Why is Nadal playing so much doubles if he is tired?

That's well and good. Whatever those goals and ideas are, you have to admit they are hard to decifer. The decisions and comments he made this week were perplexing.

I agree. The decisions have been hard to decipher, but sometimes people do things that appear strange and when you get their side of the story it makes sense. To me, he made a lot of strange decisions this year, but it resulted in his best year ever. Go figure?

Why does Nadal even practice if he is tired? Obviously, some of you haven't played doubles. It is not taxing at all. Similar to practice.

Ok it's a given you like lickin" Rafa's straps but to say doubles isn't taxing? This is a pro match not some leisure match up at the park. And for somebody who barely plays tennis and unathletic, your opinions about playing tennis won't go far.

With the new scoring system for doubles the average doubles match lasts around 1 hr. and is less taxing than the average practice session--after all you only serve every 4th game and return 1/2 the time. In a facility like Bercy, where the Paris Indoors are being played, the practice courts are off-site and therefore are different than the 2 match courts. Playing doubles on the match courts as a subsititute for practicing off-site makes perfect sense.

If so i can understand his situation better he was going for broke either have the practice and be more worn out or no practice and play like crap, call me selfish but i want him to play at full potential and curn out rather than play very poorly and boring

Dude you cover much less ground in doubles. Doubles is more reliant on reflexes and ball striking than effort. Rarely do have to go on a full sprint in doubles. Singles is exhausting though unless you are well prepared and fit.

I think doubles is awesome be it practice or hardcore i wish the atp would cover more on that instead of bias singles, Nadal does played doubles because he simply wanted to who are we to question him and if he wants to pull out becoz he is tired so be it the more he pulls out the more points hes gonna lose so i dont what you hardcore maniacs are on about give the guy a break and let him play HIS career the way he wants

But it's not taxing AT ALL? I PLAY tennis so I don't need explanation, especially from you. Freak you are becoming more and more of an idiot each and single time.

My question is why is Nadal playing doubles at all? He's a baseline basher! I haven't really seen him volley at all, so if he covers short, does he run back to cover deep while his teammate who served runs to cover short?

He actually volleys better than a lot of the top 10 players, and he is a decent doubles player. But his heavy topspin makes it a lot easier to hit a passing shot against him in singles. As for why he plays doubles, he says it helps him get his rhythm for singles (a la John McEnroe). But with the shape his knees are in, the less time on the court the better, I would think.

It is obvious **YOU** have no clue what you are talking about. Doubles can be very taxing, with all the serve and volley/chip and charge tennis. Your feet cannot stop moving, and you have to be extremely fast for the exchanges at the net.

Additionally, practice is **WAY** more "tiring/taxing" than a match. The two don't even compare.

Lastly, you should see Nadal practice some time. The guy is an absolute animal on the practice courts, more-so than in matches, because unlike matches where you have a break between points/games/sets>>> it is non-stop.

It is a professional sport. You are required to be in shape. Do you see fat ass 300 lb men winning doubles GS? NO.

I believe it was last year. When Toni Nadal announced Rafa's knee's condition (risk of ending his career), Rafa immediately denied Toni's comment. It was a bit strange incident I remembered. Rafa seemed to be living in denial. Finally he realized that he had to make his priority straight - take care of his knee!

And now he's playing Rotterdam right after an exhausting Australian Open, will go on to play Dubai, IW, Miami before the ever exhausting clay court stretch where of course he has to play in Barca, before competing in Queen's and Wimby...

He plays so much because Uncle Toni will beat him if he doesn't.

Also if he hits a forehand down the line against Federer.
