Why couldn't Ferrer win a match vs Federer?

Ferrer on Clay at his peak was 4th best behind the 3 goat amigos but Ferrer has beaten Djokovic and Nadal, he beat Murray often before Murray became more of a complete player on Clay in 2015. Was it a match up problem? What part of the match up made Ferrer not even pick up a victory vs Federer? Looking at highlights between the two Federer seemed to have so much more time on the ball and wasn't phased by Ferrer's peppering of Federer's backhand side. Ferrer's serve seems to get abused by Federer also. Looking at Ferrer's career, he won the most matches without winning a slam, he was a such a solid player who utilised his abilities.

ferrer didn't hit quite hard enough to rush him, which meant roger could play 'freely' which is when he's definitely most dangerous. also, i think his ball just sat up exactly in roger's strike zone, just gave him a good look at groundies. also from a serving standpoint his relative short reach meant roger could yank him around a lot. just a matchup thing i guess.
