Why do people think Federer will win another Major?

Not every major is roland garros. He has a really good shot at wimby and USO. I don't see another aussie and no way roland garros.

Federer at his best would not have played like he did today. Another reason why it's very obvious you have only recently started watching tennis.

If it weren't for joker and Nadal then Fed would be #1 and this woul be his 30th slam win.

You would be silent.....well not silent but saying he is just not human.

The truth is since 2007 Nadal has been in his way since 2007 and even if he had beaten Joker ( which he did just last year) he still would have lost to Nadal ....prime or no prime..,...it's still all the same.......

Nadal is 12-2 against Fed on clay. Fed never ever stood a chance and the only one who does is Joker.

That's the truth . Now the real question is are you able to deal with it?

When I did a poll after 2010 wimbledon asking if fed would win another 120 people voted yes, only 18 voted no. If someone did a poll now wonder what the result would be.

He has already got a gold doubles medal, partnering stan in china 2008.

Yes, I know. But we all know he wants that singles gold. That's what constitutes the career golden grand slam. A doubles Wimbledon title doesn't count towards a career slam, why would a doubles gold medal count. He's even talked about playing in Rio 2016. It's clear he has unfinished business at the Olympics.

Clearly you just started watching tennis. And that is your opinion, not a fact.

That a 30 year old Federer would be No. 1 today shows what a weak era we are currently in.

Because *******s cant face that possibility. Note that I said said possibility, not fact. Its still possible for Fed to win. As long as he still plays, hes got a chance. Sometimes, a chance is all you need.

I imagine jm1980 that if you in a movie, youd be that guy that always says you cant do it and the odds are against you e.g. C-3P0 lol.

Exactly. It's a possible future, but as of right now, it's not reality. Federer is always right there, ready to strike if one of the two ranked above him falters.

If you do it now it will be slightly less. If a few days before Wimbledon then the same.

TT will always be behind Federer.

I can wait to bump this thread when Federer wins another slam.

...you mean "if."

There's not a boatload of players in his age bracket who won majors. In fact, the list is quite small...

The following is historical fact: the very short list of men in the Open Era to win majors at or past the age 30:

Rod Laver won his 2nd Grand Slam in 1969 at the age of 30 (Federer never found himself in the talent pool to do that, even in his prime).

Ken Rosewall won the '72 Australian Open at the age of 37 (highly unlikely Federer will be playing at that age).

Gimeno won the '72 French Open at the age of 34 (unlikely Federer will be playing at that age).

Ashe won the '75 Wimbledon singles title at the age of 32.

Connors won the '83 U.S. Open at the age of 31.

Gomez won the '90 French Open at the age of 30.

Sampras won the '02 U.S. Open at the age of 31.

Agassi won the '03 Australian Open at the age of 32.

Not a mountain of support for the various victories to be repeated again and again by a player seemingly on the downslide, being so rare in over 4 decades of Open tennis.

It is beyond question that Federer will not continue playing to reach Rosewall's 37yrs, win the Grand Slam at 30 like Laver (AO and FO 2012 just snuffed that out), or win a FO at age 34 like Gimeno.

Time is running out for Federer with each passing month. He would be lucky--in the extreme--to win another major (and require a dream draw and/or on-court brainfarts/meltdowns from his chief rivals).

People are talking about his Masters /ATP1000/500 tournament records in this context, which is totally absurd.

To win a GS tournament, you need to win atleast 21 sets of tennis match.

For a Masters tournament, it is at most 21. (assuming you need to play 7 rounds).. That in itself is a huge difference. The sheer physical and mental effort may now be beyond Federer.

So it doesnt matter if he defeats Nadal 7-5, 7-6 in Cincy or Djoker 7-5, -7,6 in Toronto..or a Murray 6-4, 6-4 in Halle.

The majors are quite simply beyond him now.

There's this thread asking people to predict the next slam winners and there're still people picking Federer to win majors. Really?

In the last 9 slams he never came close to winning any of them:

2010 French Open: QF, lost to Soderling (6-3 3-6 5-7 4-6)
2010 Wimbledon: QF, lost to Berdych (4-6 6-3 1-6 4-6)
2010 US Open: SF, lost to Djokovic (7-5 1-6 7-5 2-6 5-7)
2011 Australian Open: SF, lost to Djokovic (6-7 5-7 4-6)
2011 French Open: F, lost to Nadal (5-7 6-7 7-5 1-6)
2011 Wimbledon: QF, lost to Tsonga (6-3 7-6 4-6 4-6 4-6)
2011 US Open: SF, lost to Djokovic (7-6 6-4 3-6 2-6 5-7)
2012 Australian Open: SF, lost to Nadal (7-6 2-6 6-7 4-6)
2012 French Open: SF, lost to Djokovic (4-6 5-7 3-6)

Realistically, he'll never win the French as long as Nadal plays. With Djokovic at #1 and Nadal at #2, he can't even hope Djoker takes out Nadal. Not going to happen. People say he'll win Wimby, but failed to reach the semis in the last two. And with Djokovic 2.0 and an improved Murray, I don't see him winning the AO or USO.

The man is getting old, that's a fact. And last year he lost twice in majors after winning the first two sets (Wimbledon and USO), something that's never happened before.
How on Earth is going to win another major?

These numbers alone don't tell the whole story. Basically he had Djokovic beaten last year at the US Open (and the year before that). Djesus escaped from both of those encounters with miracles.

