Something to do with Ferrero's coach 'coaching' the Spaniard during the match:

I already posted about this. I can attest Ferrero's coach doing that:

I saw Ferrero two years ago, at TMS Montreal, losing to Kucera (a very crafty player), in two sets.

Canada TMS, Hard, R16
3 6 5 7

I was in the baseline seats, in the first row, one meter from his coach. He was talking all the time to the coach (and his posse was talking back to him) moaning and complaining like a kindergarten kid.

Nope wasn't about the Coach..It was about the line call That ferrero made..Safin thought it was in.. when the lines person called it out an safin didn't hear it thats why the Argument..(You guy's know Your Tennis).

Well said Frodo. A line call at 2-0 unsettled Safin soo he started argueing with the umpire. JCF then complains to the umpire for time wasting, and tells safin to get on with the match.

HAMBURG, Germany, May 11 (Reuters) - A furious Marat Safin accused Juan Carlos Ferrero of acting like a 14-year-old after losing 4-6 6-4 6-2 to the Spaniard in the second round of the Hamburg Masters on Wednesday.

The Russian third seed had a long argument with the chair umpire at 2-0 down in the second set after an overrule and was infuriated when an impatient Ferrero asked the official to order Safin to resume playing.

"I don't understand what Ferrero was complaining about," said Safin, whose rivalry with the Spaniard dates back to their time as juniors. "I grew up with the guy basically, we've known each other for 11 years and the guy is doing this to me.

"I don't think it was really polite from his part. You have to act like a gentleman. I'm not trying to cheat anybody, I'm just asking (about the call), I'm just trying to prove my point.

"But don't give me this attitude, like a kid who is 14 years old."

The Australian Open champion, who also lost to Ferrero at the Monte Carlo Masters last month, added: "He should realise himself, he's 25 years old, a little bit grown up, he's played a lot of tournaments and we've known each other 11 years.

"I don't need to cheat anybody. I'm trying to win the match. It really pissed me off."

Ferrero, who is beginning to rediscover the form that brought him the French Open title in 2003, said he hoped their friendship would not be damaged by the incident.

"Sometimes Marat gets a little bit nervous and then he does something like this," he said. "I tried to stay calm and focus on the next point.

"The umpire can't spend three minutes talking with a player, he had to stop it. Three minutes is too much.

"But Marat is like this sometimes. I know him and am very friendly with him. I hope this doesn't mean too much in the relationship."

He also rejected Safin's claim that he had been talking to his coach constantly during the match.

"My coach talked to me one or two times in the whole match, exactly the same as his coach," said Ferrero, whose win set up a last 16 clash with another Russian, Nikolay Davydenko.

"I'm feeling really good physically. I feel I can beat anybody," said the Spaniard, who has slipped to number 39 in the rankings after a succession of fitness problems.

If it really was about a line call, then I think that there is no discussion; there are many instances in which pro argues a call. If it was about Ferrero being coached during the match, then the argument was indeed needed...that is a serious offense :(

A:"... Then the second thing was that Ferrero said something, the linesman said something that I didn’t hear. So, I started to argue, asking normal questions. Ferrero’s coach was coaching every second ball and I didn’t say anything to the chair umpire. Once when I am discussing the point which is normal because it was a break point and really important to me, he come to the chair umpire – he didn’t even come to me, but the chair umpire has to tell me that I have to play. I mean what kind of person is that. I grew up with the guy basically. We know each other for eleven years. And the guy is doing this to me. I don’t think it’s really polite from his part. Of course he will tell you his part of the story. But I don’t think, with all the respect to him, you have to act like a gentleman. I have the right to discuss. It’s not like I’m complaining about every single point like some other players. I’ve been fair to everybody since I am on the tour. So for once that I have a discussion with the chair umpire, I think I’m allowed to do that. Especially because I think that I’m right. I’m not trying to cheat anybody. I’m just asking and trying to prove my point. That’s it."

A:"... Even we didn’t discuss the marks because I trust him and always trusted him. So I didn’t need to call the chair umpire to go and check his marks. Never. I would never do it. If he came and said this is the story. Fair enough, we continue playing. But not give me this attitude like kids of 14 years. He said this, he did that … I was quiet when he was getting the coaching. I didn’t go to the umpire."

You know, Safin has a valid point. It's pretty rich of Ferrero to complain to the umpire about Safin querying something, especially when Ferrero's been receiving coaching from his coach and Safin never even mentioned it to the umpire.

I was watching the match live. And not only Safin, but even me didn't understand and didn't hear what Ferrero said and what the linesman said. I also didn't understand the excuse gesture of Ferrero at that "out".

