Why I admire Rafael Nadal- From a Federer Fan

I respect Nadal even as a Federer fan. If I had to back a player with my life on the line and I got to pick the surface. It would be Nadal on clay.

And I have no doubt he fights when the moment is right.

But I am fully convinced he tanked the early part of this clay season to conserve energy for RG. It was probably the right strategy... but in retrospect it stinks.

I know this is REALLY LONG. But hopefully not too boring! :)

The first time I saw Nadal was when he went up against Federer in Miami in 2004. Back then literally everyone was a Federer fan and I was quite young and new to tennis and Federer was the first player to really draw me in. His coolness, that wavy hair, the class, the elegance, that calm swagger on court and just the whole poetry in motion. For me he is the GOAT and is my fav player of all time!

So seeing Federer lose in straights to some young teen back then was annoying but I took it as a one off match and cast him off as a nobody. The following year Federer came back from 2 sets down and beat this young kid again in Miami. I was glad he won and the comeback was awesome to watch but as a fan it still bothered me as to why he struggled against this nobody while CRUSHING the rest of the field. I mean come on! This kid had no grace. Wore cut off shorts and pirate pants. Didn't have the elegance on court and looked like some street player! How dare he challenge the tennis maestro.

Things got worse! 2005 FO semi, 2006 FO final and I was glad Federer pulled out the wimbledon match in 4! The following year in 2007 Nadal was nuisance! Seriously! go away kid! You don't even hit the ball right. There is NO ART TO YOUR GAME. Wimbledon 2008 turned me into a near Nadal hater. I don't like to use that word because I didn't HATE him but I grew very hostile! I knew Federer wasn't at a 100% but HOW DARE HE! (Rafa) Why didn't he crack down bp at 3-4 in the fifth! That was Fed's match DAMMIT! This untalented dirtballer already won RG!

Australian Open 2009 only made it worse and by then I gave up all hope. I celebrated to NO END when Soderling beat him in RG 2009. FINALLY! Now back to some REAL TENNIS. But what I failed to realize then and what I've really grown to appreciate now is not his game. Yes his topspin forehand is unbelievable and yes his defense is unparalleled. But the reason this guy always found his way back and never went away is because he NEVER GAVE UP. He just didn't. HE NEVER GAVE UP.

How many of us would still keep going if we blew a 2 sets to love lead and were facing bp in the third? How many of us would give up down 2-5 in a set facing set point? How many of us get frustrated at a loss of a point or a set or a game and just get deflated? But this guy just KEEPS COMING BACK. I've never seen anyone shake it off so quickly and get right back into work as this man! He is so focused and FIGHTS SO HARD! You just have to respect that!

If we had HALF the passion and dedication that Nadal has then all of us would be at the top of our chosen fields! Taking hits HEAD ON but never setting ourselves back. Keep it coming and just never giving up. The man has won the same tournament 9 TIMES in 10 YEARS! That is absolutely ridiculous! He ALWAYS finds a way! No matter how hard it is! Whether he's down or sick or the opponent is just outplaying him! Always finds a way! Has he gotten lucky? Yeah sure! but who hasn't? Everyone has their stroke of luck! But the amount of SHEER GRIT this man has is just UNBELIEVABLE.

I disliked him for so long because I naively believed he wasn't talented enough as Federer or Laver or Edberg. But what he lacked in racket skills he more than made up for with Mental toughness, WORK ETHIC and GRIT. I may not be the biggest Nadal fan and I would be lying if I said I don't feel a little happy when he bows out of a grand slam. But the way the man functions and his determination is a MARVEL to watch. Such a strong character! Congrats on your 9th RG Rafa! Well deserved!! And Bud Collins said if there was one player he would want to play for his life it would be Pancho Gonzales. I think for the Open Era it is undoubtedly Rafael Nadal! Federer is still the GOAT in my book (because of records) but Nadal is right up there as one of the greatest beings to ever grace a tennis court!

Good post sirji!
Thanks for reminding me, why you're one of my fav. posters in here. I think I've told you this before also.

Namaskaar :D

Excellent post.

Frankly I think the world of Nadal. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. In Bjorn Borg's time a number of people didn't like the look of the way he played but now he's considered the epitome of elegance on the tennis court.

Nadal's way of hitting his forehand, while he didn't invent that style of hitting it is certainly making that style more popular. But no one can copy the huge racquet speed that he has to get the rpms for that mammoth topspin he can get on the ball. I don't know why so many people don't recognize that you have to have unbelievable talent to hit such heavy topspin on shot after shot, even in the fifth set of a match. Nadal's footwork is incredible in the way he can position himself perfectly to hit his powerhouse forehand. I think Nadal's a dazzling talent.

I prefer Federer's game to Nadal's and don't like what has been done to tennis. However, you can't be upset with Nadal for adapting his game to best suit the conditions that he is playing in and give him the best chance for consistent excellence. Federer too changed his game for the court-conditions.

