Murray's persona in front of the camera is dour and introverted, his playing style under pressure can be ultra defensive though I wouldn't say he's a pusher like Brad Gilbert for instance who had zero weapons, Murray can finish rallies off, Djokovic has the best backhand in the game and Murray is a close second.

Is he that bad? I just don't understand, or do people just love to hate him? So many hater threads regarding him and it's just childish insults...so I try to defend as I see other than his lack of media personality anything to attack and I usually get po'd about it because people like to bring Britain's colonial past and the old bad teeth jokes into the arguments.

Yes I'm half Anglo by the way and I have medium standard teeth, my ancestors on my Anglo side used to work in the workhouses for a matter of fact than sailing the seven seas for a country to inhabit.

What has Britain's colonial past got to do with Andy Murray?

The same goes with Bartoli but people hate her because of her appearance than her style, with the discriminatory "fat" jibes.

What is the average age and IQ for people on this site?

He has the most underrated personality due to his shyness. I don't hate him. It is just that I support Novak more so sometimes it is perceived as hate.

I think he has a horrible personality on a tennis court (I don't care that much how he is off of it, but he is improving in that department anyway), I find his game to be snore inducingly dull, I find his in game attitude to be frankly cowardly far too often, and though it has nothing to do with anything, I can stand neither his mother, nor the way the media in this country treats and talks about him.

That said, I really do think he has improved a lot in the last 12 months, and dislike him a lot less than I used to.

They will post all kinds of rationalizations about his "pusher game" and "bland personality" even though those are characteristics of numerous players on tour towards whom they do not show detestation. However, if you were to secure a glimpse into their subconscious you would find mainly one reason:

11-9.

It doesn't help when Wimby comes around. All the Brits basically drool over him which really puts a lot of people off him.

Djoker was probably as hated as Murray initially, but forced people to respect him with his play. Murray can do the same by winning Sunday.

Wish people could see the BBC documentary about him, really shows more of his personality.

I thinks its just his on court attitude, Nadal is fighter, people love him, Federer is graceful, people love him. Djokovic is funny with impressions and stuff so people like him, they dont understand him cursing and shouting in serbian so they are not bothered.

They see Murray get angry at himself and curse and they pick up on that and choose not to like him over that.

Clever tennis player but unfortunately a boring style of game. His on court behaviour prior to working with Lendl (who played tennis in a more manly era, no soft c##k# back then) has improved. People haven't forgotten his old on court behaviour. Off the court seems a whole lot more gracious and genuine than Saint Roger. No reason to hate him.

He's not a boring player at all. You can see him thinking his way to victory on the court - he's a guy with variety and will use that to expose any weakness once he's honed in on it.

So much more interesting to watch than all those 6ft 6in+ guys who just brainlessly wail away on every ball.

Maybe the average tennis fan in here is way too ADD to appreciate a point being constructed anyway - they wanna see lines painted as quickly as possible. In which case Isner is your new God.

It's the British crowd and media
They are sooooo annoyingly irritating

I don't hate him that much outside of Wimby though
it's just that his on-court behavior in front of Brits and Scots is simply awful

What a joke. Joker has robbed Fed of much more than Murray has.

I dislike Murray because he's an overrated, overachieving pusher (yes, he is) and a choker with an annoying on court demeanour. And it doesn't help that he looks like a rat.

Why? Because he's not very likable. Is really that difficult to understand? His on-court demeanor is nauseating, and frankly, I don't care how he conducts himself off of the court, because I don't watch Andy Murray sitting at the bar with his friends. I watch him play tennis, and that's all I care about.

people here don't just hate Murray. They hate Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Serena, Sharapova, Azarenka, etc...

I have grown to like murray. It is unfortunate that so many brits hype him up. When he falls short, people attack him like it is his fault there is all this hype when he really is not a trash talker at all.

How is he a top guy if he chickens out of FO and practices in grass the same week ?

Compare that with the tenacity of Novak or the fighting spirit of Rafa winning 7 titles on his comeback or Federer's gracefulness even under intense pressure.

Neither does he have the brashness of Berdych or the flamboyance of Tsonga or the elegance of Gasquet or the power of Delpo.

Murray is more like Ferrer in terms of tennis appeal.

That being said, give Murray a 2-3 slam year and most of these "haters" will quickly hop on the bandwagon. They are easy riders who latch on to a player once he becomes the best. They are not the kind of people who would stand by a player thick or thin, or support said player while he struggles to emerge; they measure character by number of victories and deride as weak and lazy a player that is not a success. Gloryhunters through and through. How easy it is to glorify a champion after the fact.

Look back on Djokovic-related threads from 2009 through 2010 and see the extent to which he was derided for his personality, for being a choker, mentally weak, etc. Then 2011 came and he began crushing Nadal, and he was proclaimed a hero, champion, mentally strong, etc.

There is no objective fact about Murray or Djokovic (at the time) that garnered enmity, just excuses people created to hurl invective at those they perceive as weak. Sort of like the Roman audiences cheering on a lion mauling a slave in the coliseum. When that slave happens upon a spear and impales the lion, the same crowd that was hitherto enthusing the slave's death now showers him with applause and praise.

He didn't chicken out of FO. He had a back injury. A back injury, in particular, is not an injury you want to risk making worse. Common sense, man. And by pointing out how he began practicing on grass, you're comparing the amount of work it takes to compete in a major to the amount required to casually hit balls with a hitting partner. Nadal missed the US Open last year because of an injury, and yet you praise him.

