Why has Nadal only won one AO?

seems like it would be his second best slam given the slower hard court than USO. He had also missed more Us opens. In 11 he plays in all slam finals except Australia and he loses to ferrer like what? I think the reason why he will never catch Fed is his poor performances at AO.

Because Nadal's luck at the Australian Open has been absolutely dreadful. He could have won something like 4 or 5 Australian Open titles had things gone slightly differently, but he only has the 1 title. The ones that stand out are pulling his hamstring against Ferrer in 2011, blowing a 4-2 lead against Djokovic in the 2012 final, losing to Wawrinka in the 2014 final having previously won all 12 of their matches without losing a set, and the 2017 final against Federer where he blew a 3-1 fifth set lead. And then there's other things like Tsonga playing his career best match to beat Nadal in their 2008 semi final.

Yes — each of these things is definitely attributable to luck. A coin flip, really!

In all seriousness tho.
Bad Luck.
Seems Nadal and Djokovic have had a bad luck major.
French Open for Djokovic and AO for Nadal.
Nadal was very lucky tho one year that 2009 to get Fed in the Final.
He was owning Fed back then mentally.
So Nadal did have at least one year of luck there.

I'd agree with that. He's just not had good luck at AO. Some early losses, plus only converting 1 out of 4 finals.

Conversely you could say he's been quite lucky at USO. In 2010 he really only needed to win one big match (the finals vs Novak). Highest seed he faced on the way was Verdasco (#8 in quarters, semis was against #12 Youzhny). Similar in 2013; big win against Novak in finals, but prior to that, pretty easy path (Robredo #19 in QF, Gasquet #8 in SF).

So it all evens out in the end.

Simple. Nadal is simply not good enough, and pretty much fluked the win over Verdasco in 2009. In 2011, even had he beaten Ferrer, there was no way in hell was he beating Djokovic. 2012, blew a lead, but that's all coming from Nadal fan gurls. It's never pointed out how many stupid errors Djoko made in that match. 2014, he was being destroyed by Wawa and that he won a set shows that Nadal was not that badly "injured". So basically Nadal was lucky to win one and his fans should be happy for that.

It all evens out, Nadal with his lucky mug draws in 2010, 2013 US Opens and twice having an AWOL Djokovic in the final evens the bad luck in AO.

At least Djokovic can say that he lost to Nadal 6 times at Roland Garros, a current 9-time French Open champion. He usually had one man standing in his way, and another time with Federer in 2011. Nadal's bad luck in Australia is a lot more crazy, from debilitating injury during a quarter final, players zoning unexpectedly (Gonzalez, Tsonga, Wawrinka), and blowing break leads in the fifth sets of finals before losing (to different opponents).

I'm at like, episode 10.

There's nothing in it for Start da Game, however. I think the best episodes so far are the first three (More Than Meets the Eye).
Imo, the best episode in season 1, apart from the "More Than Meets the Eye" trilogy, is the no. 16 - The Heavy Metal War. And S2 is obviously better with some legendary eps.

I can't imagine anyone beating Nadal in either the 2010 or 2013 US Opens, especially 2010. Can you? I personally was confident of Nadal beating Federer in hypothetical matches in both tournaments, and in 2011 for that matter, but I was much more cautious about Nadal's chances in both their 2012 and 2014 Australian Open semi final matches, both of which Nadal ended up winning.

Do not be too greedy. Djokovic choked like a dog in USO13 final. If Nadal won 2 AO and 1 USO you will feel much better.

I am sure some Fed fans must be wondering why Fed ONLY won five USO titles.

Who knows. I could not imagine Wawa beating Nadal in 2014 AO, but it happened. Similarly with Cilic over Fed and Nishikori over Novak in 2014 USO.
Point is, the more matches a player has to play against top opposition through the course of a slam, the more likely a loss somewhere along the way, even if the player is strongly favored in each individual matchup.

