Why is it so hard to find (affordable quality) White shorts and underwear?

I'm on a quest to find the perfect tennis shorts in White color. I figure to go along with the shorts, I should get some white underwear....prefer boxer brief style.

My absolute favorite shorts for tennis are the Champion MVP shorts, but they aren't available in white. They fit great and they don't break the bank. This is my baseline of what tennis shorts should be.

I tried some Baleaf (prime day deal) ones in white and they were see through. They got returned, as the quality is not what I expected. I've seen some other brands in store, but could see my hand through them, so no point in even trying them on.

I've read a couple of positive reviews on Lotto "Tech" and "Top Ten" that made me think I'd give them a try, but they are see through on the model on the website!

I ordered a pair of Nike Advantage shorts in Large, which is what I wear in every other brand. On the bright side, they aren't see through and they have good stretch. The downside is that they feel like I'm wearing tights. I have another pair coming in XL to see if they fit better. I also ordered white underwear to go with them....only they sent me a multi-pack of grey and black. Their customer service rep apologized, sent me a return label and placed another order for white underwear....only to send me the same multi-pack. Next rep essentially said too bad and has issued a return label after being unable to find another set in white.

So why is it so hard to find quality clothing in white that won't break the bank?

Any other recommendations that I should consider? I'd like to keep them under $30 if at all possible. Considering I can usually find the Champion ones that I like for under $20, it seems reasonable that I could find some suitable white shorts for under $30.

I do think your price range is probably out of touch with the market msrp and even discount shorts worth owning. I got the Rafa adv shorts in white for $40 on Memorial Day and that felt like a steal. They’re not even that great, super thin and the offset pockets suck. I would think going for some generalized stuff would be cheaper / more feasible solution

If you want white shorts and white underwear, why not just get white 2-in-1 shorts?

The 2&1 concept is underrated. I’m shocked you’re one of the only ones banging the drum around here. It makes a lot of sense. I spend $10/pair on Nike briefs and $20 a pair on tights. Integrating them is economical and practical

Thank you bro. And yeah I don't see anyone wearing them at the courts and all my friends think they're stupid. I don't get it. I got one pair and it was a total game changer, now I have like 20 pairs

My one buddy is out there in flannel boxers in the summer. Dude.....

Even pros neglect this. I saw Marin Cilic wearing thin white shorts with black tighty-whities underneath, looked very unsightly for one and not comfortable either

It’s pathetic to me that any grown ass man would show up to a tennis court with flannel boxers on. I think that’s the type of decision that could end up in major chafing issues along with side eye from any and all people.

Regardless the Nike 2/1 idea is sensible given how they price their undergarments (which i honestly love so will pay a premium for tights/ briefs). If that doesn’t matter as much to a Nike fan, the 2/1 way more sensible

Aren’t they by definition NOT a tighty whitey if they are black?

He's that guy who shows up to the court carrying his racquet in a cardboard box, no water on a 90 degree day, still beats me 0/1 lol

I'm a decent player but I feel like a total poser when I play with this dude in my nice dri-fit stuff and he's literally out there in golf shorts with flannel boxers mushrooming out the top lol

The Champion shorts I typically wear are soft, stretchy, and comfortable. They are the gold standard where cost, comfort and performance blend perfectly and show that "name brand" apparel is over priced.

I'm willing to pay more for quality. The price range is not a hard ceiling, but rather an ideal cap. Market MSRP is total crap. The price will continue to rise as long as people are willing to fork out the cash. $80 for a pair of shorts is ludacris.

If you want white shorts and white underwear, why not just get white 2-in-1 shorts?

I'm not opposed to 2-in-1 shorts. Got a good link?

Could be like Coke or Advil. All Coke is a coke...even if it's made by Pepsi. All ibuprofen is Advil...even if it is just store brand.

White shows too much. Jockey makes some light gray ones that pretty much disappear even when under shorts that have become pretty translucent when sweaty.....

I have a broad search for "Nike 2 in 1 shorts" and then more specific ones with item numbers that I've noticed along the way

Because white shorts were made in better and more privileged circumstances that shorts of other colors. Shorts with other colors had to work harder to get the consumer's attention while white shorts had a bigger head start and owned slaves.

I saw you replied to this thread and I fully expected a recommendation. I wasn't expecting to know which presidential candidate my shorts would choose. For the record, I don't own any black shorts (yet).

Yeah exactly

One item to pack, one item to wear, one item to wash

Also, when I buy compression shorts in my size, the waistbands tend to be uncomfortably tight and can cause (male) circulation issues if I wear them too long. So I have to buy Mediums to be really comfortable, but when I buy the 2-in-1 I can do S or even XS with total comfort. Another reason to go that route

Exactly yup. I’ve never owned a pair so will defer to rosstour on the mechanics of said commando setup

I’m kind of flabbergasted that so many guys don’t wear these exclusively, let alone know what they are! It’s all I have for tennis, and assumed everyone else did too.

