why do men tennis players wear crew socks up to their calves?

i wear crew socks up to my calves because it gives my legs warmth i guess.

i like the look of it also

and because i think its cause thats how the old professionals wore their socks.

and idk to make womens legs look better

Yeah, the ladies wanna show off those sexy calves lol!
And I wear crews cause I feel they keep my feet dry, they dont allow sweat to run down my legs into my shoes.

Just the way it looks. I used to think low-cut socks were cool, but I don't like the way Mardy Fish looks in them. They just look better on women than on men.

ahh i understand the support, my calves dont move as much and i feel faster. can you explain circulation though? im not quite getting that :P

I am short so I don't have a lot of leg to begin with. Can't cover up what I do have.

I think Mardy Fish should wear higher socks. He looks like raided his wife's sock drawer or something.

If I knew the women were checking me out I might dress better.

Actually I wear short ankle socks that finish about 2 inches above my tennis shoes.

But because of this thread... I guess I should check for panty lines before I go out and play tonight, you never know who might be checking you out.

And here I thought only men did that kind of thing.

i do it cause if i wear any other style of socks i end up getting blisters.
and i just think that the socks look cooler ;)

I notice what the guys are wearing, but only up to a point. I like to look at guys' shoes, and I think bandanas on guys look really cool. As for the attire itself, I tend not to notice unless it is highly unusual.

And as I have said many times, guys should dress in black from head to toe whenever possible. That is Dead Sexy.

I've got pretty big developed calves (i go to the gym often), but rather narrow ankles, so ankle socks on me look a little weird.

I used to wear low-cut ankle socks until I saw Mardy Fish. He looks ridiculous with his no-shows. I'm not a big fan of Fish to begin with. Now I usually wear crew socks; sometimes I wear some shorter ones but nothing that goes below the tongue of the shoe.

Honestly I always check out the guys and what they're wearing. A guy who has style on the court and has the skills makes him only more attractive.

LOL i had to laugh at your all-black comment! I don't really like a guy in all black- i hated it when Federer wore all black. But his new AO blue outfit.... oh man

Hmmm... I occasionally wear a black adidas collared shirt with a black adidas shorts... but it stops there... does that count?

No bandanas for me... and I like a classic look in my shoes... nothing too flashy.

The extra sock is pushing down the veins, making the blood move faster. I would wear crews, but they make my legs itch like crazy when I wear them. Business socks are even worse for me.

I wear the crew socks indoors and for matches/tournaments. If I'm training or just screwing around I'll wear low socks so the sock tan isn't that bad

I think that a higher sock looks more masculine as it makes the leg under the calf appear a little wider and stronger.

Low/no show are typically very feminine. The socks accentuate legs and the eye naturally follows the line of the leg until it tapers into the footwear.

I wear two pair of socks to widen my legs a little. A higher sock just feels right for tennis, not so much for basketball. At 6.3" with long, thin legs and size 13 feet, looking like a torso balancing on two golf clubs isn't the way to strike fear into the heart of your opponent either. ;)

I do the crew socks with the tops folded down, the way Newk and some of the other old guys used to wear them. I don't feel comfortable with the socks up on my calves, and there's no way I'm going to wear those silly little no-show socks. Have you seen Agassi wearing those lately? Ridiculous.

I started wearing the crew socks recently and the best thing is that they dont slide down off my foot like no show or low cut socks do but I wear no show socks off the court

Is the LawMan back? Haven't heard a peep from you in 6 months! Still playing tennis? I guess not in winter. Good to hear from you!!!
I play most of my tennis in sub 60 degree weather. I wear shorts for movement, so mid length socks for warmth.
Like the LawLaw man, I'm really skinny for my height, and low socks makes me look like I have model girl legs...with hair and more muscle.

Wow, I may have to start wearing those longer socks to play tennis. All about the look. Hopefully, it'll make me tiny legs look bigger. They look pretty sweet though now since you bring it up

It looks badass? Hah i dunno. It just has a wierd feel and look when you wear ankle socks. And if your worried about a tan. sunblock and push your socks down when your not playing a set or when your just hitting

It's a tradition left over from when there was one kind of men's white socks that were worn for everything to do with sports, from running to basketball practice to tennis.

A shorter sock shows off more of your legs.
Do you want to show off more of your legs?

I didn't think so.

It's weird how it only applies to sports.

If I'm wearing casual shorts, I usually wear ankle socks with sneakers but I don't like the way they look with tennis apparel.

socks + bethanie mattek = HOT

Bethanie Mattek is not H O T. She is P I G.

and what's up with Mattek wearing Mizuno running shoes to play tennis??

Watching the Fed Cup right now and she has on Mizuno running shoes on red clay?? What What??!!
