why is djokovic playing alcapulco

Agree with everyone here about it being a mixture of factors. He is hoping to gain confidence by playing well and either beating Nadal or advancing further than him. Djokovic is HORRIBLE against Fed in Bo3 matches so best to avoid Fed at this point in time. And Acapulco tournament is offering Djokovic MASSIVE money and also really impressive hospitality to stay at the tournament, which has appeased his wife.

Djokovic has RARELY played in Latin America. It is actually quite interesting to see him there. I'm not particularly interested in him doing well but fascinated to see how he copes with the unfamiliar conditions while also not starting the year very well at all.

Yes, probably this. His H2H with those monsters is only 68-38 so dodging them out was his only option here...

He knows he will not win Dubai, yet is a chance in Latin America. That's more what his thought process would be imo.

No one except Wawrinka, Murray, and Federer were factors. He could probably handle Wawrinka and Murray in the final if he needed to. The only one he'd worry about would be Federer, who would be one possible opponent, much like Nadal. Seriously, Djokovic didn't dodge opponents- it's for the easier acclimation to IW, both in style of play and in climate.

regain confidence, and it is much closer to Indian Wells, so he can practice on courts there quicker than dubai courts.

does anyone know the story?
hes been playing dubai every year since 2007? was he scheduled to play this year? do you think he might be ducking federer because hes feeling vulnerable & doesn't want to play him on a fast court?

He was demanding a big pay from Dubai, but he was denied because they paid Feddy Big Time already. So, Djoker said, screw you. I'll play in Mehixo.......:D

By the crowd reactions today, against Delpo, he will be returning to Mexico for sure next year. The crowd went absolutely crazy over him. Never seen that sort of crowd support for Djokovic.

He wants to crack Nadal yet again and win the golden pear
Nadal was a BIG reason for him to play Mexico. For sure. IF they meet in a final, and he beats Nadal, it will be a major confidence booth. More so than beating Federer or Murray.

Even Toni Nadal said last month, that Djokovic is still the person to beat. Nadal, in Djokovic's mind, is still the person to beat.

Why is djokovic playing alcapulco?

Because Nadal is. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Djokovic is loved everywhere he goes, its a different matter whether they support a different player more or not but he sure has fans everywhere.

Changing the schedule, visiting new places, and probably got a nice appearance fee.

Murray has never been a big problem for Djokovic (honestly nobody has been). As for the other two,

Cheerio

Outside of the Slams, they are 6-6 in finals played so Murray has always been a bit of a problem for Djokovic at least in the lesser tournaments.

Someone made the point that he was upset by the Dubai crowd booing him off court last year when he had to retire with an eye problem. He also avoided Madrid for several years after the crowd cheered a bit too much when he lost to Dimitrov there in 2013.

Dubai, like Madrid before it, may not be his favourite tournament right now and that plus the more enthusiastic Mexican crowds might ensure that it will get the Madrid treatment for the next few years!

Just imagine if Nadal had avoided RG because they cheered too much when he lost to Sod. It's kind of childish. Djoko owes Dubai one. They gave his brother, Marco, a WC when he was ranked #869, over Jaziri, the Arab #1 at the time, who had been promised the WC but had to play the QR and lost.

"Nadal was a big reason........."? Fat lot of good that did Djokovic, because Nadal is still standing and he is on his way back to his tax-free haven. Toni is right, Djokovic is still the person to beat, ;) and he has been beaten in straight sets. :) :) ;) ;)

Nadal would not od stood a chance against Kyrgios today. Don't fool yourself.

I don't engage in what might or might not have been. If you go along those lines, then had Kyrgios met Novak in the 4th round at Wimbledon in 2014 instead of Nadal, Novak would have lost to him and he would now have 11 slams instead of 12.

That is true. And if Nadal had not used so much shampoo, and cut his hair when he was younger, he might have some hair left.

So Federer is not allow to lose despites have an excellent career results at Dubai?

Anyway, the loss means Nole made a mistake for withdrawing Dubai which is a more prestigious ATP500 than Alcapulco.

Dubai was a bit of a farce last year and now this year nearly all the top seeds fell out quickly.

Meanwhile, Acapulco has moved from a lesser 500 to one of the better ones in recent memory. With enthusiastic, polite, and sold out crowds they have a very bright future ahead of them. And the logic of the time zone and courts as warmup for IW is strong. The players at Brisbane this year did markedly better at Auz then the Doha players. We'll see how things go at IW, but Acapulco was very popular with the players. Shame that Zverev had to drop. The top half of Acapulco was loaded this year.:p

That's how his journey ended (half-a-minute press confrence):
