Why Ezone 100 for Casper Ruud?

My question for anybody that knows (please DM if possible) is: how much lead does he have under the headguard for his lead setup when he doesn't use lead on the side of the hoop?

The racquet I have was used with lead on the side of the hoop, and I am aware of the amount of lead under the headguard in this setup; however, he currently does not appear to be using lead on the side of the hoop anymore, and I am wondering if he increased the amount of lead under the headguard or whether it is the same amount.

I am also curious as to how people know he is using ptp 1.30 in the crosses now. Some time ago, a stringer here posted that he personally strung for him at a tournament and that it was ptp 1.25 at the time.

Cheers!

I tagged people in this thread + others who have made confident assertions, or at least intelligent inquiries, about specs of the racquet in the hopes that they might actually have some answers and are not just going off a hunch. Thanks!
what are the swingweight and balance for the one you have?

Not sure of the swingweight. I could measure using the swing method with a phone to capture, but I dont have confidence in the overall accuracy of it! I just use it when I am trying to match my own racquets because it's repeatable for me. Some day I will take a pit stop at a pro shop and ask to use a machine there.

As for balance, with the lead on the side of the hoop it is ~3HL. Without the lead on the side of the hoop, the balance is ~4.5HL. Both measurements are with the lead under the headguard remaining though... I probably won't take that off. I replaced the grommets/headguards once with the yellow DR100 version to get a better look at everything, so now my throat grommets are yellow instead of the typical blue that goes on the 2020 ezones :P

Ruud coming to the net? Has that happened before?
Someone hasn't been keeping up?! During the early parts of Ruud's 2024 spring campaign on hard courts, he's made a point of going up and finishing off some points with a deft touch. Angle volleys, covering overheads and even a few chip-and-charge returns were a BIG change for him. Ruud continues to broaden his game and while his grinding baseline game remains the same, he is doing more to ensure he can contest points from anywhere on court.

That’s awesome. I’d love to watch more of his matches in that case. Seems like a nice guy. Awesome forehands. But always was a little bored watching his matches. I’ll give it a new try.

I believe I unknowingly came across a Ruud racquet in a random trade I made some weeks ago.

It’s a DR100+ with the 2020 ezone 100 paintjob (paintjob is for reg 100, not 100+). It weighs 318g unstrung and has Yonex prostock code on it. The handle is custom and the buttcap has no way of being opened.

Based on this racquet, it is not a leather grip underneath, but just the standard Yonex synthetic grip.
Really enjoyed the inside info(y)
So you've measured the actual length - interesting that the paint job is standard length; if it's 27.5" pro stock why don't Yonex just label it as a plus?

because they release his new PJ before the + length has been released later in the cycle and the regular version sells better/is more accessible so they don't want to drive players to the +, plus its probably just easier to have everyone on the regular pj

Off topic, but that picture shows great extension of the arms on 2HBH. That's how it should be done.

On topic, the Ezone100 has a moderately low launch angle and moderate spin access but Casper hit's tons of high heavy topspin shots off both sides. His FH rivals Nadal's for spin and frequently exceeds Nadal's spin. Just goes to show it's the player and not the racket.

Casper outlines his racquets/strings here in this interview with Chris.

strings at 57 - Hybrid of 125/130
Same racquet since he switched to Yonex (DR100+) but it's a "little longer now" - so he extended his frame further from 27.5 (to somewhere between 27.5 and 28 inch) at some point - so earlier pro stock frames may be 27.5 and later ones longer once he went up in length

The plot thickens…

Breaks relatively thick poly in an hour too, I guess because of his heavy topspin style.

Also mentions interestingly that when he was with Babolat he was playing with RPM Team (which makes sense with him using Poly Tour Pro in the hybrid)

Great video! I'm glad we were able to confirm 1.30 ptp in crosses.

I'm guessing when he moved away from using lead on the side of the hoop that he also extended the racquet slightly further (when he transitioned to 2022 pj). Keeps the swingweight higher while fitting his topspin style better with lower overall weight for increased RHS. Plus, it seems like he likes this setup for all surfaces now, whereas he used to use lead on the side of the hoop for hard court but took it off for clay. I saw a couple pics of him having lead on the side of the hoop in 2022 ezone pj (where he would have allegedly gone to an even longer racquet), but it must have been a short-lived experiment because he hasn't done it at all in recent times.

I haven't played RPM Team before, why would it make sense that he would use ptp as cross now?

Also, how would one even get access to his pro stocks or old racquets? I happened to get lucky in a trade and didn't find out later until I noticed oddities in the frame, which led me to investigate further. I've been playing it as my main stick and having a blast! Would really like to get access to another one so I can keep this train rolling for as many years as I can!

It's a bit softer/not as spin oriented than Rafa/Stan's RPM Blast we probably assumed he would have used - and then went to a hybrid with a stiffer spin string and the softer string

Also what grip size is the frame that you have?

Has Ruud switched from the DR to the 2022 Ezone?

This is a now sold listing but in the photos it looks like there's 2 mains skips instead of 1 at the bottom and it doesn't have the textured DR bumper?
I think it might have been for promotional purposes - they have to make current dupes of their setups to sell new rackets

Jim Courier just said that Casper Ruud is using an EZONE 98 for Laver Cup. Source: Darren Cahill. It’s rare for a player to go down in headsize and improve, but this could be a good switch.
Yup. I’ve heard the same thing and honestly I observed it before they even said it. Looks like a 98 mold.

Can you guys tell which mold is it? still DR version or some different one?

EDIT: based on throat design near grip I am guessing DR98, but would be nice if someone can confirm

Uhh, hard to tell but some details looks exactly like my 25 EZONE 98.

Frame width looked thinner then 25, and the top of the frame looked more like 22, but other parts looked very similar.

Why would he go to a 98
My best guess, he is testing the slightly smaller head size to see if he can swing it more quickly through the air, and hit harder with more control compared to his original DR 100+. Could help with his first serve too. The extended 98 is a hell of a good serving frame, and Casper was really knocking down first serves with it yesterday.

I get the impression that Casper is not necessarily a super particular guy when it comes to equipment, and that he’s just trying this out for the heck of it while he has the time to see if he can unlock something a little extra. I mean, why not? He doesn’t have any points left to defend all year lol.

No. The DR98 is 27. The DR98+ is 27.5.
It's supposed to be 27, but in reality it's a bit longer. I have one and it's just about 5 mm longer than any of my regular length racquets (It's not the deformation of the frame as I've done both strung and unstrung comparisons). A friend of mine has confirmed that his copy is also longer than 27. I believe some other owners have mentioned it here a while back haha. Quite weird.

I've never held a DR98+, that's why I'm wondering if it's also slightly longer than it should be.
