Why I do not want Fed to win the FO!

As a RAFA fan, someday I want to see Rafa being talked about as the GOAT. Given Rafa's demanding style of play though, I don't realistically see him winning more than 12 slams! With 12 slams, the only way he could be talked about as GOAT, is if he did what Pete and Fed couldn't i.e. the career slam. That plus his winning H2H against Fed would be enough to merit Rafas consideration as GOAT.

If Fed wins the FO, he gets the career slam. As an objective person, I have to say that pretty much makes Fed GOAT( even though I would much rather Rafa or Pete have that honor!). Nadal would have to win 8 more slams to get into GOAT territory, which is a tall order to say the least.

To sum it up..

As a nadal fan, as opposed to a tennis fan, i hope that a player who's been on tour for almost 11 years does not achieve his greatest chance at history because it MAY prevent my favorite player from being the GOAT.

Why don't I start a thread called, "Why grand slams should be ended" because James has never won a slam, and all the people winning them are making him look bad. Would that be ok?

I can understand you reasoning.. I actually think it is quite fair. Just as I -as a Fed fan- want Federer to win this French Open and the coming Wimbledon, so he surpasses Pete Sampras. That way Federer has one of the strongest cases to be considered the GOAT.

Yes because somehow not liking your favorite player excludes me from being a tennis fan right?

I don't like Fed much. I have stated that before in many posts. So why should I have this whole objective view of 'history being created'. History was already created when Sampras won 14 slams.

P.S - Expected better from you DarthFed!

I disagree with the first part. IMO, it's hard to make an argument for being GOAT if you are two slams short of the tally even if you have a career slam and a winning HTH against a rival who put together 5 Wimbledons and 5 USO back-to-back and was your hottest competitor on your favorite surface.

Your second point is spot on and gracious. It's a tall order but if Nadal can hold up physically, he'll certainly give it a go. But I don't think he'll do it. Players are getting taller and stronger as always and he'll be the older guy soon enough. Maybe sooner than we think. But a phenomenal player and without doubt one of the best players the modern game has seen.

^^^ I do apologize because I'm unable to see what's written up here, because I installed this new software that blanks out posts from trolls.

I don't really understand why the OP gets all the hate. I bet a ton of fans feel this way and I don't want Rafa to win US Open because of this as well..

I just don't see the point of making a thread out of it as there are 25 GOAT topics on the first page.

I think it would be good for Tennis if any of the men in the draw win, if the other three win then it gives little guys hope that the slams wont be monopolized by Federer or Nadal or even Nole. If Federer wins the bar for excellence will rise, because i feel that it is Federer who made Nadal into the player he has evolved into by making him chase after him for 3 years. Nadal will have to win the USO to complete his career slam as well as earn more titles, then we would have two men pretty high up in the history books.

Yes but Sampras never won a career slam, if Fed does this he matches the record and is one of the few men this era with a career slam IF he wins

I would, but I'd be banned. I just don't see how Fed and Nadal fans get the right to make up all these ridiculous threads just with their idle thoughts. Pretty soon I expect to see a "what should Federer eat at the champions dinner-steak or shrimp?" thread.

I find your reasoning very egoistical but also very honest.A lot of posters here, mostly Sampras fans feel this way,but don't have the guts to admit it.

This thread is for children.

Yes, Nadal has better character, lions heart. Federer was choked a lot. But Federer played better tennis all the time, simply he plays better having worser endurance and more vulnerable character.

I'm not fan neither of Fed, no of Nadal, I'm fanatic of tennis. So it is fair if Fed wins FO and sums up, because he is stronger than Pete, Agassi, Borg and others. He must prove that he is GOAT.

Fair enough. It's only natural for Nadal fans who want to consider him as GOAT to not want Fed to win the FO. I won't ever consider Fed or anyone else GOAT because I don't think anyone deserves this honor - it's way too dramatic for a sport IMO. Nobody's perfect, therfore nobody's GOAT for me.

I will, however, consider Fed a very complete player, with winning all 4 majors. I think he has a chance to make history and I think it doesn't take anything away from Nadal.

lol at the *******s who bash the possibility of nadal being goat.

we will never know who the goat will be because it will be the greatest of ALL TIME. who knows...maybe 150 years from now there will be an incredible player that would have demolished federer. its impossible to tell and the GOAT discussion is pointless.

i wonder if tennis fans back in the day thought laver was the GOAT or even way back to the days of Bill Tilden

This makes no sense to me....Fed has worse endurance then Nadal? Fed doesn't fight or have a heart??? Fed choked a lot??

such a pointless thread. this whole "GOAT" debate is always going to be subject to conditions like era, peers, technology, etc and always be subjective in the end. But if you really think about it (know I'm asking a lot here), this so-called title that is desired by either Fed or Nadal or Sampras fans is just that, A Title, that really only means something to the fans themselves. I doubt Sampras goes to bed every night polishing the GOAT plaque he made for himself while performing voodoo hexes on his Fed and Rafa dolls in hopes that he can someday walk down the streets wearing his GOAT medal, unchallenged by the critics and fans. He's already amongst elite tennis company, and I'm sure his life won't change based on how well or poorly Fed or Nadal end their careers.

I guess in a way it is good that people are interested in the sport enough to voice such strong (albeit often ludicrous) claims like "I want this guy to win so that we can all say he's GOAT, or someone else to lose for the same reason" etc etc.

