Why did Federer disappear after winning AO 2010?

Amazing how close Nadal/Federer were to meeting at 2010 and 2011 US Open Finals!
And 2013 US Open when Robredo destroyed Federer... would have met Nadal in the next round.
Truly tragic

He had a virus that year IIRC, and his results took a hit. That was the first year he lost before the SF in a Slam since 2004.

But either way, his prime was about over by then. AO was pretty much the last tournament he played in his prime, though he got close in 2011 and 2012 at times.

Was that the last moment of his peak?

He was nowhere until the WTF at the end of the year.
Simple. His form dipped a bit and Nadals reached a peak.
He won the AO alright. Now coming to clay season he did well in Madrid and was looking good in FO too. Then the soderling match turned from sunny to cloudy and damp and sod was just superb after that. At wimbledon he had a back problem and berd was playing good.
At US Open he was not that keen to winning the second semi. Playing a rampant Nadal immediately the next day was in back of his mind.
In WTF it all came together and he beat the other top 3.
If you see the subsequent years its the same story. If he plays well, he gets stopped by a top player mainly djokovic. And sometimes he has some strange loss

Funnily enough, it had very little to do with Nadal and Djokovic since Fed finished 5-2 vs them in 2010. So much for the myth that Fed didn't decline, Djokodal just got better.
Exactly. If you are stopped by someone, you mainly lose to them. 2010 was the opposite, he mainly lost to the field.

He got a lung infection in Feb 2010 after visiting Africa which fecked up his training and forced him to withdraw from Dubai. He then lost to LOLBAGHDATIS at Indian Wells and the rest, as they say, is bollocks.

He had some decent runs after 2011. 2012 was a great season, 3 masters and Wimby champion.
Then some resurgence post horrible 2013 season. And of course legendary 2017 Neo Federer season, when he finally figured out Nadal

Most people think Fed did decline though.

People can't accept that life isn't neat and linear. There are ups and downs. Every year is unique, despite our attempts to put boxes around "primes" and "peaks" and label everything.

Fed 04-07 was a monster. 08 AO-W his performance dipped due to health. USO 08 - AO 10 he got most of his level back. Then more health issues. Then a resurgence in late 2011-12. Then more health issues. And so on.

Wow, a Nadal fan with an honest take? Now I've seen everything.

Nadal was better in 2008 when he won 8 tournaments in 4 months, i.e. Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Hamburg, French Open, Queen's Club, Wimbledon, Canadian Open in Toronto, Olympics in Beijing, and became world number 1.

Fred 2008 asterisk because mono.

Novak won his maiden slam title but was still a double fault machine and still raw potential. The field wasn't as strong in 2008 as 2010.

That's why 2010 is a better year for Ralph. The three slams on three surfaces is way more impressive. Nolan was more polished by 2010 and about to take the next step to his 2011 season. Del Po had arrived. Murray also had another slam final under his belt (2010 AO).

I think Ralph also avenged the Soderling loss the previous year that year at Roland Garros.

Federer said that he was over mono by the start of the 2008 clay season, i.e. said it at 2008 Wimbledon in an interview with Sue Barker. He missed a few training blocks in February-March, so may have been slightly less fit than normal.

The 2008 field was certainly stronger than 2010.

Fed had a bunch of minor health problems in 2010, his form was up and down all year. Probably a bit of a dip in motivation after clinching the slam record and winning the AO in 2010. In 2011-2012 you could see he was very motivated to show he was still "Federer ", hence the finger wag. He played peak Djokovic close in the slams although he didn't have an answer for Nadal on the slow courts. He even briefly took number one. From 2013 onwards injuries and a decline in physicality held him back against his biggest rivals - which is natural north of 30.