When Nadal first came on the tour, he had a much more aggressive and flat-hitting game. And also he has become more aggressive on all surfaces since 2007. Had we had the courts of the 1990s, both Nadal's and Federer's games would have been different. I think it'd favor Federer more, but Nadal would be a great in any era or conditions.

The idea that Nadal wins only by conditioning, hard work, and mental toughness, and not what we would call "talent", is a blue-collar fantasy. He is insanely talented.

Also, there is certainly a talent for hard work and mental toughness.

I would tend to agree with this line of thinking. In some subtle ways, both Nadal's peculiar talents and playing styles are difficult to pin down, and so it's usually easier to just chalk much of it up to "hard work" and "mental toughness." There was a graphic from the Ferrer game where you can see from the first set to the second Nadal moved up what looked like 3 or 4 feet on average from where he was behind the baseline in the first set. Beyond these sorts of subtle adaptations, he is actually quite creative; however, it's almost as if he "hides" this until certain crucial moments when it spurts out, only to disappear for a while again. A great contrast to someone like Federer, who just oozes with the most obvious majesty.

I know right? To be honest, I think Nadal would be perfectly content to win every point with a FH to a corner, but when the rival forces him to think on his feet, he doesn't disappoint either.

I agree with the OP and here is why: Rafas serve and backhand should be ranked in the top 5 thru 10. How the heck does one get to be so good with that?

I'm a Fed fan and I'll never root for Nadal.
So OP you're clearly a traitor here.

I have 0 respect for Nadal as a tennis player, why should I?
I don't like his game, I don't like the way he moves on the court, I don't like is little tricks,

I don't like the way he talks,
and most of all, I don't like his fans.

Don't judge me.

Tampax or Kotex: what are we sporting today LovaLova?

SoBad: spot on with callling the OP on the "racquet skills" type comments.

I've really come to like Nadal more and more. If the only things that mattered were personality and mentality, Nadal would be my favorite player by far.

And it's not even that I don't think he's talented, I believe he's just as talented as Federer, and just as skilled as well. The problem is that I need to be able to relate to my favorite player. Nadal is a lefty, and has that weird forehand to top it off. I just can't relate to that, I need to be able to envision myself being that guy on the court.

Federer and Nadal are two side of the same coin when they play each other they employ the same strategies hit FH to each other BH and then boom FH dtl

only fed BH cant handle Nadal FH

both are great player but if nadal wasn't a fake lefty he would not be as successful

nadal wasn't talented that's why he had to make up for it by becoming a lefty

but hard work trumps talent any day

fed fan here root for fed as always when they play but otherwise i go for nadal

It's okay -- you will likely start developing a perspective once you hit puberty.

That Nadal documentary they released before RG brought up some interesting points about Nadal's laterality. Particularly how being right-eye dominant helped his lefty FH stroke, and how he wouldn't have been able to develop that stroke as a righty.

Very distasteful. Perhaps women you know don't use it ?
My Dear Madam,

Please don't get your panties all twisted in knots just like the "hate this/hate that" troll I was facetiously addressing. That troll's post was distasteful, and the only reason you gave it a pass was because it was from a fedfanboy bashing Nadal and everything about him....something you yourself do at every opportunity, so don't try to take the high moral ground here, it won't fly Lady Jane:

Hardly changes the fact that your post stinks. He posted about 'one' player he dislikes. You demean women.

His technique is unique..... but only he has the fitness to keep that up for 5 sets. Infact a lot of his balls land short. But he has the stamina to grind it out defensively if someone tees off on them.

A lot of his balls land short intentionally (not always of course, but often) because when it lands shorter it has more time for the spin on it to work and bounce even higher unless the opponent comes in to about the service line to take it early. Just as he's a genius in making the ball spin to the right or to the left causing his opponents to lunge, or into the body tying the guy all up. These subtleties are missed by most tennis viewers who mistakenly think he's just bashing the ball but it's the main reason he's as successful as he is.

You've got to admit though- it sure ain't pretty.

Who wants tennis to be "pretty"? I love Nadal's tennis style, which is the closest to Muster's style that there has ever been. Going even further back, there was Vilas with a similar style.

Well since Fed has won fans favourite for the last 28 or so times, im gonna say around half of tennis fans...

Well actually there are lots of people that like to watch pretty tennis, myself included. I don't know, I guess I'm just still a bit frustrated that Djokovic can't get to face someone in the RG final with a regular game and 'normal' groundstrokes, he'd have won it at least a few times already. Oh well, that's the way the topspin bounces I guess. Sigh.....................

