Why Ezone 100 for Casper Ruud?

I was surprised when I learned that Casper Ruud uses the Ezone 100. I guess I always assumed it was the 98. Has he always used a 100 square inch racquet since

Ruud is not a big guy, and as such, probably needs a racquet that helps him generate pace and spin. He's got great foot speed and powerful technique, so the EZ100 fits the bill pretty well. Yonex has backed him since he made his way onto the tour and has surely had him trying a variety of frames/strings until Ruud found just the right combination.

believe its a longbody DR 100 (probably 28 inches not 27.5)

I wonder how much Ruud is handicapped at net by using the longbody EZ100? Not that he comes to net much, but with grass and hard courts upcoming, he'll need maneuverability over putaway power up there.

I'd say just about as much as Roddick was w/ his PD+ or Isner is w/ his Prince LB, which is to say 'not at all'...
Good point. These guys are so talented, they just overcome changes in equipment or grip changes with ease. Although the mere sight of Roddick or Isner crowding the net must be more intimidating than when Casper gets up there.

Tangent observation, here:

While quite a few WTA pros use 100 in² frames, I still was surprised to find out that Kontaveit uses the Pure Strike 100.

She's such a hard hitter & clean striker I would expected the 98 to be her stick, but, nope, it's the 100. (And last I read in the forums she uses Isospeed Black Fire.)

Ezone 100 has a surprising lower launch angle for a 100 16x19. Every time I try it I get a bit surprised. Similar launch to my speed pro 18x20. Ezone had decent control and spin/pop on tap for his forehand although 99.9% is dependant on his technique. Good clay weapon

2018. I just ordered a 2020. I’m still debating if I should instead pickup the 2022. My 18 is 330sw stock. That’s a lot more then the 22

Isner yes but not sure about Roddick. His net approaches are not that solid.

I think of his game in the way I think of all the guys who use Pure Aeros to hit massive forehands.
The difference with Ruud is that he is also an explosive mover. So he gives off Rafa vibes with the lighter, 100 square inch frame. At his best, of course.

I believe I unknowingly came across a Ruud racquet in a random trade I made some weeks ago.

It’s a DR100+ with the 2020 ezone 100 paintjob (paintjob is for reg 100, not 100+). It weighs 318g unstrung and has Yonex prostock code on it. The handle is custom and the buttcap has no way of being opened.

Based on this racquet, it is not a leather grip underneath, but just the standard Yonex synthetic grip.

My question for anybody that knows (please DM if possible) is: how much lead does he have under the headguard for his lead setup when he doesn't use lead on the side of the hoop?

The racquet I have was used with lead on the side of the hoop, and I am aware of the amount of lead under the headguard in this setup; however, he currently does not appear to be using lead on the side of the hoop anymore, and I am wondering if he increased the amount of lead under the headguard or whether it is the same amount.

I am also curious as to how people know he is using ptp 1.30 in the crosses now. Some time ago, a stringer here posted that he personally strung for him at a tournament and that it was ptp 1.25 at the time.

Cheers!

I tagged people in this thread + others who have made confident assertions, or at least intelligent inquiries, about specs of the racquet in the hopes that they might actually have some answers and are not just going off a hunch. Thanks!

He seemed to change his lead placement/usage depending on the surface etc... or he did (he would have visible lead on hard but not on clay)- but I think Yonex try to do away with visible lead on their frames and make him special layups weighted where he likes - but he might still have some under the bumper - but 318g unstrung is definitely the number that anyone is aware of publicly at least
