Why I want Nadal to win USO 2013 - A Roger fan's take

  • Thread starter Thread starter nikdom

Nadal's recent form
Simply - he's been the best hardcourt player coming into the USO. Nadal has been showing us some nice aggressive shot making combined with his usual defensive skills and mental fortitude. Steve Tignor made a very astute comment about Nadal the other day. He writes, "In tight moments, Nadal is the rare player who can find the right balance of aggression and margin".

The USO rewards obviously the most aggressive players, but over 5 sets, low percentage shot making won't cut it. Rafa's gears give him the ability to shift up when needed yet his trademark top-spin game gives him plenty of room.

Federer
Now to the part about being a Fed fan and why this is a departure for me. It isn't like I don't want Roger to win. That's always a Federer fan's *wish*. But that can only happen if Roger is in good form and playing well. And to be honest, I don't enjoy Roger winning ugly. His game was made to flourish and for us fans to enjoy that free-floating, creative genius in full flow.

This hasn't been his summer or even year. I'm hoping by the fall indoor season he finds his mojo again, but right now we'll have to see. I'd be very pleasantly surprised if he does get through 2 of the Top 4 to win the USO.

The Rest
As for Djokovic or Murray, my personal preference is aggressive, creative players and surprisingly Nadal is the one out of those 3 that can do it and take it up a notch. Murray and Djokovic have been lackluster but we'll have to see how things go.

JMDP, Berdych and other dark horses unfortunately haven't proven themselves coming into the open. It'll take a great performance by someone to upset the Top 4 to corner yet another slam.

GOAT Challenge
Some of you may be wondering why a Fed fan would wish his nemesis in the slam race pick up another slam and narrow the GS title gap. I'm supposed to wish that Nadal not win another slam ever again and Federer always remain the slam king.

The truth is we don't know what is going to happen. Fed may not win a slam again and Nadal could catch up, or not. Fed could add 1 or more slams still and make it more difficult.

All the numbers aside, I've come to a point where philosophically I think it is immature to desire Nadal somehow fall off the radar. Let the guy play and let the better man come out on top in the history books. If it is Nadal, so be it - it isn't like he's going to do it by winning some lottery. He'll have to win it just like Roger did.

I've come to realize that although I'm not a Nadal fan, I despise his juvenile fans more than the tennis player himself. If I ignore all the antics and just focus on his tennis shot making between the lines, he's a phenomenal player who will go down as one of the Top 5 best male players of all time even if he doesn't win one more title ever!

So to ignore all that good and just focus on the negative aspects I don't like is not right. I still wish and hope Roger remains the champ in the GS department, but not going to do it by rooting against Nadal.
This is actually a good post.

Now to ask myself whether I'd still feel that way if the names were reversed.

Yeah, this is still a good post.

it is fine to disagree with him. but to claim that he is putting himself on some higher moral pedestal etc etc when the author clearly ISN'T... now i find that problematic. furthermore i would have found this behavior less problematic if the anger towards the OP is because he wished federer would not win, rather than he wished nadal would win. do you see the difference? why is everything about nadal vs federer? why must nadal and his fans be so completely demonized?

Because the OP (as a Federer fan) "cleary" stated his "aversion" to Federer winning (because of his inability to replicate the "pretty" tennis form of his prime). This the source of most of vitriol in this thread directed against the OP. I have already stated as much in an earlier post of mine.

Wow this thread is such an epic fail, epic actually isn't enough to describe it,maybe more embarassing is the operative word here....nikdom, dude the haters have really got under your skin it seems, maybe you should just switch fanbases or just straight up quit TW..heck why don't you just take up to sainthood? It's said that saints are at peace like 24/7.
You get to be at peace and we don't have to read your crappy threads, sounds like a win-win situation for both, don't you agree?

And here I was thinking of making a thread asking Fed fans to come up with a strategy for Fed to beat ****** if they square off in the QF. *sigh*
Maybe I should go ahead with my idea since there are still plenty of geniune Fed fans on TW thankfully.

Is that a veiled way of saying I should go die or something? :)

Sorry man, I'm not here to please you. Accept the fact that people have opinions different than yours.

I thought you said yesterday that you thought Nadal wasn't a bad guy, and you wouldn't mind having a beer with him?

What I really meant to say was having a beer with Ralph meant indirectly hooking up with some hot spanish chik. To get something one has to sacrifice something.

Not sure why anyone would feel that way. One thing to be neutral quite another to actively root for someone you've basically never rooted for. Whatever. Couldn't relate to a word of that post. I also don't see Nadal being supremely aggressive. He goes into his defensive shell the moment he finds a player who's attacking more than him, which quite frankly, he doesn't do a whole lot.

He was against Djokovic at both Roland Garros and at Montreal.

Crazy tennis from Nadal at times.

excuse me. you were the one who replied to my reply to Monfed's post. you intercepted the discourse. HOW DARE YOU claim i was replying to your posts? what blatant lies!

Here you go drama queen:

My post:

He "represented himself as a "Federer fan". Ergo other Federer fans have the right to call him out on his statement that as a Federer fan he wants Nadal to win. It's like someone saying: "As a Red Sox fan, I want the Yankees to win" or vice versa. Or to take it even further "As an American, I want Al-Qaeda to win".

Furthermore, when you post in a public forum, you open yourself up to criticism, mockery, and derision, as well as to praise and agreement, as seen in the various responses in this and other threads. Don't want your opinion to be analyzed and criticized? Then keep it to yourself.

Your Reply:

Hmm I guess after 10 beers down it's not that hard to like Nadal huh , but I have to laud your ability to write coherently in your inebriated state.

