Why is Serena still a favorite to win U.S. Open?

Serena doesn't have the female equivalent of Djokovic, Nadal and Federer to stop her on the women's tour. No legendary players, no real great talents. Just a bunch of silly little mugs who baseline bash erratically and can't string more than a few wins together.
Well, just keep in mind she has only won one TOURNAMENT in the last 3 years. The field have been beating her,not any one player...

But even when she was winning everything and racking up Slam after Slam, she never had any legendary players on her level to push her like on the men's side. She never had a Federer type player on grass to deal with or a Rafa like player on clay to deal with or a Novak or Murray. It was just her all the way through and nobody else emerging.

After watching highlights of Serena’s last match, I don’t think I’d be that comfortable betting on her. She looks slow compared to Svitolina.
Svitolina is one of my favorite players. Would love to see her win but don't think she has much of a chance. Like others have said Serena appears to be in best shape she has been in in last 3 years or so. Yes Serena is slower but when she gets to the ball she packs a wallop. And she gets what maybe 30, 40 free points a match on her serve. Big edge. Hope I'm wrong.
Elina is a thoroughbred. Serena is a plow horse.

Yes,that is true. There have been great players who have pushed her from time to time, but no one player who has stuck around. One of Osaka or Andreescu might be able to become an ATG with time still on their side, but yeah tennis is a lot more exciting when there are exciting rivalries that go back and forwards...

Andreescu is being tested. Serena Williams has had some one sided games. It could well turn out that steamrolling weak opponents will not serve Williams well.

Deep to the FH, short to the BH. Rinse, repeat. She cannot last any rally that goes through more than 3 of those cycles. Give her a steady diet of those for a few games and before you know it, they'll be making a documentary about her.

I really think Andreescu has the weapons to wear her out physically. I wish the match in Toronto could have finished without Serena retiring because it probably would have confirmed this.

Serena was awful in the Wimbledon final no matter how great Halep played, but she was never that impressive at Wimbledon anyway. She did well to take advantage of her easy draw to make the final there. Her feet barely moved, she was missing all kinds of easy balls, and even her serve was off.

The only one of those matches she even played mediocre was the U.S Open final vs Osaka. I am not worried though, her form all around is way better than any of those other events.
I guess you are one of those people that dont believe that the person on the other side of the court is a factor in why Serena played bad. There are times when a person plays lights out and there is nothing to be done about it.

Don't patronize me because you don't see the obvious and/or are plain stupid. I know Halep played great and was part of the reason Serena looked bad, and never said otherwise, but Serena was also extremely bad in this match, something that both Serena's haters and biggest fans would agree on. Even her serve which she has complete control over sucked, her footwork was embarassingly bad even though at this stage of Serena's career she is not the best mover. Of course Halep might have won even if Serena played decently well, that is completely aside the point. And like I said she never looked that good at Wimbledon to me, her draw was a total joke, especialy her laugher of a semi final opponent.

Serena's performances in her 3 slam finals since returning: 2018 Wimbledon bad, 2018 U.S Open mediocre, 2019 Wimbledon godawful. So only one has she played even semi okish in. However I am still confident as she is playing much better at this event than she was at any of those 3 tournaments and seems to have an extra determination in her eyes. If she somehow loses here it will be because she got slightly nervous and someone like Andreescu plays absolutely lights out and better than she has any match she has this tournament so far. I don't expect Serena to play poorly at all.

The Nadal of her time was Henin who won 4 out of 5 RGs. The Federer of her time was Venus as she was lethal on grass. The down side is their peaks didn't last long and they either left the game (Henin) or declined drastically because of illness and injury (Venus). She also dealt with Clijsters, Capriati, Pierce, Davenport, Hingis, Mauresmo, Li Na, etc but outlasted them all. Not Serena's fault that she was better than everyone else during different eras and that's why she was so successful.

For the love of pete, her competition is the likes of Sharapova/Wang/Wozniacki's of the world....these are ladies, not beasts. She literally frightened Martic off the court. Damn near smashed her with a forehand at the net! Of course she is the favorite. Her howling roars after points have reached a point where I think it's starting to scare her opponents.

Someone like Wang has literally zero chance. She would need injections of testosterone and androsterone for years. Wang is a dainty woman. There's a reason why Serena has been so successful in women's tennis. It's going to take a match against a well-playing townsend/keys/barty/andrescuu/Osaka type to beat her and hang physically. These are women that got a little more beef on em' ya know, some extra stones to keep up!

It's like putting Michael Cera in the ring with Hulk Hogan. Hogan is just going to skull thump him. Also, she's using a massive tennis racquet which helps to clearly overpower her opponents. She is giving these ladies the ole' wood shampoo , thunk!

It is called brand recognition. Until someone comes along that can constantly beat Serena, then media will drop her and or moan her loss to the world of tennis.

Also, Serena is easily recognizable due to a scientific term, "Steatopygia" which is marketable today with the Kim Kardashian leading the way making suet buttocks popular.

Shalom

What an atrocious poster and post. Your hatred and bigotry are shining right through. According to you, you need testosterone to beat Serena. You damn ignorant fool. You know she just lost to Halep at Wimbledon? You know shs lost to Kerber last Wimbledon? And remember Vinci a few years back? Sofia Kenin at the French? You are clueless!!!

Her competition has been subpar. I thought The Svitolina match would be tougher. I’m not sure if that was due to Svitolina having a bad strategy, being intimidated, choking which she tends to do in big matches, or Serena is in much better shape and feeling confident, or a combo. I thought Andreescu could test her, but the past few matches she’s been looking exhausted. I respect Serena, I find her to be a bit of a diva, and I’ll be honest: I’m ready for some new blood in the women’s game. At least there are rivalries in the ATP. Who’s rivaled Serena? Her sister and Sharapova. Venus is past her prime and Sharapova is...no idea.
