Why ex players are jumping more on Djokovic bandwagon

I saw the highlights of 1996 year end championship final between Sampras and Becker. It was a brilliant 5 setter closely fought match.

Later on I came to think,

Federer was Sampras's inheritor as the world's best player. Initially Fed and Sampras were buddies. But as soon as Djoker started dominating , Sampras was leaned towards Djoker
Becker you know..totally sucking on djokovic
Agassi also on Djoker's side more.
And so are other ex player.

Only player who is on Fed's side seems Edberg

Sampras gets mad about the littlest of things, and Fed beating him at Wimbledon 2001 isn't little.

Agassi, same. Fed smoked him and was fairly confident while doing it, that really rubbed Andre the wrong way.

I think some of them, deep down felt like Federer wasn't "all that", especially on the clutchess front, and were happy that Djokovic and Rafa "exposed" him. I'm just speculating here.

Literally not the case.

People ask the past players about Djoker because he is on top and still playing... so of course they are going to say positive things about him. Go ask Rafa as well lol, he will give the same type of answers.

Ex-players are sucking on Djokovic because it's their job and they get paid for it, just like they were sucking on Patrick Mahomes in the past year. The goal is to generate interest to make money. Simple as that

2005 USO final was a tight match. I think Fred was a little nervous out there until after the TB.
Gotta give credit to AA, I think (and you know I'm a Fredfan).

That video is from 8 years ago when Djokovic was still on 12 slam titles! How misleading.

Sampras is not active in tennis media. He has nothing to gain from calling Djokovic the GOAT.

But Sampras wants the sport that he loves so much continue to grow in interest, not the other way around.

And like many ex-players insisting Lebron and Maholmes as the next greatest of all time. Nobody is buying it.

LOL. Sampras isn’t thinking of FEDR or Egg. You are. Sampras is playing golf and smoking cigars. The only ex-players that comment on this are still involved in the front facing part of the tennis business.

Nah. Lots of people believe Lebron has a strong case against Jordan. Even if Jordan has the higher highs, Lebron has far greater longevity achievements. Mahomes is a straw man as he is way too early in his career to make a judgement. And you can't read Sampras' mind to say he is being disingenuous in believing Djokovic is the GOAT. After all, most people do at this point.

The name of the game is to relentlessly fellate whatever is happening right now to get people interested in whatever is happening right now.

imo it’s because djokovic has removed all reasonable doubt and no other reason. also it is of my opinion that a truly great athlete figures out how to win even when they aren’t playing at their peak level. Djokovic embodies this more than anyone.

Very wrong.

There are two things. Present and past.

Past should be glorified and present should be enjoyed.

The name of the game is NOT to fellate something. Every new generation becomes bigger and better and this needs to be enjoyed acknowledging that past was worse but present is build on the past.

I'm not saying what I said was right, I'm saying it's what people do. :D

I enjoy the present plenty! The kids are alright!

Does it matter?
I like to listen to former greats when they speak about match strategy, what it's like to prepare and play in the biggest tourneys and possibly what it's like to face different players. Along with some great stories you can't get elsewhere.

I really don't care about their player rankings.

I *love* that interview where Borg tells Cash that Fed is the best ever (Cash can't stand Fed).

I've wondered did Cash start hating Fed before or after Mirka told Cash to stuff it after disparaging Fed and her
Oh, I didn't hear about that- sounds juicy! Nothing like some nasty gossip to get the juices going..
I'm thinking about Cash gloatingly saying after Fed lost the W 08 final: "there will be no more
multi-slam years.." so what did Fed do the very next year?

Won the Channel Slam..

heh

Nadal is better. 22 majors despite missing 15 major tournaments through injury alone, and won most of the biggest matches against Federer and Djokovic.

I like how it must be because they are trying to promote the sport, or some thing like that, instead of it being their actual genuine feelings that in their opinion, Djokovic is the greatest player of all time. Maybe, just maybe, they value winning and titles over everything else, considering they were trying to do the same themselves.

Imagine what ex-players say when no cameras are around. They know all about declining with age and facing strong youngsters, which means they also know why Nole in his 30s won 12 slams.

And one of those majors won after the political removal of his biggest rival, lol.

I also don't know about Nadal winning most of the mutual finals against Djoker on the ATP Tour, lol.

And a lot of people don't have Lebron at #2, let alone equal to Jordan who is widely regarded as #1. Lebron(like Djokovic) is the product of recency bias.

Mahomes is a straw man as he is way too early in his career to make a judgement.
Agree. I don't even have him in the same league as Montana

And you can't read Sampras' mind to say he is being disingenuous in believing Djokovic is the GOAT. After all, most people do at this point.

Stats are stats and ya can't knock that.

GOATs....different level for most, and as mentioned early, Fed and Nadal will always be more admired and respected there.

He’s part of the coolest tennis generation in history and still killing it, it’s almost impossible not to respect him at this point, especially knowing how many legendary matches he’s been a part of for the past couple decades

Agreed. When the future generations will see his matches, how many times he has pulled a win from jaws of defeat, they are going to be amazed.

MJ is the goat in basketball, Djokovic is the GOAT in Tennis, no qualms with that.
