Why do some Fed fans make excuses for the guy?

I am one of the biggest Federer fans but his performance yesterday was pathetic!Considering what was on the line, he gave a half hearted effort or less then that. Then some fed fans say he was tired.Give me a break!!Did Del Potro look tired in his match against Djokovic? That was for a bronze medal:-?I credit Murray for playing well and taking it to him!!This is one of my biggest negatives about him when it comes to giving him the title, the Goat!!I am sure a Nadal on one leg would have given a better effort then this guy did.

I am not a Fed fan but what you say about Del Potro winning vs Djoko....there is a big difference in age so that might have been why.Fed is 31 and Del Potro under 25.And Djoko right now is so so and Murray played the match of his life....consider these, maybe

I am one of the Federer fans who say that he was tired (which contributed a large part to his loss to Murray). You have to remember that Del Potro is all of 23 years old, and Federer turns 31 in just a couple of days. I'd expect Federer to be a bit tired and Del Potro to be a bit more resilient at that age.

And to be completely honest, you don't sound like "one of the biggest Federer fans" if you bash him like you just did. Just saying.

I guess my question to you would be, what reason do you think Federer would have to choose not to put in a better effort?

Its critique.Whats wrong with that.Tired is the biggest excuse there is.I thought he moved well the whole match. His play was pathetic.I thought Murray just wanted it more.He couldnt do nothing on Murray's second serve.

I also wonder why he chips in alot of second return serves.Mcenroe always kills him for that.He says he needs to hit the return with authority.

Maybe because he was satisfy with even getting a medal? The bottom line is that his body language stunk!!

I remember a few years ago when Nadal had a long semifinals match in the aussie open and he came back to beat Federer in 5 sets.

Murray simply dominated him. Nuff said, lets move on to Cincy where I will be stringing next week. :)

He was relieved to have gotten a medal. He didnt seemed into it.Did u see the match? This is what separates him and Nadal i think in their matches.Nadal plays the points bigger. He also doesnt waste break points like Roger does

Nadal's strategy has gotten him 11 slams, Djoker's 5. Roger's 17. I agree it's frustrating him watching him chip those returns back, but surely he must know something more than we do, no?

You'll be stringing at Cincinnati?!
Just the man for racket advise.
What section?

Which players are you stringing for?

yes, I will be stringing at cincy this year.

Not sure what you mean by "what section". Could you elaborate?

Well I'd like to buy a racket for my 15 year old daughter and my partner suggested a make. I can't remember what it was but she thought it was a bargain at £20.
I'm suspicious of cheap rackets and, having been out of tennis for a long time now, don't know anything about racket technology, sizes, grips, weights, tension and where we stand now.
I know when I was buying rackets many years ago, anything under £60 wasn't acceptable.
My daughter is a novice so there's a lot of factors.
This isn't the section to discuss racket theory though so which part of the forum should we discuss?
And what exactly will be your role at Cincy?
That sounds like an interesting job.

Why do people automatically equate explanations with excuses? When two top players play and the result is that lopsided, surely there's something more going on than "one guy played better than the other". I thought Federer looked sluggish and flat but he mentioned that it was more mental fatigue. Perhaps it was a bit of both? So while Murray clearly played a great match, Federer was nowhere near his best level.

For once I agree with you but I hope you will extend this treatment to other players as well.

IMO not being able to recover, being sick, being injured etc can be reasons but can never be excuses. Being fit is part of the game, if you're not , it DOES mean the other player was better.

exactly, clearly fed was tired mentally and physically, Wimbledon was proof where he beat Murray in straight sets, murray never threatened federer. I also heard federer had a back problem, this is the main reason for his losses I believe and is the reason he lost most of the slams to nadal.

Of course I agree with you. The "he wasn't 100%" is thrown around here as an excuse way too much. I've stated numerous times that it's silly, because in a physically demanding sport, players will almost always carry nicks and bruises, and various injuries. But if you step onto the court, you are fit to play. As simple as that.

The fact is that Federer would not have played a match till the Rogers Cup after Wimbledon as, for whatever reason, he is playing himself sparingly.

The Olympics is crammed into the calendar and that didn't suit Federer, but a home Olympics with team GB did suit Murray.

exactly, Fed did not care about olympics, he never even talked about in his pres conferences before, he prioritized the masters since it helps him prepare for us open where he will once again dominate like he has these years

Obviously you didn't watch that match. Federer won in 4 sets, not straight sets. Murray won the 1st and almost won the 2nd.

