Why is Alcaraz the bookies favourite for the French Open?

7 clay titles to 1 might be one reason. 11 wins apiece at Roland Garros prior to this year when Sinner has played 4 Roland Garros and Alcaraz has played 3 might be another. I could be wrong, but I've never gotten the impression that bookies odds are determined by the eye test...

Sinner is the World Number 1 and close to unbeatable at the moment. Why is Alcaraz favourite and not Sinner?
Surface matters.

Lendl was a dominant #1 player for 3-4 years and never was the favorite at Wimbledon.

Fed was a dominant #1 player for years yet was never the favorite at RG except in 2009 after Rafa lost.

Alcaraz has the superior movement on clay and far more variety, that's why he's the favorite. Sinner may beat him, then he'll be the overwhelming favorite in the final.

What are the odds on that? 75-1? Is he good on grass? I don't remember seeing any good grass results
Only one man has won the CYGS in the last 55 years and only Djoker came close to replicating it. The odds are astronomical it won't be done this year, especially from a guy who has won one slam in his career.

While Sinner has VASTLY improved on clay, even he keeps admiring he has struggled in the past on this surface most. And Alcz is a clay courter for sure. Just a nick more advantage in that alone.

Based on their past clay accomplishments, Alcaraz should be favored at this stage. But honestly, I wouldn't be suprised to see Sinner beat Alcaraz. To me, it's a coinflip at this stage. Sinner has improved so much during the past 9 months or so, that it's made him incredibly dominant: 33-2 record in 2024 and 52-4 since the US Open last year. That is one hell of a run. Will his insane dominance translate to clay? We don't know for sure just yet. But it's getting tougher to bet against this cat. I'm undecided now. Alcaraz better hold up his end of the bargain by making the semis. This is the on match that I've really been looking forward to all tournament. It's been a great tournament so far. But this match would put it over the top.

Everyone saying he is better than Sinner on clay. I would argue that clay is Alcaraz worst surface now.
Remains to be seen if Wimbledon was a fluke or not.

It's hard to believe grass is actually a better surface for him than clay, but he definitely has something to prove here in Paris.

Well, Sinner was unbeatable the last time Alcaraz beat him.

And this is on clay, which may favor Alcaraz.

So I think it's reasonable for bookies to put Alcaraz at better odds.

They're concerned about getting the odds right and making money in the moment more than calculating yearly ATP points.

That USO loss to Meddy was.. odd.

Sinner can become the first male player in the Open Era, at least, to win his second Major title immediately after winning the first.
Or Alcaraz can become the youngest tennis player to win Majors on three surfaces at just 21 years old, which would surpass the precocity of his compatriot Nadal, who achieved it when he was over 22 years old.
Either of the two could write an important page in the history of tennis.

Nadal might remain the youngest career grand slam achiever even assuming Alcaraz wins this tournament, would need to double-down on efforts Down Under.