Tons of quality brands make great 2-in-1s and they’re basically built like swimsuits but for sport. There are some with brief liners so all you see is the outer short (ie nobody knows you’ve got 2-in-1s on) and others have longer mid-thigh-length liners (think boxer briefs inside) and regular 7” inseam shorts.

I have like 5 new balance pairs, 2 Nikes, and a Vuori. The Vuori (Kore Elevate) is the best-made one, but the NB are the lightest and best for tennis for me.

The Champion MVP shorts comes in a 2 in 1 option. Shorts with compression lining. It’s on their website

I have a pair, but they don't offer them in White.

I found a pair of Adidas 2-in-1 shorts in white. They came to $50 shipped. More than I want to spend, but I'm hopeful that they will work. In the end, it's cheaper than buying white shorts and white underwear separately.

The other pair of Nike that I'm waiting on hasn't even shipped yet. I'm kind of hoping the Adidas arrive before the Nike even ships so that I can cancel that order. I'm a little disappointed in Nike customer service at this point. It's atrocious.

We like to keep that area as cool as possible

1. No worse, if anything a little less hot because you've only got one waistband. But I'm comparing it to wearing compression shorts and not tightie whities

2. "Whitest whites" with a little bleach

2-in-1 airflow: there isn't much. Use Johnson's baby powder on the boys for moisture/heat/chafing protection!
Socks: I wear white ankle socks, so very little of it shows; even if it loses its shine, nobody sees it.
Shoes: Spray them with Scotchguard (3M) when you buy them. Let them dry, then play. Every time they get a scuff or some dirt, it wipes off clean with a clorox wipe because of a thin layer of protection guarding the white uppers.

1. Not much airflow, compared to what?

Also, Johnson's is carcinogenic. Use Burt's Bees instead

I dunno, I guess compared to going commando or those weirdos who still wear regular boxers under their shorts?

I’ve been boxer-briefs for my underwear for a decade-plus now, and nothing else will do. NB 2-in-1s are just that plus a nice light tennis short over it.

airflow is comparable to boxer briefs. it could be better, but the boys don't complain.

What is the benefit of crew socks? Especially in hot weather, I want as little fabric gripping my shins as possible. Talk about air flow - let those ankles breathe!

I ditched crew socks in my early 20s. I used to wear ankle socks until I rubbed through my Achilles tendon. The crew socks don't move as much and therefore allow me to play longer. I bought a pack of crew socks specifically for playing Tennis and have never looked back.

The Nike shorts I ordered in July have STILL not arrived....or even shipped. Nike says they can't cancel the order either.

Adidas, on the other hand, seems to have come through for me. The Adidas Men's London 2-in-1 shorts. The pockets are kind of thin feeling on the outside of the shorts. You can absolutely see anything in them from the outside. However, the shorts themselves are stretchy and not see through. The pockets are sewn in, so they won't be sticking out after pulling out balls.

Used to wear champion red and black. Then the big box store I bought them from changed to Starter. I bought all 5 colors including white. Must have been 10 years ago and they still look like new. Deep pockets and knee length. Perfect for tennis, badminton, BBall, etc. Under $10 at the time. Don't see them anymore, now I think they carry Athletic brand. Very similar but don't know if they come in white. I did buy some Athletic brand shirts and they are good quality, under $10.

Great quality as theyre a few years old and in amazing shape.

I also usually only wear white shorts. I have both Prince and Adidas white shorts. I like the Adidas Ergo shorts alot and got 3 or 4 pairs on a 50% sale about a year ago.

Adidas London 2-in-1 for the win. Got to wear them for about 2 hours of play last night. They check all the boxes. Not once did I think about my shorts while I was playing.

I feel like white next to black is the most common color for tennis shorts? Should be pretty easy to find options, kinda on you if you don't like a pair. I personally like Adidas either the Ergo (modern style with a lot of stretch but still a comfortable fit, doesn't feel tight) or Core Club (basic, traditional shorts, feels a little baggy and lacks stretch but comfortable and performs well). I like the Nike Advantage line but they do run a bit tight which I can def really feel if I eat like the crap the night before lol.

I also like Lululemon's pace breaker shorts, but those are pricy and also skew towards a tight fit.

I can never be physically co-ordinated enough to wear white pants.

It looks so good, but I would literally do anything in public like graze past some plant in a park, sit on something in the mall, drop BBQ sauce on it, or anything of this "sort", and everything is ruined! It is so obvious visually compared to literally ANY other color! :-D

After a few of these clumsy experiences with my white pants that were for golfing, I finally just admitted that I am simply unfit to wear white, despite how good I think it looks, and have ceased to buy new white apparel (socks, shoes, and boxers are fine) unless the quality is supremely impressive, which isn't often. Even then, I try to avoid it.

I also don't buy anything black either because it sucks when it is too sunny out, so now I am stuck with only the primary/secondary colors (YORPBG) in between. If I need something formal, I will do gray or navy. Gray is less obvious when stained and navy also absorbs too much sunlight but not as much as black.

How many pairs of white pants do you use? "Always on the hunt" makes it sound like you have a giant rotation of them! A whole line-up of different shapes, fits, and materials mate.