THAT, was originally my reply to Monfed's post, and you intercepted it. I wasn't talking about YOUR posts at all. i was talking about Monfed's posts ALL ALONG. do you get it???!!

This is hilarious. Are YOU a tad addled in the head perchance? If THAT was your reply to monfed, why "quote" MY post at all.

Exactly! Lol he's soooo sensitive and wants everyone to worship Federer 24/7. I don't get it. I'm shocked he still has a butt, it's been on fire so long

I share most of OP's views although I am less zen-like about the unsportsmanlike aspect of Nadal's game on court.

About the rivalry I can see Nadal is catching up but I don't think he can get to 17 or even 16. Nadal's 2010 goating was stopped by Nole's goating in 2011. Nadal might be Goating again in 2013 if he wins USO but chances are he will be stopped by someone else soon. Fed's multi year Goating from 2004 to 07 was only made to look easy because of Fed. It is actually very very difficult to pull off.

Intercepted? I didn't realize you and monfed were having a tete-a-tete on a public forum - besides which you immediately replied back therefore initiating a conversation with me from thereonin. QED.

Djokovic has turned into a defensive counter-puncher this year. Not the best yardstick.

He was aggressive against Del Potro at IW, against Fed at Cinci, against Ferrer even way back in Acapulco.

You just can't give Rafa any credit for anything because you're a blind federina.

Ok we get it, you love everything about him including his wife, but ffs if another fed fan decides that he's cool with Rafa winning a major why does that bother you to the point where you need to start spouting crap on here?

I guess I don't understand why being a Roger fan precludes me from appreciating Nadal. There was a time when they were No.1 and 2, and Roger was winning practically every slam and Nadal was his only speedbreaker. It made sense then that if you were rooting for Federer, you were against Nadal.

Now, it's not like if Nadal is absent Roger somehow becomes a favorite...

I have no doubt Roger, if he finds his form, is and will always be a slam contender (unlike what many think).

It's just practical, we want Roger to win, but not to be handed trophy's without earning them. If someone is better, let him win, FCS.

Agree with this sentiment. As an objective Nadal fan, I want Nadal to earn his USO this year after his first one was literally gifted to him. Unfortunately, it will be the same this year, with him having a bye all the way to the final, playing only his pigeons. In the final, he will run over a very tired Delpo/Murray/Djoker in straights. So, it is a done deal that Nadal wins this USO but people will continue saying Nadal was handed the trophy and didn't have to earn it

I would insult you if you weren't doing such a good job of it yourself.

Have fun buddy.

BRILLIANT!

I know. I wish everyone would learn the art of saying the same thing in a more veiled manner like this below :

Are you kidding me? Did I say I wanted him to disappear from the face of the earth? Did I say I want him to tear his acl and retire from tennis? No, I didn't so I hardly think my comment is anywhere near the realm of what Zam88 said. You are ridiculous, dude.

You said 'falls' off the face of the earth. If you fall off, you go away, no? Pretty much the same as disappear from the face of the earth. Talk about ridiculous.

You appear very conflicted. You appreciate Nadal and praise him highly because you're a huge fan.:)

Ok, so I'm a fan of both. So?

Why don't you try admitting your Sampras-****ness is the only reason you support Nadal?

That's fair enough. I'm not a fed fan, but it would seen bad form to actively wish your favourite player's rivals would lose.

good, you're being honest with yourself now. :)

Speaking of being honest, I for one really wish Nadal loses as soon as possible and takes least couple of years off.

I am a huge fan of Nadal as well. He is my most favorite player of all time to enjoy watching lose. That's why I want his loss to come as soon as possible and be as spectacular as possible.

are you totally honest here ?
i mean... would a couple of years off be really enough ?

He did ALL KINDSSSS of numbers on you guys when it comes to Federer huh? :) May his success keep you in stitches.

I'm not sure if you're familiar with this quote from Carl Sagan:

"Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence"

There is nothing wrong with being skeptical, in fact it's part of the human psyche. It's just that some people tend to be very selective how they apply their skepticism.

The extraordinary claim here is that he was out for almost 8 months for any reason other than a serious injury.

well I've only scanned some of the posts but I'm a huge Murray fan but I hope an unbiased one when it comes to this debate. Obviously I want Roger to beat Rafa in the Qs if they get there for Murray's sake but I actually want Fed to beat him anyway.

He's a great player and deserves it. Rafa is not better than Roger .Roger is not better than Rafa. The two greats of the era. So Roger take him down and then Murray can take the title ;-)

Why is this guy talking like Djokovic does not exists at all?

OP was on my blocked list so I'm sure at some point and time he said some horrible things against Rafa. That being said, it's really funny Nikdom, you talk about how "juvenile" Nadal fans are, what stands out in this thread is the hatred from your fellow Fed fans. They judge you as if they have the right to decide what a "true" fan is. It is clear to me that you wish for Fed to win but if that can't happen then Nadal should win. I feel bad for many Fed fans in a way, they are surrounded by a snobby lot who tend to believe they are more refined in their tennis taste than fans of Rafa. In any case, Rafa thanks you for your support.

The OP is clearly suffering from the Stockholm syndrome.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stockholm_syndrome (butthurt is a mild form of this)

LOL. At one time, OP made awesome threads like this.
Looks like he has since been slowly moving over to the dark side as was evident in this recent thread:twisted:

I think the OP is just trying to reconcile with the inevitable. He knows that Nadal is winning the USO this year and there is nothing anyone can do about it, so might as well tell yourself that you want him to win it :).

He also has a thread from back in 2009 declaring that he is done rooting for Federer.

Darn it Nikdom, make up your mind! :)
