Every time I turn on the TV Poker is on, ESPN, Travel Channnel, Etc. Etc. Poker from Vegas, Celebrity Poker, Championship poker, (and I'm sure they show strip poker on some of those channels I don't subscribe to) not to mention having to endure that Matt Damon movie on TBS or Spike. What's the deal ? (no pun intended) I don't understand why watching a bunch of guys in sunglasses sitting around a table is more interesting than watching pro tennis.

scotty is quite the badass......i love all the platinum and the fact that insists on drinking at the table all the time, hahha, best moment ever though, he called some guys 5 grand raise preflop with 8-3 offsuit and hit two pair or something ridiculous like that and started yelling, "F***, i thought we were playing blackjack, 11 man....."

Why its on T.V.? It's called a commercial for Las Vegas. The idea is to get people excited about gambling. It works.

Every other show on the "Travel Channel" is about Las Vegas.

Because over half the population of the United States play poker, and it has been going on for a very long time. It is also very entertaining, to more people than tennis.

...Aceinthehole, it was a pre-flop 100,000 bet against Humberto Brenes, and made the Brenes lay down A-10, Scotty had 8-3, third worst starting hand...

Pugger's right. I'd wager (pun intended) that more people play poker than tennis. Also, it's cheap to put on. Production costs are next to nothing. Compare that to a half hour sitcom like "Friends," where costs start at $6 million just for the cast. Cheaper to have 10 people in a house, over the course of two months, fighting for a $100,000 first prize. Or to have four people eat giant roaches for $50,000. If ESPN could make chess exciting television they'd do it. Two cameras. Two microphones. Two commentators. Two hours.

Move to Canada. You can watch 10 pin bowling, log-rolling and billiards instead of tennis.

This thread answered its own question. All of you are tennis fanatics, and you talk about poker at the drop of a hat. That is why they show poker more often than tennis. And poker's not even a sport.

poker is a game. the difference between a game and a sport, is that you can play a game with a cigarette in your mouth.

atatu - I hear what you're saying... basically the same complaint I have. Here in metro ATL, Comcast is (finally) offering the Tennis Channel starting 1 March, maybe that'll help. BTW, remember that ESPN=ENTERTAINMENT & Sports Programming Network - damn, with that name they could put any &!#? out there....

I made some money throughout the years playing poker. That usually pays for my tennis gear. :) Next time I go to Vegas will be the end of Aug.

  25. Is that all over America or only in Texas? I would assume that Texas hold`em is popular there? Still, It is crazy if it`s true. The pokerplayers are fine athletes...50 years old and 300 Ibs...

Poker gets more air time because more people watch it which means more companies are willing to shell out money to advertise which means more money to the broadcasters. Simple business logic.

Log rolling really isn't as bad as it sounds, it takes quite a bit of skill.

Playing poker is OK, but I can't understand why anyone would want to WATCH other people play poker for 2-3 hours.

yup pretty simple. now WHY someone would rather watch a card game than an actual sport is beyond me...why not play poker while watching a match?

more people in the U.S. watch and play poker than watch and play tennis. it's much more profitable for espn to show poker than tennis.
