Why do people continually predict that this will be the year that the Big 3 stop winning slams?

It's been happening since like 2012. Every single year, people predict that this will be the year the Big 3 don't win a slam, or that the Next Gen will break through etc. It's not happening any time soon. Djokovic and Nadal looked as good as ever at the ATP cup, with Djokovic obviously the better one. We haven't seen Federer yet but I doubt he's had some massive decline and we're sure to see him reach the latter stages of the AO, bar some freak one-off inspired performance from a Next Gen player.

We do see shocks at the USO and WTF, but that's because it's hard to keep up a consistently high level of play at 30+ years old for the whole season. But Next Gen haven't even come close to winning the AO, FO or Wimbledon. Until they do that, I can't see 2020 as the year when the Next Gen start winning slams on a consistent basis.

Because it has to happen eventually. It’s going to be comical when they’re in their 40s winning slams, while Zverev has to play futures qualifiers (that’s how far he’ll far). Quite a ways, going from luxurious hotels and private jets to Motel 6 and ****-stained airline seats with... *gasp* normal human beings!

I predict the opposite. This will be 2019 all over again. 2021 will be the first chance for the changing of the guard, but likely 2022.

Even if Medvedev were to win the AO, its not going to be a new era. Nadal and Djokovic are still not losing at RG / Wimbledon this year.

I agree with you. Nadal/Djokovic/Fed are favorite at F.O/Wimb/UsOpen.
And also, I don't think Medvedev is going to win the AO. Too much hype, not enough substance IMO.

There is no way to predict future events. It's hopeless to try. However, the only way they will cease to be relevant is when the younger players can beat them regularly. Some are getting close. Tsitsipas, Medvedev, Thiem and a few others have wins against them, but not in Slams for some reason. When someone outside "the 3" wins a Slam it will signal the beginning of the end.
