Why does everybody love Del Potro?

Nadal and Djokovic fans are grateful to him for stopping Federer from adding to his slam count by beating him twice at the USO.

Federer and Nadal fans are very happy that he stopped Djokovic twice from going for Olympic Gold.
Speaking as a super-Fedfan, I don't care about OG at all. Slams > WTF/M100 > OG

That 09 USO loss was much more painful than watching Novak hoist a hypothetical OG. That would have made 3 (maybe 4, assuming he still wins AO10) Slams in a row for Fed, during what was IMO the finest stretch of his career...and would have been a "Fed Slam", winning RG, Wimbledon, US, and AO the next year. He would have held all 4 titles at once.

DelPo is likeable, although I used to like him more. One thing I really dig is that he was pretty active on Twitter/FB for a while, and even after he was eliminated from a tournament he would still post on social media about it and solicit dialogue with his fans about the remaining matchups. I thought that was cool and really made him look like he wasn't just a player but a fan as well.

I'm breaking the taboo.

Del Possum is one of the few pros I've seen/heard berate the ball persons. It really turned me off. And I've never liked his game. He mops around the court and his much ballyhooed forehand, while effective, is not a good looking shot. Add in the well worn possum routine and it doesn't add up to love.

You can't criticize Stan The Man but you can criticize his doppelgänger Tankwrinka especially if you're a fan that has paid to see STM play or a tournament director that has paid him appearance money.
Gonna have to disagree there. Even in Stanimal mode Wawrinka has perfected the art of looking like he's about to keel over and die at various junctures.

Del Potro is not the only one that plays possum.

Not that I like the behavior, I don't. But bringing up Stan as an example to the contrary is a bad example.

Also find it kind of weird that suddenly the possum thing is so prevalent on TTW when it comes to Stan/Delpo.

If anyone started that whole thing, it was Murray. How many times would he grab at his ligaments like he tore his ACL or something after people hit winners by him  .

AO 2010 final is a great example of such.

Del Potro is not the only one that plays possum.
Monfils and Murray are also fully paid up members of the playing possum club. In one match when Rafa was playing Monfils, Monfils was limping after every other shot. At one point, he walked half way up to the net like he was going to shake hands, then returned to the baseline to receive serve.

Kyrgios is also a member of the possum club.

Surprised Federer did not get a warning for that one. Seemed pretty arrogant on his part.
Fedr got a fine for audible obscenity but he still won the sportsmanship award that year. .....and fans' favourite and footballer of the year.

I have to register here to say I am a big fan of Del Potro
I think he’s tall and good looking. And he looks like he’s a kind and nice person, at least from afar. His game is attacking and the forehand is fun to watch. I can’t help but feel sorry for his injury problems. I also think him having a lot of beautiful model girlfriends kinda add to his appeal lol
I am a Stan fan too btw

He actually has a number of detractors here. The guy is a good sport and friendly the vast majority of the time, but can still act like a kid when he's disgruntled. It gets a lot of attention because it's against the norm, I remember his matches with Fed a couple of years back, a lot of backlash from the fans here on TW lol.... His slow lumbering pace in his matches also rile up some fans, personally I think the Del Possum act is not as bad as people make it out to be, just a lot more cautious about his body than other players.

I think we should give a pass to guys like Delpo and Murray who have had to undergo genuine career-threatening surgeries which means they are not true possums. That term should be reserved for those players who are fond of taking MTOs and go limping about the place when things look bad and then all of a sudden start running around the court like a demented gazelle when the danger is passed. I suspect we all know a few players we might recognise there.

In all my years playing and watching tennis I am yet to come across a person who openly dislikes or criticises Delpo no matter whose camp they fall in. Is this just because of his ability to keep coming back from injuries or his attitude in general?
I didn't

I never liked him because of his sign to heaven to his guardian angel (his sister who is no longer alive, I am told) when he wins (and not when he loses). Does he really believe that such angels exist, and if they do, they make him win when they want? Which means they are also responsible for making his opponent lose. Not an angel at all.

No offense, but that's kind of a petty reason to dislike somebody.

Maybe he's just dedicating each of his victories to her? Whether she exists as an angel or not is entirely up to him to believe.

But such beliefs affect others because they end up producing irrational ways of thinking in society, which in turn leads to dictatorships.

Yeah I don't like anyone displaying religion in public, whether it is a head dress, some symbol painted on the body, different kind of clothes, etc.

I also don't like Serena and Venus because of their constant yapping about god.

many athletes are superstitious.
and when we talk about South America in particular, many people there are very religious.

Yes, and Argentina in particular has been a big problem in the area of certain women's rights which I will not discuss. High-profile players who appear to be religious make the others emboldened. That is the reason you can't dismiss all these as personal beliefs. It is not like his preference for a brand of soap.

Del Potro is the gentle giant of tennis. Always a likeable player, wish he had won the Stefan Edberg award at least once. His resilience coming back from injury time and time again, combined with his endearingly humble and friendly attitude is hard for anyone not to respect.

Whatever your feelings about this I don't think we can order him not to blow a kiss to heaven when he wins a match. He has the right to do what feels best for him. It's got nothing to do with anybody else.

Atleast it isn't as bad as Chang implying god wanted him to win more than anyone else.

I think people also have a load of sympathy for him because of the injuries that kept holding him back from more GS titles.