Federer at his best made tennis look easy. I find that much harder to relate to. Nadal always makes tennis look hard, as it is for mere mortals, and I can relate to his fight. I also love the style of left-hander with the big forehand who loves epic rallies.

beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. I think Federer has better form than Nadal but my brother who does not follow tennis regularly told me Nadal had better form

Did you backhand him?
haha. I was surprised when I heard him saying that. I understand that people disagree about who is the better player but I thought everyone agreed that Federer was the more graceful player. I guess that is not clearcut either :)

Yes, you get that with people who don't play and/or usually watch tennis... I guess it is just down to personal preference of two extremely different styles.

Nadal does a lot of weird stuff that's oddly effective. His forehand of course, but also hitting from seemingly unbalanced positions, while moving backwards, while crouching, with all his weight on the back foot, etc.

Nadals tennis is not beautiful ? Well excuuuuusee me.

He is the most unique tennis player. That alone makes him interesting. And the shots he makes, passing shots, overhead etc. are at insane levels, levels not seen before. I'm not even speaking about his GOAT FH which is something I'll never fully understand how he is able to do what he does with it. Not just pace, power but technique he employs on it with consistency.

I guess to each his own. I don't like Djokovic or Feds tennis. Some of you like Djokovic or Feds tennis and not others. That's why we root for them. I respect that. I can see why someone would think Djo or Feds tennis is beautiful. To each his own.

that's right everyone has their own opinion. And in mine feds and noles game is more attractive to watch than nadals

Nice try. My post was a breath of fresh air, a refreshing breeze to counter the stench of the fanboys who pollute the boards with their mean-spirited cheerleading. Further your 'demean woman' comment is mere strawman rhetoric; now that stinks.

A Federer fan appreciating Nadal. That's very insipring and fresh.

As for the other Federer fanboys, the less said about them the better!

You know, how many Federer fans is that now that have made a long post about admiring Nadal? I respect Nadal's accomplishments too, don't get me wrong, but it would be nice if a Nadal fan returned the favour. However, I'm not holding my breath.

This whole thing is getting a bit old now. There are like 3 or 4 different threads on this.

I'll just settle for congratulating Nadal when he does something worthy of congratulations. I've already done that about his mind blowing accomplishments on clay, but I will not be typing him a 20 page love letter equivalent to the OP. That is just the way it is.

And on top of all that, we have another poster who was seemingly a Federer fan for the longest time who thinks that Nadal will be "GOAT" if he wins this Wimbledon even though he'll still be 2 slams short and that's assuming he wins Wimbledon which is a pretty big assumption these days.

Newsflash: Nadal has to AT LEAST tie the slam record to even be considered "better" than Federer.

Well said. Just because he wins a bunch of titles and the media is fawning over him there is no need for Federer fans to feel compelled to join the applause. I will develop admiration for Nadal the day humans develop a fondness for root canal.

Man excellent post

It's sad you've written such a nice post, and so much of this thread has been overrun by people who (apparently seriously) are calling you a traitor, or saying they don't need your praise. What an infuriatingly juvenile place this is. Such a shame more people don't seem to have the mental capacity to be a fan of one, and show respect to the other. It's funny seeing how well the two guys themselves get on, see how much mutual respect there is there, and then seeing people bickering like children over who is better.

Oh stop with the lovey dovey crap. If this was the only thread like this I wouldn't mind. Problem is there's like 4 of them. Enough of this already. Congratulations to Nadal on winning his 14th slam and being a freak on clay in general, but that is as far as it needs to go. Just because every Federer fan on the planet doesn't kiss Nadal's feet after he wins another clay slam doesn't mean they don't appreciate him. It just means it only needs to go so far, not completely over the top.

WHy do you reproach Nadal fans for not doing something you yourself aren't willing to do and don't like other Fed fans doing?.

If you read the kind of posts we're talking about, the posters have gone through a curve of near "hate" to appreciation. Due to the dynamics of the rivalry itself, Nadal fans have hardly gone though the same.

Regarding the OP, whine Nadal's talent gets played down, his attitude and fighting spirit is one of, if not the most impressive thing about him, so it's only natural people focus more on that.
Plus, I at least, love the uniqueness of his game.

Nadal's and Federer's contempt for each other is the elephant in the room that no one wants to talk about. Especially them.

Yeah, a lot of the Fedal "love" stems from the fact that both Federer and Nadal are Nike mules more than the fact that these two love and adore each other. I think they respect one another but I doubt they send each other Christmas cards.

Great post. One person is the epitome of the game, the other one ruins it.

Polar opposites.

hahaaa.....but while nadal ruins the game the authorities must take steps to stamp out the ugliness that he has brought to the game.he's doing a job for tennis but it wont effect his career, funny that.

My point is the number of these threads that have popped up in recent times is ridiculous tbh. 1 is fine. 3 or 4 are unnecessary.

Plus, I can say in 2 sentences basically what the OP said in 2 paragraphs and I already have in this thread. No need to fawn.
