Why is Tomic still playing tennis?

There are guys I play that remind me that they beat me 15 years ago every time I see them. Even though they haven’t beaten anyone since then. I think it’s a little something like that

Tomic has talent. Just doesn't seem to care at all. Much like Gulbis who also is a remarkable talent. But he comes from a rich family so he doesn't need to work hard. Gulbis spent his entire $600K+ earnings from French Open 2014 in a casino within a couple of hours and laughed about it. Gotta love it :-D :-D

Tomic does not come from a rich family. He probably has no education or other job skills. What is his future? Club tennis pro giving lessons to uncoordinated adults and bratty rich kids?

He won't have the correct positive attitude to teach tennis. He probably hates tennis.

It's probably to score dates. Goes to a club picking up girls, telling them he's a pro tennis player with millions of dollars in the bank. Girls would be all into that.
Only after he's taken them home and gotten what he wanted from them do they realize he's a bum :-D
 
He's made 11 million dollars from tennis from on court earnings and endorsements. All of that has been tax free as he's been a Monaco resident since 2014. If he had even a mildly competent investment counselor, he should be financially set for life. But considering it's headcase Tomic, he's probably heavily in debt.

Consider he's so nutty he lied about having COVID just to get a bit of attention on social media.

I saw him at the ITF in Austin this year. He was with his girlfriend/assistant/coach.

I think all he knows is tennis from a young age. It is great when you turn out like a Rune or Alcaraz, but terrible for the vast majority.

Being a talented junior more often ends up being a curse.

Regardless whether you live on Monaco, you still need to pay income taxes in the city, state, country you earned the money. So subtract at least 35%.

Then add up all the expenses in pro tennis, traveling, living, coaching, etc. He probably has no savings left. Why else is he playing futures and challengers? Unfortunately he is losing any money that he has left on the lower tours.

Pro tennis is brutal.

For the most part, I think being super talented in anything when you’re really young and then have obsessive adults around you trying to capitalize on that talent whether it’s monetarily or through narcissistic social points is a bad thing for the kid. You see it in sports, music, academics, everything.

Tomic also has had a spat with Nick Kyrgios for a while. Tomic wanted to settle it on the grass courts with each guy putting up a million dollars, winner take all.
Kyrgios refused and called Tomic a waste of time and a non-challenge.
Tomic then challenged Kyrgios to a boxing match. No report yet on when it will take place.

“We all know this, I know this — I’m probably a top 10 player in the world on grass. I will do it, before I retire, I will do it, that’s for sure.”

He elaborated in an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald: “Time is running out. I’ve realised I need to snap out of it and get back to the sport, finish it off the right way and retire happy. Guilt free.

What do you expect him to do instead? He has no other skills. All his self-worth comes from playing tennis.

Contrary to this thread I would say Tomic is actually displaying a decent work ethic right now. He has played close to 50 matches in the last 9 months, all in far-from-glamorous locations, and has steadily dragged himself back up the rankings from below 800 to inside the top 400. During that time he has (as far as I can tell) stayed well out of the media and kept his head down.

His immediate goal really needs to be at or around a ranking of 200 - this will give him access to ATP/GS qualifying draws (which means having a shot at financially breaking even). Last time he was at this level (2021) he won about $145K in prizemoney, which is still enough to support himself after paying his tour expenses. But at his age and with $45K in prizemoney in the last 18 months, the clock is ticking.

Personally I think it would be great to see Tomic make it back to the main tour. Last August he was about to turn 30 and ranked 825 - coming back from that would be a massive achievement. It would hopefully help him reclaim some respect for himself and create a new final impression on the tennis world before he heads off into the next stage of his life.

I say good luck to him.

That’s pretty much every legitimate journeyman in the top 500. Not a TTW journeyman since that’s just an unrealistic characterization. The guys who commit their whole lives and get stuck in tennis limbo touring at small time events with small time money. Either out of passion for the game or lack of a better option. Shoutout to those guys though, unsung talents and an important part of the sport

It's really impossible to say. It depends how wisely he's managed his finances. Last couple of years he's been in the red, but the guy did make good money for most of his career - the 6-7 years he spent in the top 50 would have netted him some good appearance fees and sponsorships on top of his $6.2M in prizemoney. If he socked a fair chunk of that away, he will have some kind of cushion for retirement.

That said there's plenty of players who've earned more than him who ended up broke. Just look at Mark Philippousis.

At 30 and ranked ~400, he is not playing for the money. He is paying to tour, has been for the last 2 years.

I think it is more likely he continues to play tennis because he doesn't know what else to do. You only get one career, and he is still talented. I am sure he believes that if he can drag himself back into qualifying draws, he has the talent to maybe do something special one last time. I think all the guys who scratch their way around the circuit at that level believe the same thing - else why would you do it?

Tomic actually was the inaugural champion the first year of the Rafa Nadal Open in 2018! He then won an ATP250 the following month. This was 9 months after his failed reality stint on I'm a Celebrity, get me out of her. Funny year that was for him.

I always wonder why these guys don't wake up sooner when they still have a legitimate shot. Reminds me of Fish who also had an eating problem, curtailed it during the end stage of his career and won the Atlanta open like 3 times.
I am afraid Tomic's time has run out.

Tennis is their day job. Don't forget. Let's say we have lots of money. If you and I stop working today, what does that do to us? Having nothing to do eats us inside. It does to me. It's not good for mental health. The same applies to tennis players. I guess that's why Murray is playing too. He has options like opening an academy but may be that is not something he's interested in.

Murray, Venus and Wawrinka are playing because they love playing still I think, even if they know they aren't going to win much (though I think Murray and Venus still have a bit of ego and think perhaps rightly that on their day they can still beat anyone). Tomic plays because he needs to and bc he realises he basically screwed up his career - he seems to have a steady non Only Fans model gf now and is not getting a steady stream of WCs to big tourneys anymore - he definitely wasn't playing challengers pretty recently so he is working himself up from the bottom. Yes, he's a clown but he deserves a little credit for trying to make up for lost time
