand Slams, I completely agree.
