Why has McEnroe become so negative as a broadcaster

Inner Game

Semi-Pro
After listening to McEnroe during the current US Open it's become very apparent that he's become a negative, bumbling old man. I know Mac has a lot of insight into the game....but talk about the game Mac...not how much money Gulbis parents have...John just analyze tennis don't worry about their personal lives....
Maybe McEnroe's troubles all began from this video from the 80's....and I also added 2 other videos of the current day McEnroe acting like an ass....If it wasn't for tennis Mac would be like Vince in the infomercials...lol....maybe that is Mac

Enjoy

Did Mc Enroe study journalism?...How can a mass media have unprepared personnell...Perhaps he knows much about Tennis but he doesnt know anything about journalism...The same happens to Mats Wilander in Eurosport...
Mass media should have proficient journalists not ex tennis players...

Mac was an a-hole as a player, why should he be different off the court?

I remember one US Open, he got mad at a spectator I think for the camera flashing or something, he actually went over to the poor women and cussed her out. I couldnt believe the umpire didnt fine him for confronting a paying spectator!

Class act that McEnroe.

So, if he doesn't think much of Gulbis, you have to poison the well and discredit him as a person, a commentator, and a tennis player. Are you a Gulbis fanboy?

McEnroe is clearly the best tennis commentator over the past 15 years. Why you start multiple threads continually bashing him is beyond me -- you seem to take his legitimate criticism of Gulbis personally, since its the firs thing you always talk about in your threads.

But he is not a qualified journalist...he played tennis ...he didnt study to be a journalist...

I do think McEnroe's sometimes like a broken record on commentary. Every Blake match he does, he talks how Blake should play with more margin - Blake's played the same way for his whole career, don't you think he's heard the same advice John? You're not the first to mention it, don't act like some sort of revolutionary figure b/c you're saying Blake should play with more margin.

Constantly bringing it up every shot Blake misses in a match isn't gonna help or change matters. I'm sorry, I'm a Blake fanboy. :D

But yes, McEnroe does tend to harp on the same issues over and over - new strings and rackets and their affect on the game, how great Federer is, somehow bringing up Federer/Nadal in every match, how hard Roddick works in every match...it becomes like an old, played out record. Maybe tennis fans have become conditioned to Mac, since he's the best we have (or so we're told), and fail to see some of his shortcomings as an announcer/broadcaster.

Every announcer has shortcomings, but McEnroe is great b/c he was a master of gamesmanship as a player, so he can spot it when he announces. Also he's very adept at determining a player's strategy during a match, when players are getting tight, and at discussing fundamental technique.

BTW, just b/c McEnroe says something over and over again about Blake doesn't mean he's wrong -- it just means Blake is too stubborn and foolish to change. For years announcers said Agassi needed to think more on the court and become more about substance than style -- when he finally did he started winning multiple grand slams.

"Qualified journalist" is almost a meaningless term. I learned from my daughter (worked for ABC News, now NPR) that very few journalists actually studied journalism; they come from a variety of academic and not-so-academic backgrounds.

LOL...I remember that incident. The woman gave it right back to him just as much as he did....because this is New York, baby! (and I should know, being born and raised there). He barked at her, she barked right back at him, no harm, no foul, everyone moved on.

ehh....one man's a-hole is another man's useful orifice (if we didn't have one, we'd be in big trouble pretty quickly). McEnroe has his good and his bad, but I'd certainly rather listen to him than, say, Brad Gilbert.

No denying it though, McEnroe is definitely neurotic and has some mental issues :) In a good way of course!

Once again you just refuse to understand that there are millions of people who DO NOT watch every match televised. There are millions of people tuning in for the first time ever. I do not watch a lot of golf, racing, football...but I tune in every once in a while. So I still want tidbits of info that I normally wouldn't know while watching these other sports.

Plus, It's difficult not to repeat yourself when doing a 3 or 4 hour broadcast. It's akin to going thru the day and not repeating phrases you normally use.

Because "today's rackets and strings have allowed the players to hit the ball way harder than McEnroe's era. Today's players' games are only good because of their technology, not their talent.

p-mac has rubbed off on j-mac, though i still like j-mac's commentating, he has become more complimentary towards the players. his earlier years as a commentator, he was more honest with his opinions, but recently has gone soft, maybe hanging with p-mac has changed him

Please, the other commentators do nothing but worship the american players and their favorites (Sharapova and Fed). Listening is only bearable when John McEnroe is there. The rest of them make me puke!

Ding ding ding. We have a winner. Professional journalism is more about who you know, and not about your educational background.

Mac is bitter for the following reasons:

a) He was a tremendous talent but will never be in GOAT conversations, because he choked away the 84 French to Lendl, he also knows now, in hindsight, he should have travelled to Australia more often, where he would have in all likelihood, wrapped up about 4 Aussie titles. But of course it wasn't "hip" to play there. In all likelihood, it was just laziness. Today, you can't get away with being a lazy, exhibition playing stooge.

b) Becker and his new brand of brute tennis ushered Johnny Mac futile.

c) He wasted so much time, energy, patience, and money on a horrible marriage.

He was fun to watch...for about 3 years of his lengthy career.

I do like Gulbis and I use to really like McEnroe.....but the wind has changed for Johnny Mac.....let the European commentators take over...much more entertaining....even Cahill is better then current crop of USA talking heads....

and btw for being an out of shape rich boy....Gulbis gave Murray a decent match......

But he is not a qualified journalist...he played tennis ...he didnt study to be a journalist...

Maybe its a personal thing but I prefer to hear comments from a proffesional tennis player instead of a glorified journalist. I think someone who has been there and done that carries more weight than a person who studied the art of presentation.

Mac is annoying as hell. Most of the time he talks about his past, honestly, we don't care as much about it as he does. We only care about the commenting on the current match we watch. And yes, just comment on the damn tennis, leave the personal lives out of it. We don't need to know that craps. Mac and motto-mouth Carillo should not be given a microphone. They annoy the hell out of the viewers. I always mute motto-mouth Carillo but I am going to do the same to Mac soon enough.

..and I don't blame him - there is no place for camera flash or mobile phones during an intensive tennis match

No, Gulbis never posted a threat to Murray.

Why has McEnroe become so negative as a broadcaster? It's because he's getting older. The older you grow, the more bitter you become!