As for the FO final last year, you may recall how he was a half inch or so from winning the first set 6-2. His drop shot fell just inches wide. Had that hit the line he would have won the first set and with the way he was on fire last year might have toppled Rafa at the French.

He's got a shot, but he'll need to put in strong performances in the next 6 GS events. And who knows, maybe Djoker or Rafa will get hurt, leaving a power vacuum like in 2009.

Federer leads Djokovic 5-4 in Majors, with most of his wins coming against baby Djokovic. That doesn't make Djoker his lapdog by any stretch of the imagination.

2007 AO 4R: Federer
2007 USO F: Federer
2008 AO SF: Djokovic
2008 USO SF: Federer
2009 USO SF: Federer
2010 USO SF: Djokovic
2011 AO SF: Djokovic
2011 RG SF: Federer
2011 USO SF: Djokovic

Also Djokovic won 3 of their last 4 matches in majors. The one-off loss wasn't Federer's USO loss, but Djoker's loss in RG.

It's funny how people act like Federer dominated Djoker last year. He actually went 4-1 against Fed, with two wins in majors to boot.

We'll see :)

So peak Fed beat baby Djoker most of the time and peak Djoko beat grandpa Fed most of the time. It makes perfect sense to me.

I think Federer still got the chance to win another major, at least until next years US Open when he will be 32. Considering Sampras was 31 when he won his last and Agassi was 32 and Federer is a great champion, still making it far into the slams he can do it without a doubt.

Eh, I hope he at least gets one more WB.

You never know. Especially considering that Nadal and Djoker take a pound of flesh from one another after each slam final they meet and the turnaround for Wimby is so quick...who knows what they would have left in the tank for Wimby?

Yeah, like everyone in the draw, it only takes a couple of off days for major players to be goner. It happened to Federer here - he played like a mug, possibly the worst average play over 5 matches he's played in a slam in almost a decade. But, we know he can play great tennis still - he's shown it plenty of times in the last 9 months - even against the biggest guns. 3 or 5 set, I don't think it really matters all that much to be honest. It's the day to day form of players relative to each other than matters more. Federer was just in a lull, his first on any note since Sept last year basically. And, as others have pointed out, he did it in conditions that probably couldn't have been conjured up as being less favourable to him even if that was the specific intention.

Give him a truer bounce, faster court and balls and suddenly a lot of those margins swing back in his favour a whole heap if he's playing remotely inspired tennis.

Just another final like AO12 tomorrow and He will have his chances.

basically....I know it hurt like hell, but he was right to tank. no point taking another beating from nadal and wasting energy...let them grind each other to pulp and wreck their bodies before WB.

How crazy would it be if Fed and Rafa both got 7 titles at their fave slams in the same year?

They will recover, and are physically stronger than the aging Federer, so it does not matter how the FO final goes down. Federer has his won problems not even connected to Djokovic or Nadal. Do you recall how he was booted out of Wimbledon last year? Or the year before?

Some former players won slams into their thirties when they were past their prime when they were helped by draws opening up for them. Eg. Sampras was really lucky to get his last USO after winning zilch for two years (not even a 250 title). For some reason I don't see that happening with Fed.

Fed almost always ends up getting the toughest draw among the top 4 usually with a dangerous player lurking in his quarter and if he manages to get to the semis , Novak and Nadal are too consistent making the final stages of every slam. Like some people here said, his best chance was to make it to #2 so he avoids one of Nadal/Nole.

If Federer needs to win a major, he will need the following :-

Of course someone to take care of Nadal and Djokovic. That is the biggest need of the hour.

Then Murray (when he is fit).

Then Tsonga, Berdych, Del Potro (when he is fit).

If these six players lose, Federer might win a slam event.

I agree. With Djoker and Rafa as #1 and 2. It is very hard to sail pass the 2 and win it all.

Just like pre-2009 USO NOBODY could beat both Fed and Rafa in the same slam.

Federer has never lost to Murray in a slam and once each to the rest of the above mentioned players which is more of an aberration. He hasn't met Berdych again at a slam but has handily beaten Delpo and Tsonga multiple times after that. So to say all these players are required to lose for him to win a slam is as absurd as saying Djokovic needs Melzer to lose and Nadal needs Tsonga to lose for them to win a slam. lol.

It because of Federer giving himself chance like right now, that make people believe he will win another major!

man o man in this era to come back at the age of 30 and beat two of the best players in the top 3 to win your 17 really says it all about the man. As well as regularly reaching semis and quarters of all the slams. the man is a legend. TO beat players 5 years younger than you in tennis is just unbelievable.

This thread has the potential to touch the epic status of "Cincy is the real slam".

Now, I've got more bad news for you, OP (once you've finished drowning your sorrows, of course): something tells me he still isn't done. Which probably means more bumpings of this thread and more fame for you. Great, isn't it?

The Cincy people have a sense of humor. In this case the OP is just a child with an internet connection. He/she probably watches Nadal and thinks he plays the game the same as Roger. Sad, really.

FAILED BIG TIME

The most satisfying aspect of Federer's triumph is the way in which it has silenced the trolls. Not too many of them are posting today, and those who are have been forced to make absurd arguments.

He played great. I am in awe of his net play today. Murray fired some hard shots and him and he absorbed them and just laid then dead on the grass. Some were on the run too - just awesome. Also, he really got the angles opened up today. Good job Roger.
