Why did Federer's grass game decline so badly after the 2008 final?

Before Roger Federer played the 2008 Wimbledon final he had won his previous 10 grass tournaments in a row.

The next ten tournaments, starting with Wimbledon, saw Federer win only 4 times, losing 6. From Wimbledon 2008 to the present, Federer has won only 9 of the 27 grass court tournaments he has entered.

Why did his form on grass decline so sharply after that day? Was it that the air of invincibility had gone.

It's also called other competition stepped up and rose to the occasion.
Namely, Nadal and Djokovic.

fed only faced nadal once after Wim 08 on grass - Wim 19 SF & beat him.
Fed beat Djoko in Wim 12.
Djokovic wouldn't beat him until Wim 14 final.

Wim 10 - fed lost to berdych
Wim 11 - fed lost to tsonga
Wim 13 - fed lost to stak

So your post is incorrect to put it in kind words.

This is a good question. Especially since Federer had won 10 in a row. He lost to Nadal because of matchup in 2008 but then they didn't play for 11 straight years till 2019. Loses to Berdych Tsonga Djokovic Anderson. But all of them were top 10 at that time I think so they were no scruffs.

2013 is weird and should be ignored.

Once again, Hopeless Bore with a baiting thread.
Fed won Wim 09 after losing Wim 08.

He exited his prime after AO 10. Hence lesser success after that.

I'll correct my post. Here you go:
It's also called other competition stepped up and rose to the occasion.

fed faced tougher competition than berdych, tsonga and stak from 2003-09 at Wimbledon.
fed only faced nadal once after Wim 08 on grass and beat him.
fed beat djoko in Wim 12 and wouldn't lose to him on grass till Wim 14 final when fed was nearly 33.
so instead of accepting you were wrong, you double down?
do you have some decency?

Murray has 5 queens and 1 Olympics on grass outside Wimbledon. Roddick has 4 Queens.

Roddick has 3 finals and Murray has 3 finals at Wimbledon. Roddick has 0 titles.
Consistency and peak is not always the same though. We know Murray is the greater player overall but did he peak higher at Wimby?

Yes. What does their grass elo says ? We can't decide peak by just a match especially in case of Roddick who has 0 titles at Wimbledon.

What does the grass ELO say never looked at it :D

Roddick wasn’t exactly a one match peak player at Wim so it is not based on just one match. Don’t you think facing 2013 Djokovic and 2016 Ranoic could see a peak Roddick being a Wim champ?

NO.

Also, I agreed with another poster above that Fed lost half a step and got older AS WELL AS my post regarding the competition getting better and stepping up.
Namely that competition being NADAL, DJOKOVIC, BERDYCH, TSONGA and STAK.

BOOM! EAT IT!

Wimby 2008 Fed vs Wimby 2015 Djokovic in a final who wins?
Well 3:1 i guess Djokovic wins since he is proven better player on grass when it comes to facing Federer...

My bet is on him but in the world of fantasy everything is possible and i wouldn't count Federer out there .

Djokovic ultra mega lucky with fed becoming older.
DEAL WITH IT!

And get some decency while you are it.

Please stop feeding that loser 12 yo kid or pathetic loser of a troll who hasn't watched tennis before 2011 or possibly 14/15.
I'm putting him on ignore now.
Djokovic fanbase is ultra-loser and toxic on TTW - big chunk of it.

At least you seem okay with Nadal fans

I don’t think you are saying 2015 Fed was the same as 2003-2008 Fed at Wimby and it was just the competition that was different.
2015 Fed was certainly on par or better than those younger version of himself. But he had to deal with one of the highest grass Peaks in modern tennis history, that year. We aren't talking about the bunny Roddick here you know. ;)

Can someone seriously explain the drop off from 08/09 form to getting breadsticked by Berdych in 2010 though? Was Fed hurt or something?

The rest have decently easy explanations if you pay attention (Tsonga literally serving 83% from sets 3-5, back injury in ‘13, Djokovic being really good on grass). That one loss to Berdych is the weird outlier.

because you said competition including berdych/tsonga/stak stepped up. I said fed faced tougher competition than berdych/tsonga/stak in 2003-08 at Wim.
The one who needs to comprehend is you, pal.

I agree that Fed "may" have faced tougher competition in 2003-2008. However, I agreed that Fed had lost half a step AND got older while the competition may have also stepped up (Nadal, Djokovic, Murray etc).

Having this in mind, Federer did remarkably well considering all the factors against him (losing speed, getting older, competition). He won in 2012 and 2017! Made the finals in 2014, 2015 AND 2019 losing only to the tennis GOD Djokovic.
That's actually extremely impressive and that's why Fed is one of the GOATS.

I'm unsure why you're so angry at the TRUTH???

Just DEAL with your emotions a bit better huh? Nobody is trying to troll you bruh.....just spittin' facts homie!

Fed had leg issue in Wim 10.
Wim 13, I think he was fine by himself in that Stak match. Just couldn't get the returns going vs Stak SnVing very well.