Look, Rafa has already accomplished historical feats. Isn't that good enough? His career isn't over to my knowledge. One loss in four years at RG? That's pretty badass IMO. The greatest current clay court player that also has a Wimby title, with a career grand slam within sight. Just cheer him on, enjoy the tennis, and let history take its course. He's still young, he's got time, just let it happen. If his career ends tomorrow he will always be considered among the greats already, I don't see how he would be dismissed even if something like that happened. To say, "someday I want to see him being talked about as the GOAT", is just ridiculous. I think he's already in elite company and I'm sure he sleeps great at night. He probably learned from his loss and will emerge even better. Who knows?

Remember your cheers will not affect history (unless you go to games and heckle players during points), so just be cool and keep that GOAT hope to yourself, or it just comes off like this thread: laughable.

I agree with the OP notion of not wanting Fed to win but FO but not because I want Nadal to. I simply am not a Fed fan and would prefer to see pretty much anyone but him win it.

I'm not a Fed fan either but I'm not a Soderling, Delpo or Gonzo fan either. Had this been a less significant tournament , I would actually want Fed to win!

i dont want Fed to win because i like variety and, man... does tennis need it!

not because it would overshadow my favourite player... that is simply poor!

I can understand why you feel the way you do. I mean of course any player that we like, you'd want the best for them. If you're a Nadal fan, you want to see Nadal do well, and if you're a Federer fan, for Federer to do well.

However I think that some of your reasoning over GOAT status is a bit off. Now you're saying that if Nadal were to complete the career slam, and Federer and Sampras didn't along with Nadal's winning record against Federer would then cause people to consider Nadal as the GOAT, and that is just plain wrong.

GOAT isn't solely based on one thing, and Nadal is still quite a few slams short of the people at the top of the list. There are many things to consider: dominance, records, achievements on all surfaces, etc. This is one of the reasons I disagree so much with Sampras being the GOAT, and it's more then just never winning the French Open.

Oh, I didn't mean Nadal right now. I said that he would need ATLEAST 12 slams. Laver has 11 slams and yet he is talked about as a GOAT candidate. If Fed had only 13 slams but 1 was a FO , then he would be GOAT Imho even though Sampras has 14.

Im trying to say that he cant accept the fact that Nadal is out, and support the next best thing.

So yeah, "kraggy" go finish 3rd grade then we'll talk.

But then I would be 2 grades ahead of you and you wouldn't understand a word of what I'm saying.

Why can't some of you Fed fans accept the fact that there are people who do not like Fed. period. I am fine if you do not like Nadal, why do you have a problem if I don't like Fed?

Hence if I don't like Fed, why would I want to see him create history, when it could quite possibly mean that my favorite player may never get a chance to do the same?!

I like Federer and Nadal is a close second favorite.

Hating one player is perfectly fine if he is the rival of your favorite player. But going on a rampage is not.

Please accept my apologies.

I don't want Fed to win because of his fanbase and he'll be even more arrogant in his interviews. He needs some more humility. It's good for him. ;)

No harm done and no need to apologize. Wasn't going on a rampage though, just being honest with my thoughts. I can see that you like both players but they are a number of people on this forum who either like Nadal or like Federer. I think that is fine as long as you are NOT

a) Mindlessly bashing the player you don't like
b) Wishing an injury to that player

Like some posters mentioned, they might not want to see Nadal ever win the USO. That's perfectly fine with me.

I'm quite fine with it.I doubt Fed fans would root for Nadal to break Borg's record at the FO this year if Fed went out early and Nadal was still in the tourney so I don't expect Nadal fans to do that either.I appreciate the honesty.

You are stupid. If you truly want *** picking boy to be GOAT then you should just wait to see if he gets it by himself instead of wishing for something that may or may not come. If Fed gets FO, it should not affect how Nadal plays his tennis because it your mind he's GOAT. Unless, what you are telling us is that you are an idiot and you only want Nadal as GOAT because he's your favorite but he actually hasn't accomplish that same standards as other GOAT candidates.

I think the term GOAT is pretty stupid and was originated by morons who have too much time to kill. So why not just watch the semi and see how it goes then see who win the final. If Fed wins, then it's good for him because he played well enough to put himself in that position to win. Had your boy Nadal managed to play well he would have a chance to be in the final and win against who is there too. But he didn't. Can he be GOAT? I mean look at 20 semi streak, 10 final streak, etc. I don't think Nadal can ever do that. You have to play consistent tennis to accomplish that, that means even on your off day and your opponent's best days. Nadal couldn't get pass round 4 at the FO on a surface that he was supposed to be so invincible. So much for that theory.

Do you in your heart truly believe Nadal is a GOAT candidate for GOAT then? Hey, only you can answer that. I personally don't care much for the GOAT.

Somehow, I don't think Nadal can win the US Open unless really USTA plans to really slow down the surface. If the surface remain the same, I am highly doubtful that Nadal can win the USOpen.

I know I can be wrong but I am willing to make those bets and believe the odds are in my favor during the next 5 years. After that, Nadal is too old to win major easily, let alone the US Open. Nadal's joints will not allow him to play the same tennis as he is playing now.

threads like this embarrass me a little. The best case scenario for any slam these days is to have Fed and Rafa in the final but when that does not happen you cannot hate on the other. I am a Fed fan but I also respect Nadal greatly. As a Nadal fan you should just want Soderling to get his *** handed to him. But then again I just feel bad for him because he is a man and his first name is Robin.

Excellent post. The GOAT theory has to be the most ridiculous issue going in tennis. Going across eras, claiming one's GOATNESS prematurely. Thinking someone else won't make it? I don't get it either.

Enjoy the tennis. Support your player and be done with it.