On the contrary, he made constant references to London 2012 as one of his goals and the singles gold medal the only thing left for him to achieve.

Hi drak; could you post some interesting pro racket/string facts about the players when you have started stringing in Cincy? Thanks! :)

First, it looks like YOU are making excuses for the loss.

Second, some fans of all players make excuses when their player loses. So it's not just Fred.

What discussion would you have if no one was allowed to analyze a match?

I completely agree with you. The least Federer could do was splash some water on his face during the ad breaks, and pretend to be sweating. Then his fans would have at least got the impression that he tried.

Federer had a potential chance in the 2nd set in that 20+ minute game to come back. He put in everything he had. After that he was not only spent physically but also mentally.

Why do any fans make excuses when their favourite player loses (or when the player they "hate" wins)? To rationalize it, make it easier to deal with it etc.

Murray was a much better player on the day than Fed, that's what counts, everything else is largely irrelevant.

Why are excuses made by Federer fans different to excuses made by fans of other players when their hero loses?

Federer bashing / putting down his fans is a favourite passtime of many, but I challenge the premise of the title of this thread.

As for the Olympic final, it is not beyond the wit of man to see that Federer was completely jiggered after the Del Potro match & had nothing left for the final. If anyone thinks otherwise, I suggest they are kidding themselves.

Murray had an excellent Olympics. He beat Djokovic en route to the title & a much exhausted Federer. I take nothing away from his win - but to dismiss the fact that Federer was exhausted is to be selective about the facts.

Federer may have been tired but he would still have won that match if Murray hadn't upped his level and kept him under pressure.

An explanation is a reason for a loss you agree with. An excuse is a reason for a loss you disagree with.

"You" being used in a general sense of course.

Federer wanted that Gold medal, and if he had anything else to give he would have given it. Whatever the reason for his subdued performance, it wasn't for lack of trying.

I think he was extremely pissed off with the umpire and crowd. Being jingoistic, I was annoyed by them, I'm British. I don't think he wanted it as badly as wimbledon. I agree with you that Rafa would have fought harder. I feel sometimes that Roger is so talented he wants to win through greatness and doesn't like the scrapping ugly tennis so much. He always looks like the guy with more weapons and more imperious against Nadal but when it gets to struggling for it Nadal keeps on more. He did smack some of the second serves back but they kept going just outside the baseline. He never got into a rhythm seemingly.

I personally make excuses for Federer because I think he is clearly the most talented tennis player of all time. I think this is exlempfieid by him having the most or tied for most wins at 4 of the 5 biggest tournaments. That being said, I always feel like if Federer plays his A game with confidence, he is untouchable. Of course, I understand that it takes two to play tennis, but Federer's otherworldly greatness can take his opponent out of the picture.

Because they are fans!! Give Roger a break the man is 31 the amount of miles he has on his body. He has won almost everything that has to be won many times. So his body doesn't recover from a 19-17 third set. Give him a break. Enjoy the few years that left. When he is gone your going to wish he never left.

OH boy, do you even want to open this can o' worms? Especially considering how Nadal seems to blame every loss to an injury? How murray cringes in agonizing pain everytime he misses a routine shot, countless times in just a single match?

You want some excuses? Look to all the other players, you can find examples in pretty much the majority of them. Fed isn't one to be singled out, buddy.

Federer may have been tired but he would still have won that match if Murray hadn't upped his level and kept him under pressure.

Federer had nothing left in his tank after the Del Potro match & that, as far as I am concerned, is it. Had Federer been fresher, he would have fought for it, and made more of a match of it. He has said that the Olympic Gold is important to him & he would not have given up unless he couldn't give more.

That said, Murray played superbly & deserved the win. Ge did well to give Federer few opportunities to get momentum. It was wonderful to see him win something big at last, and he will hopefully be able to take confidence from it, and take it to the next level by winning a slam. Beating both Djokovic & Federer in straight sets & going on to win the silver in the mixed doubles is a quite outstanding performance.

As for those harping on about excuses, there is no greater excuse maker than Nadal & his his uncle. His fans have no need to make excuses because their hero & / or his uncle are way ahead of them. Quite why this seems to escape those who are concerned about excuses being made is difficult to understand, unless of course the purpose is to pour scorn on Federer / his fans rather than have an open debate about excuse making.