You can play the same game for Federer@French Open. He could have won 2006/2007, 2011 IF things had gone better. What a lame post Mustard. I expect better from you.

that's bad luck? ok? Bad Luck is getting robbed on a line call or suffering some freak accident (those were all injuries that Nadal is susceptible to, not freak ones). How the hell is blowing leads bad luck? That's his own fault.

That's absurd. That's like saying Federer has had "bad luck" at the USO, or else he should have 7 or 8. It's not bad luck, it's his own fault. Nadal's blown leads are his own fault (and if we are continuing this absurd line of thinking then he was lucky as hell to even be in a 5th set in 2012). His injuries have poor timing, but it's probably a direct result of his style of play and he's had them his whole career. Still doubtful that he would have won any of those tournaments.

I don't think any measure of "luck" could have helped Nadal against Tsonga, let alone Wawrinka. Those guys just flat out beat him.

Yes, in theory he could have won the Djokovic and Fed matches because he was up late, but that's the nature of these tournaments. Let's not forget that he could easily have lost to Verdasco in 2009 by that same argument and have 0 AO titles.

here's a flashback ..your boy was lucky to even be in the 5th set in AO 12. djoko missed an easy FH at the net at 5-4 in the 4th set breaker. He'd have been 6-4 up in the breaker had he hit it in and would've finished the match in 4 sets.

oh and even if nadal had got through to the final in 11, uninjured, he'd have lost to djokovic.

gonzales/tsonga zoning etc. are things that happen. If anything your by was lucky to avoid a zoning in player at USO 10/USO 13 before the finals -- both real weak draws.

its also cute how you think nadal would have a good shot at federer in AO 07 or djokovic in AO 08 ( if not for gonzales or tsonga ) ..

you're delusional to think nadal could've/should've won 4-5 AOs. 2 AOs at max.

Reasons for Nadal's AO Results:

1. Poor Preparation.
Nadal thrives on match wins, and developing confidence that way going into major tournaments. He never gets that with the AO. His leadup to AO has always been unusual imo, not only starting a new year with very little tournament play but no match wins on the continent. It's fine for someone like a Djokovic, but I don't think it is an ideal preparation for Nadal, who needs the confidence boost of match wins. Thankfully this year his team (maybe Moya?) had the idea to change his pre-AO schedule and play a leadup tourney on the continent and it helped him quite a bit.

2. Level of Competition
The level of competition to Nadal has always been fierce at AO. One of his biggest rivals, Djokovic, plays his best at this tournament. A big barrier that has stopped Nadal from winning at least one extra AO.

3. Shocking Luck / Injury
He has had everything from a bad case of the squirts (blame Qatar), viruses and also his back going out on him (and Wawrinka getting HOT) to blame for not doing better. For sure injury affected him in the 2010 & 2011 versions of the event.

Lol. If Nadal has bad luck, then Djokovic and Fed are deep rooted in misery.

Djokovic has lost 9 major finals and Fed has lost 10. Fed has lost a major final 4 times in 5 sets .

Fed lost 3 SF with MP and 2 points away from a major title twice. Nadal has never lost this close at the final stages

Same reason why Fed hasn't won a USO title in almost a decade- bad luck, bad timing. Nadal's had the misfortune of running into Djoker multiple times (who's one of the greatest at the AO) and Stan who was on another level during that match.

It's like asking why Murray hasn't won any AOs- it makes sense that they should have won more, but each year they had a chance there has simply been a better player on the other side of the net.

Thanks! Some always go to the choke or injury card instead of giving other players credit for winning! :p ;)

Luck definitely has played a role, but it's BS to assume he should have 4 or 5 Australian Opens. Might as well say Andy deserves 4 AO titles because he's been in a number of finals there.

Both Murray and Nadal have had trouble at a number of venues; Nadal lucky to have the 1 title "down under!" Rafa's also has had terrible luck in Miami among other 2 Masters late in the season! Nole's closing in on having it all covered; been in Cincy final, but hasn't overcome speed of the court and play of Murray and Federer who've beaten him there! :p ;)
