Since when is the crowd void of any criticism.

US Open 2015 final, the crowd was abysmal. Why should they deserve respect ? Because they payed ? Not in my book.

And yet again -- you land at the Beijing or Shanghai airport and not a single picture of Nadal (or Federer) there and Novak's pictures all over the place. I wonder why?

He's paying them to put his posters up; he's even trying to learn Chinese and he is also the reigning champion.

    I see several reasons:

    1) RAFA has more exciting game. His unique style amazes a lot of people. Forehand technique is so nice and aesthetic to watch. No one played like RAFA. And, probably, never will. Djokovic is too robotic and ordinary. He mastered all shots, but didn't put any of them to the highest level. As someone said, Djokovic is good at everything, great at nothing.

    2) RAFA is the better human. His attitude and manners show what a nice guy he is. GOATdal is a role model for kids. Djokovic, at the same time, is a fake. People don't love him, though he tries so much to be appreciated.

    3) RAFA is more attractive. Yeah, this is also important. Girls prefer RAFA rather than Djokovic.

There are pictures of Kim Il-Sung all over North Korea but that doesn't mean he is popular with the people.

Rafael Nadal, 30, has been dubbed “the Sexiest Tennis player Alive” by Glamour's magazine in its October 2016 issue out this week.

UPDATE 06/10/2016 : This story seems to be false. (read more)

For the second year in a row 2015 and 2016

The magazine has released its annual list of the 100 men who made history hotter, and the honors go to exactly who you thought they would (if you keep up with celebrity news): Rafael Nadal. For the second year in a row, our gorgeous hottie beat out some other equally hot men for the number one spot! And we can't say we disagree!

    Twitter Frenzy

Within minutes of Rafael Nadal being announced as this year’s winner, it had become the top trending topic on Twitter:

He is unquestionably handsome, he’s been smartly building his career on more than his looks,” wrote one fan.“#Rafael Nadal being named THE Sexiest Man Alive makes his girlfriend the luckiest Woman Alive?” joked another one.

The major upside of the award is that the Spanish tennis player will be getting plenty of press for the next few weeks. So what do you say? Do you think Rafael Nadal is the Sexiest Tennis player Alive? And if not, who gets your vote?

Nadal ranks among People's 2015 Sexiest Men Alive

David Beckham topped the list, but Nadal made the prestigious cut. (AP Photo)

Rafael Nadal didn't lay claim much on the ATP World Tour this season, at least not in keeping with his usual brilliant standards. He did finish the season No. 5, though he suffered poor clay-season and major results. It's unfortunate for him that the long-standing memory of his 2015 season may be his steamy ad campaign for Tommy Hilfiger's underwear line.

I'd like a poll on that one too, but just the ladies - there are way too many Nole fans with mancrushes. In my book, they are both nothing to write home about, especially Nole with the long face, funny ears and facial expressions. Although to be fair, Nadal has aged horribly. He literally looks ten years older than his age. Would be a close one I guess :)

What made Nadal so popular is that he was the only person who posed a credible challange to the greatest player of all time.
This meant whenever he stepped on court there was an aura of something special about him... people talked about him and his unique playstyle based on violence rather than natural flair and never say die attitude.

Djokovic unfortunately despite seeming like a very nice person just isnt very exciting and when he tries to be it seems like he's trying to hard.
    Decent player though.

And again...your opinion is based on...CNN source...

Since I spend about 50% of my time between Asia and TX, I can clearly say that yes, Novak is generally more popular in Asia than Nadal (probably/possibly not in all parts of Asia, however, China and Japan definitely YES).

It's right there in your first sentence. Nadal had to wrestle away #1 from Federer. We all saw this play out over 3-4 years as he inched closer and closer on grass/hard court. Djokovic hasn't nearly had the same titanic struggle. He came on strong towards the tail end of Fed's career, similar with Nadal's injuries. And Murray turned out to be Federer's Roddick.

In tennis we want our champions to be mettle tested. When Fed finally won RG 2009 it was the culmination of years of hard losses at the tournament. And if he does in fact ever win that final #18, it'll be similar.

