Why do we call him Sascha when he's real name has nothing to do with his nickname?
Thanks
Thanks
I prefer the Alexander. It seems like he is a conquerer of all thingsSacha or Sascha, a common Russian nickname for Alexander.
it is from the sandr part of aleksandr. the sa of sandr with the sha diminutive gives you sasha.

You mean like Dolgopolopov ?I prefer the Alexander. It seems like he is a conquerer of all things
I'm not sure why he doesn't just make his nickname his official ATP name, as Mischa did (his real name is Mikhail).
Why call him Zeverev???![]()
Let him win 20 slams and we can call him Zvereverer! He's so tall they had to add an extra letter to his uniform to fill up the space.
It's a Russian thing

The root cause for Putinist aggression towards Germany...to collect taxes on Zverev earnings and make Russia great again!![]()
Then he'll just be Zvrv, like the goat Fedr.

Apparently they also add just "ya"...NiKOLai becomes Kolya. Here is an explanation from the web wrote by someone else:
It's a Russian nickname. To make something a nickname in Russian, you add "-sha" to it. Russian for Alexander = Aleksander. They drop the Alek and change "Sander" to "Sasha" to make it a nickname.
Same thing works for "Misha" for "Mikael" or "Dasha" for "Darya."
Side fact: adding "-ka" in there makes it extra-cutesy. So, "Sashka" is a cutesy version of the nickname, or "Mishka," etc. The funny thing is that the Russian word for water is "voda", so "vodka" is literally a cute little nickname for water! Funny stuff!

Zverev is russian and NOT German, as much as some people would like him to be. Hence the Sasha diminutive.
And please keep Putler (Putin+Hitler for the inquiring minds) and his lowbrow neosoviet propaganda out of these lovely tennis forums please, thank you very much.
I am not the one who started polluting the forums with distasteful political propaganda and it is my opinion that such posts have no place here.
BTW, for some reason I am under the impression that you live/work in the US. Why didn't you emigrate to Russia if you like their "stuff" so much. Oh, wait...
Anyway, moving on.
Sasha identify himself as a German. Something he has said several times.Of course he is Russian.
As for Putin (or, as you like to call him 'Putler'), I'd heed your advice if you didn't engage in a similar lowbrow neocon propaganda yourself![]()

If you want to go back in history, Sasha might be Swedish.
Let's just all agree that Andy Murray is, currently at least, a dick.
