Why are there 4 knots?

I just got a Babolat PD+ from racquet depot and I ordered it with excell premium 16 (single set, no hybrid.) It arrived today with excell premium 17 and it is tied off in 4 places instead of the usual 2. Does this mean that they used two half-sets to string my racket. I would have bought from tennis warehouse but I had a discount coupon for racquet depot. Should I be able to get a full refund for this mistake? The shrinkwrap is still on the handle.

Not a mistake, a two-piece job was used, instead of a 1-piece. 2-piece is the way to string hybrids, and also if the customer wants different tensions on the mains and the crosses. More convenient for stringers to do everything two-piece.

It's a 2 piece string job. Regardless, if I do hybrids or a full set-up, I usually use a two piece string job. The reason for this is because the mains and crosses are strung at different tension.

I know that is the way to string hybrids but i did not order a hybrid and the stringbed feels stiff as a board. I have another pd with a single set string at the same tension and it feels much better.

Why would they string the mains and crosses at different tensions if I did not ask them to?

DThing,

Stringing Two Piece is perfectly acceptable. And unless you specifically requested One Piece ahead of time, I see no issue whatsoever.

Although a Two Piece job would indeed a good idea when Stringing two different Tensions, that does not mean that your Racquet was indeed Strung at different Tensions.

And although I am sure that the String Bed might feel like a board to you, I personally would not attribute that to being Strung one or two piece, but rather the Tension used.

To elaborate, depending on what Machine was used etc. one shops tension might feel different than the same tension at another shop. It is why I stay with the same Stringer, to limit the variables as much as possible.

Lastly, if the other Racquet you have is not freshly Strung it might have lost a slight amount of Tension, also causing a variable.

Hope that helped,
John

The only mistake is that they gave you a thinner gauge. As a rule I tell people to let their LOCAL person string the frame. My 60 lbs may not be the same to you as your usual stringer.

The reason for the 4 Knots is so that the crosses can be installed top down which is generally felt to be less stressful on the frame.

I guess the only way you could get a refund is if you asked RD. Sounds to me like you should get, at least, a refund on the stringing. Then cut it out and put what you want with a local stringer.
I typically prefer to get my racquets unstrung and then deal with the stringing myself, or have someone local do it if my stringer is packed up (as it had been for a couple years).

There should be no reason for concern with this. Almost any racquet can be strung one or two piece from the same set of string and there is no difference in the way they play. The most significant difference is cosmetic.

DThing,

There is one more item of note I wanted to add.

When I first read this post, somehow I missed the fact that it was Strung with the incorrect Gauge of String.

If it were me, and that happened, I wouild indeed call the Stringer to politely address the issue.

John

Hi,

Just because you have a two-piece it does not always mean the mains and crosses are strung at different tensions. They can be.. but you can also string one piece with different tensions on the crosses and mains. Sometimes it is just a choice to do a one piece vs a two piece.. other times the frame is designed to be strung one way or another.. or both.

Steve

It's probably best that it WAS a 2-piece stringjob. Not knowing if the stringer knew how to string ATW, or ever used ATW patterns, it's better to have a 2-piece than to string the crosses from bottom to top. He gave you the wrong gauge string though, which would upset me if I were a stringbreaker, but it's no reason to consider sending the racket back.