I reckon Djokovic's only going to get such love towards the end of his own career.

Nadal is better looking than Djokovic ? You guy's are kidding me right ? Let's throw in Federer in their as well.

As a straight male, I will say that the best looking of the top 5 is Stan Wawrinka, followed by Djokovic.

Nadal is way overrated in the looks department. Weak chin, too neanderthal looking, plus he is loosing his hair, and he ain't Jack Nicholson or Bruce Willis to be able to support it.

Federer must have a great make up/stylist department. Strong chin, but thin lips (no smile), and humongous nose (which I would bet he has had surgery on).

Djokovic is better looking of the two by far. But Wawrinka simply oozes cool, which takes him up a couple of notches in the looks department by default.

Murray doesn't even enter the conversation.

So being straight male makes your opinion about male beauty more relevant because? Nadal is more exotic and a lot of women like that, Nole without the fame is just like a genuine east european. He is not ugly for sure but he is not top notch either.

your picture angle is a bit wider though...

This is from the Shanghai final last year:

"Having a lot of fan support certainly helps. His Chinese supporters packed the stadium on Sunday with Serbia flags, and as Djokovic noted earlier this week some have even given themselves Serbian names and are learning his country's national anthem."

If I were you I would either:
    1) check your eyes because you may have issues
    2) check your head because you may have issues seeing only what fits your agenda.
I counted 5 clearly seen flags plus one that may be "Nole" sign instead of a Serbian flag.

Would I be wrong if I said that when Fed plays or Nadal hits a forehand passing shot or Stan thumps a backhand, people go, "What a shot! I wish I could do that!" But when Djokovic hits a passing shot people go, "What a shot! I think I could maybe do that too, if I practised really hard," because Djokovic hits such effectively simple strokes and plays such a no-frills game of patience and perseverance that he doesn't generate quite the same amount of excitement and/or wonderment that Fed, Nadal and Stan do.

It's partly poor Djokovic's own fault for making the amazing look simple and achievable. That, however, is what makes his fanboys so loyal. Because they do know how much work he put in to be able to do just that.

No axe to grind, but Nadal has definitely aged much worse than Djocovic - growing up in the sun probably hasn't helped, and he is losing his hair.
I would also agree that Nadal is generally more popular. Possibly because he's been around longer, but also because he comes off warmer than Djocovic. And possibly, and I don't personally feel this way I hasten to add, because he's Eastern European and that makes people nervous.
I have absolutely no bias (I like them both equally/and can be irritated by them both equally). And as I say, just my opinion.

His parents/brothers/manager/Boris arrived early?! He may have spoken in Mandarin: "Zai nali shuishou?" (Where are the sailors?) They love that. The umpire said "thank you" in Chinese last night, and got a round of applause.

On TC "Best of Five", they did the 5 "sexiest" male players. I think a vote was taken by the female pros, though I'm not positive. Joker may have been number 5. Or 4. Or 3. I remember Bartoli laughed when his name came up. Rafa was number 1.

Joker isn't a bad looking guy at all. I love the dark, thick hair. And he has an attractive body. But he has all the sex appeal of Sam Querry. Zero. I can't even imagine him getting it on with either gender. None of my tennis-playing girlfriends seem to think he's sexy, from what I've noticed. Roger doesn't do anything for me, but sometimes he looks hot. A lot of times he just looks like Roger. I will say he's the only tennis player my elderly mother asked about. But she has TERRIBLE taste in men.

I thought Rafa was cute when he first came on to the tour. Loved the long hair, and biceps. He has a sweet smile, too. But, I guess I've gotten so used to him, I haven't thought of him "in that way" in a long time. But last year during that Asian World Team Tennis fortnight, he looked really handsome for what ever reason. Like a built pretty-boy. It was really nice. ;p

Now, on the social media, they rock!
The endorsement payouts, Federer > Novak > Nadal. I doubt Novak's endorsers are making less from him than Nadal's endorsers...
