Why did mens tennis become so old?

Most players today peak in their early to mid 20s, some even in their lat 20s (melzer). there are only a few below 20 players in the top100. why is that? that used to be so different, we always had top10 players below 20, even some teen slam winners (becker, chang).

where are all those players gone? today kids go to academies from age ten, so if anything they should peak earlier. but still no kid today makes it.

top10 average age:
26.3 years
players in the top20 under 20 yo:
none
players over 30 in the top100:
montanes,llodra,chela,ljubicic,malisse,ferrero,hewitt,stepanek,schüttler, rochus,russel,ramirez hidalgo

so 11 players are over 30, with about 10-15 more being 29(fed, nalby, ferrer, melzer, niemienen, fish....). that means over 20% are 29+ while only 1 is below 20 (dimitrov with harrison and tomic following soon).

what is the reason for this? are the young player to weak today mentally? or are players generally peaking later?

Less younger players playing tennis (I'm 15 and still have a ton to learn). In my area of Sweden we only have 19 people in my age group. That being said, most of the people playing tennis are down south... that's why I focus on playing hockey aswell : )

It sounds like you're living in the Sami region...

No surprise here. Training and nutrition have evolved big time, which allows the men to stay healthy and sustain their "warrior years" for longer than in the past. It also takes some wisdom and know-how to be able to take all comers and remain up near the top of the heap. Consider that Nadal's game has still been evolving in recent years.

The women's game by comparison has become overly power dominant. Young resilient hitters who can out-slug many opponents and move well enough to stay in a few extra points usually hold the upper hand. Much of that hierarchy comes down to who can hit harder for a longer stretch. The Williams sisters have personified this for years.

Reasons, it's a combination of MANY issues. "It's complicated."

Most have absolutely no idea what an undertaking it is to reach a playing/skill level that high?

Like becoming an Astronaut, many dream of it but very few make the grade.

As clearly seen in the life of those that "only play tennis." (Feeling low?)

The local level, the "up and comers?." I've seen parents, especially the fathers, get "in the way," of their child's success and improvement. My guess, everyone has seen this. (That knocks off a bunch? Kerplop.)

Stories about this? I have plenty of them. And in some, not all cases, the child did have the makings to possibly make "some" grade, or at least, see free College.

In my teaching lifetime, I personally had only four students, girls, receive full College scholarships. That alone isn't easy, very difficult!

Only one gifted student did Virginia Slims, and she quit/failed after only one season!
My fault, absolutely not, I got her there! I wanted her to continue to train and wait just one more year. The "parents" and "a newly acquired instructor," who was more concerned with his Resume than the student, gave the parents exactly what they wanted. This detriment was really big! (There goes another. Kerplop.)

Younger less qualified pros. Bingo! That's "thousands" who receive such incorrect advice and training. (A thousand Kerplops.)

Effort, takes more than one would think, as many find out when it's "too late." (Too late, that creeps up really quick. Kerplop.)

"Incorrect training/practicing. "There's great examples of dedicated training, some over a period of years, with absolutely no results. Why is this? Is it "Know it all 'Hotheads.' (Kerplop.)

Read my Posts. I mentioned this "nephew" of a woman I meet, the nephew said, "If they can't beat me, they can't teach me."
(Never meet the kid, but guaranteed, here's another that will beat the dust! Beat the clay! (Double Kerplops.)

That alone should explain some of your question, and the behavior of some/others, on this Forum, should answer others. (Endless Kerplops.)

Hey! Look at me. I've been reduced to a 13 year old Troll.

Blame or reasons! It's everywhere, look around or look in a mirror.

Hey Frank, tell us all about it:

"Next time your found, with your chin on the ground,
There's a lot to be learned, so look around.

Just what makes that little old ant
Think he'll move that rubber tree plant?
Anyone knows an ant can't move a rubber tree plant,

But he's got high hopes, he's got high hopes,
He's got high apple pie, in the sky hopes.

So any time your gettin' low, 'stead of lettin' go,
Just remember that ant -

Oops there goes another rubber tree plant.

When troubles call, and your back's to the wall,
There a lot to be learned, that wall could fall.

Once there was a silly old Ram
Thought he'd punch a hole in a dam;
No one could make that Ram scram - he kept buttin' that dam,

'Cause he had high hopes, he had high hopes,
He had high apple pie, in the sky hopes.

So any time your feelin' bad,'stead of feelin' sad,
Just remember that ram -

Oops there goes a billion kilowatt dam.

All problems just a toy balloon;
They'll be bursted soon - they're just bound to go pop.

Oops there goes another problem ker-
Oops there goes another problem ker-
Oops there goes another problem kerplop, kerplop?"

Say it again Frank!!

Tennis is all about stamina and strength now.
Men reach their peak in regards to the above attributes in their late 20s.

Mental and Physical toughness along with pro match experience.
It is still a big jump from junior or college tennis to top pro tennis.
Many of these guys playing the qualifying matches have to win 2
or 3 matches before the main draw of the tournament starts. It
takes a lot of talent to make it past the 1st or 2nd round if you've
already played 2 or 3 tough matches and you are just trying to
climb up the rankings.

At Delray Beach, Ryan Sweeting (91) won 3 qualifying matches to
get into the main draw. He played every day until he was knocked
out in the quarterfinals. To me it just seems the field of top players
is large and to reach the level were you will move inside the top 25
you have to pay your dues. Like Ryan it seems that there are almost
no players making huge jumps in the ranking during the year which
I would interpret as an indication of the quality of Men's tennis that
is played today.

Tennis today is much different than when chang and becker played. The strings produce much more spin, and it's a faster game. You need a few years to adapt and a lot of the pros say the one thing that separates qualifiers from pros is the experience and maturity and knowing when to go for shots and when to be patient. When you're young you approach the game differently, you pull the trigger more and go for broke more. The older guys play a more consistent game and they have much more success. If you watch nadal when he was young he tried to play more for winners than moving his opponent around and constructing points. Guys today are so good that you need a better game plan than just beating the ball around and hoping somebody makes an unforced error and I think that's what the young guys learn and take away as they mature and become more seasoned pros.

The top 10 is a relatively small sample size to represent the men's tour, but the phenomena is not as unusual as it seems. There have been periods before (1988, 1999) where the average top 10 age has peaked around 26.

The graph seems to exhibit a cyclic nature, showing that perhaps the age of the men's tour is a generational thing. We could very well see the figure drop down in 5-10 years or so.