Anyhow even if to suppose that Safin is right the tone of his negotiation with the umpire and the fact that he went upstairs and tryed to press a little the umpire were not good at all.

I didn't like both in such a case.

Safin is that kind of player. He always bring 'drama' to the court. The other player needs to maintain his cool and play his match and the majority of the time Safin will self destruct.

From his interview. He did NOT say Ferrero acted like a 14 year old.

Q: What was your conversation with the umpire?

A: Because I served, nobody called anything and I played the point and won it. Suddenly he went down, checked the mark and said this ball is out and I have to replay the point. I asked him why, I finished it already. It doesn’t matter. You can’t overrule because the point is finished. So for once that I have a discussion with the chair umpire, I think I’m allowed to do that. Especially because I think that I’m right. I’m not trying to cheat anybody. I’m just asking and trying to prove my point. That’s it.

Q: What was Ferrero saying?

A: Well, he just came to the chair umpire. He didn’t even say excuse me. He was just hitting the tower, the umpire looked down. He just said “make him shut up and play”.

Q: What did the umpire say?

A: Of course, the guy doesn’t know what to do. But first of all if you are polite and a normal person, you respect the players and you respect me, you say “Marat listen, sorry I said this and this. The ball is like this or like that”. No problem. I don’t have a problem with anybody. I didn’t go to the umpire.

Q: So what did you say to Ferrero after the match?

A: It’s okay because otherwise it wouldn’t feel right, because I lost the match and I’m complaining to him. It’s not the proper moment. He should realise himself. He’s 25 years old, a little bit grown up, he made a lot of tournaments and we’ve known each other for 11 years. I don’t need to cheat anybody. I’m trying to win the match. I’m trying to play nice. And everybody is happy. But no, the coach told Ferrero to tell the umpire that I need to shut up and play.

Q: You heard that?

A: Yes, it was like this. Then after the match my coach came to me and said that the coach of Ferrero was going to the supervisor telling him that I should play, so that he puts pressure on me because I am slowing down the match. Come on: who is trying to stop the match? It’s really ******* me of. I complained yes.

well... ferrero did go overboard with it. its not his job to stop the argument. u cant just step in between a player and the umpire and call off the argument.

good for ferrero, maybe now someone outside of spain will care about him :)

Some of you guys make the worst comments about Ferrero, Coria, Safin I don't get it. These guys are the top players in the game. You don't think people care about Ferrero? Your wrong, a lot of people do and respect him throughout the world. Just because he doesn't get a few Wild Cards doesn't mean he isn't respected or cared for.

Also, this is just a petty argument, probably between two competitive friends, I don't think it will amount to that much.

Safin called ferrero a 14 yr old boy. That is funny. Ferrero seems to have safins number on clay. I hope Marat peaks for the FO, anything is possible with this guy.

What Safin did was a disgrace, if i was the umpire and he did that to me i would have defaulted him, what a goose! Like, Ferrero said, I would have told him to get on with it too, it's just time wasting, and we are taught to accept the umpire's decision and move on. To actually climb up the chair was totally unacceptable, imagine, young kids will see that and start copying them. A disgraceful performance.

And my question is...if Marat's rant was so far out of line & time consuming, why didn't the umpire put a stop to it??? Right there and then. As we know, given a person to listen to him, Marat will expound, and he was allowed to....at length..by the umpire. With no warning, only an admoninition about his language. Marat's complaint is legitimate in my view, & he was visibly upset by having been what he viewed as being betrayed by a friend, and Ferrero's Mr. Nice Guy comments in his interview are after the fact and would have been better if he had shut his own mouth on the court...or had the guts to look at Marat and say "shut up" to him instead of asking the umpire to do it for him. And Safin did not climb the tower (umpire's chair) Ferrero was banging on it.

The only thing that was disgraceful was Ferrero receiving coaching during the match. His coach should really stay out of it during a match.

Safin did climb the chair, and the umpire told him not to. And by the way, they all get coached from the sidelines, not just ferrero. Players think they are above it all now. Too much money, not enough good sportsmanship i'm afraid! Except a select few eg. Federer

Safin was complaining about Ferrero being coached during the match? It's not so overt with him and Lundgren, but I was sitting a few rows behind Peter for the game against Nico Almagro in Rome, and he certainly seemed to be giving his charge hand signals during the match. Not that it helped much.

From what I saw Safin climbed the chair becuase umpire said he couldn't hear him (it was noisy as fans were booing Safin). What I don;t understand why Safin started compaining after they replayed the point and he lost it?
