Why did Medvedev retire in Astana?

He told Djokovic he'd pulled an abductor.
This, in interview Djokovic said that Med moved slower in last couple od gems, then during whole match. Also added that Med pulled abductor. I am not sure if this is ttue from Med's side, but whatever

He's a temperamental guy. I could tell he was still pissed messing up the drop volley when he covered his mouth afterwards earlier in the tb. He was gonna tank the 3rd if he played

He tore a abductor muscle in his leg. if he kept on playing on it, he would have torn it even more and would have risked year ending final and also australian open 2023
Thank you. Reading some of the comments above is kind of disrespectful. I’d love to see how they’d handle the injury.

I was pretty surprised like everyone cuz it happened so fast, I didnt think anything was wrong beyonf fatigue. But aside from being a 500 the stakes were pretty high at that point, so i doubt hed retire unless he had to

What did he dominate? Djokovic dictated the play for majority of the match and was the one who mixed up the play. Med could have definitely ended it in 2 but he didn't.
Bc he tore a muscle and wasn’t moving well towards the end of the match. And yet still took Nole deep in the breaker.

Guess Medvdev should’ve pulled a Rafa. Risk the chance of severely injuring himself - maybe win the Match then have no final tomorrow and give Stefanos a walk over.

By the way Medvedev was running to retrieve Djoko's drop shots, I woulda never ever guessed he was hurt.
Pulled muscle can take a bit to feel the real extent of the injury. At first it can seem like nothing special, slight discomfort but then it starts to hurt more and more as you irritate it by continuing to use it. It's best to stop before you make it into a bigger problem.

Yep. I had the Rafa abdominal injury in a league match in the second set of a match after winning the first. I was able to serve ok but didn’t feel much pain. Lost the second and won a 10 point breaker.

the next day I couldn’t even move out of bed.

Thanks for your opinion, but I have to tell you that during my many, many years of playing tennis and other sports, I've been unlucky enough
to pull a muscle quite a few times, everytime that occurred I felt a twinge that let me know I had a problem.

When I had that sharp pain, people around me saw me feeling something, and always had the same question, are you OK?

I didn't see Medvedev having an externalization of a twinge, furthermore he kept running like nothing ever happened.

I don't know if you watched the match, but that's what I saw.

So, when Djoko took the 2nd set I went to the kitchen to fix a Bloody Mary for the decider, then I heard Djoko had won by way of retirement.

Oh well, I missed the 3rd set, but I didn't miss my Bloody Mary.

Probably this. Med was going to lose 6-1 or something in the last set after blowing yet another opportunity vs. Djokodal so he just gave up.

He literally quit lmfao.

The useless next genners have pulled another one out of the bag, when they begin bottling matches they just retire to keep their “pride” of not losing a winnable match.

Shocking stuff from a player who’s already had a shocking year.

Not sure. I doubt he would withdrew just to save face. He and Djokovic are friends, so if he said stop it means there was certainly some physical issue.

I didn't notice anything until the end of the tie-break. The level of tha match was quite sensational, tbh. Really sorry it had to end like this. But it's still a positive week for him. Beating Agut 6-1 6-1 (who'd beaten him 4 times in 5 matchs before this week) who just beat FAA shows he was very good this week. Best level he's played in 2022, without a doubt. Hope he'll be okay for Paris and Turin.

This medvedev was playing at an extremely high level. He’s also not unfit and trains very hard. For those claiming he “quit” - really just dislike him.

Medvdev and Nole have respect for each other. I don’t see Daniil retiring like this.

lmao what's Novak carrying on about... he was famous for pulling this kind of thing off early on in his career...