And no, he doesn't have all the qualities of those players you listed. That would be boring if top players shared ALL the same characteristics. Murray has ferocity-- he'll fight through rallies and he'll vent his anger at himself after missed shots. He has a lot of small tantrums, so he is by no means a graceful player; instead, he is gritty (like Ferrer) yet highly combustible. He'll be shouting in rage one moment, then the next game he'll be quiet, focused, and finding his game. I completely understand why some people don't like him, but the reasons you listed make zero sense.

Overrated? Where? Overachieving? Is, what is it, 6 slam finals plus a win and an Olympics not enough to become simply a great player?

I don´t hate Murray, but I don´t like anything from him,,,,sorry his racquet is very nice PT 57 A 16x19,,,,,,that is.......

1 out of 6 gets one 'great'? Really? That's some good stuff you're on.

Poor showing, WCA. Can you name me, off the top of your head, the number of players who have won a major? Then, please, name me the number of players who have been to 6 finals. I think that rather short list, relative to the number of world tennis players, will show you that Andy Murray is, indeed, pretty great.

His style of play is horrific. When you watch a sport long enough to see it eventually dominated by one dimensional pushing, you just can't figure out how it's come to this. When a player can make it into the top five as a gutless whiner, never taking chances, never trying to hit winners, always waiting for his opponent to f*** up, that's when you know it's a different sport entirely. As a person, maybe he's ok, but as a professional tennis player, most people can't stand the guy. I'm sure many here will rush to his defense but take a look at all the threads that abhor the guy in some way or another. Plenty of haters of other players so I guess just deal.

Andy isn't my favorite, but I like him more and more as time goes on. The constant berating of himself on court gets annoying but mostly I just get a good laugh from it now, and it doesn't take away from my enjoyment of the match.

Because he is irritating to watch; he may be a great person off the courts, but he really has to learn how to conduct himself properly during matches, :(

I like Murray, but I'm not gonna defend the guy. He loses his cool a lot, despite Llendl's coaching, and his play-style, especially his forehand, is uneasy on the eye (except at the AO semi against Djoker in 2012, he hit some awesome forehands). But, if you can appreciate his ability to fight through his anger and laugh at his self-inflicted rage, you'll like him more as a player.

Do you honestly deny that he's a pusher ? People aren't saying this for no reason. I dont like or dislike Murray, but I rarely watch his matches unless hes playing an interesting opponent, because I know I'd rather watch paint dry..

I think the main reason he is hated is because of his style. Take a typical ball bashing brute like Tsonga who is pretty well liked. Murray put's him to the sword most of the time they come against each other, often forcing Tsonga into errors with his beautiful all action style, which most people obviously love.

At times it's almost as if he's mocking his opponents with his lack of aggresion, which obviously most failed players on here that lost to guys like him would despise.

The fact that he's got a winning head to head against Roger Federer, the most adored man in tennis history isn't going to do him any favours either.
The rest of the reasons people mention, like him being ugly for instance are just secondry reasons to the main reason, which is his style.

He's Scottish, he'll never be British or English.. There's a huge difference and deep down he's just like William Wallance.. I'm sure he'd spit on the Queen just like everyone else not from England.

He is primarily a defensive player, but then again so is Nadal and usually Djokovic, too.

However, this "pusher" has the biggest first serve of the top four by a significant margin, and also has hit one of the fastest forehands measured, at 124 MPH.

The fact that he wins points with his amazing speed and coordination/anticipation is enough to make him a "pusher", I guess. You'd think someone with a Nadal avatar would be a little more reticent to throw around the "pusher" label, but alas.

He reminds me of my autistic classmate from elementary school who also had overprotective mother and acted like total dork.

Oh, 11-9 is the reason? Or could it be that 3-0 that allowed Federer to become the greatest grand slam winner in tennis history. He couldn't have done it without Murray.

Its programmed into the British cultural DNA. Historically its been of heavenly importance for them to guide the Scots & Irish. The Scots and Irish can thank the British for bringing their primitive cultures to the modern era. The British empire may not have achieved its divine Sanctity and holy destiny it did if they had meddlesome nations of intellectually less evolved barbarians to the north in similar strength to France, Germany or Spain to compete with in the age of imperialism and expansionism centuries ago.

Murray has been a top 4 player for years now. That's evidence of a weak era, not proof of a strong one like so many would lead us to believe.

People hate on Murray, people hate on Fed, people hate on Nadal, people hate on Djoko... Take your pick. I like Fed's "don't give a damn about what just happened" personality, I like Nadal's "I'm coming after you" personality, I like Djoko's "I'll one-up you everytime I can" personality, and I like Murray's shy but sometimes overwhelmed personality.

People forget Federer and Nadal were both brats in juniors and as up-and-comers in the Pros. Djoko was always Djoko, and Murray was always in Nadal's and Djoko's shade ever since juniors or early Pros.

Just my 2 cents

but then the people who watch Murray on Henman Hill loves and supports him. That's more important for Murray than those who dislike him on an internet forum.

The vast majority of the country supports him, no doubt, which is why the Murray fans on this forum shouldn't bother responding to the anti-Scottish sentiment.

I don't like Murray because I know the English language media hype him up BECAUSE they desperately want him to be part of the European trio of Federer, Nadal, Djokovic.

The American and the British media are desperate to have an Anglo Saxon man included in the top tier group.

Murray is also arrogant he's ugly and he has a bad attitude.

Murray is scottish. Not exactly anglo saxon.
