Why is Wimbledon the only Slam without obnoxious giant sponsor billboards on the main court?

Why?
Doesn't Wimbledon need huge sponsor?
The only obvious logo is the tiny Rolex logo on the scoreboard.

BBC Licensing. (Most)TV Owners in UK pay an annual fee which funds BBC programming. I believe Wimbledon contract has just been extended until 2020 but it could change in the future.

Hockey has always been the worst, initially confining itself to ads on the boards around the rink, then starting to paint ads on to the ice surface itself, and recently I noticed a few arenas actually putting ads on the plexiglass around the rink that fans are supposed to watch the game through.

Because Wimbledon is funded by Debenture Holders not by commercial enterprises. They also keep all the fees from TV rights etc. because the prize money is small compared to what they get in.

Because it's tradition. Like the Masters in golf which has a total of 4 minutes of advertising in one hour. CBS makes no money off of the Masters. They just want to be the name associated with the Masters.

If you watch ESPN's coverage of Wimbledon and the Masters they do not have the bottom scroll on during most if not all matches. They only have the score box. For the Masters there's only the player score on the screen, the Masters logo and CBS.

Both of these tournaments have more leverage when negotiating because of their prestige.

I've noticed other networks doing this for the majors. Tennis channel was doing this for Roland Garros for a few matches. No clutter on screen except the scoreboard.

In golf I think NBC was doing this with US Open. Now their coverage is of the Open and I think they've been doing it too.

I associate adverts with Roland Garros, probably cos they've been there ever since I started watching tennis. Admittedly, they used to be more in the background, black/dark green text on green. But they've always been everywhere.

One of the great contrasts is leaving there and going to Wimbledon, where the Centre Court is so dark green and the grass and the players in white just stand out so much. It's a beautiful sight, though as has been said, adverts have always been there, too . . . just way way more discrete.

There is no where to put advertisements at the sides of Wimbledon and they are not going to put them under the Royal Box.

As a consequence, they don't have much choice but to praise themselves for their devotion to tradition..

Don't forget square acreagewise Roland Garros is half the size of the other slams. So they have to make up the difference in potential revenue somewhere compared to the other slams.

The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, also known as the All-England Club, based at Church Road, Wimbledon, London, England, is a private members' club.Wikipedia

Isn't Wimbledon the only private club to host a Grand Slam event (like the Masters)?
The other 3 are held by governing bodies on Tennis in their respective countries.

I suspect that is the reason. Wimbledon is simply not as much of a profit motive as the other tournaments.

That's correct. The tournament is owned and run by the AELTC (All England Lawn Tennis Club). All players, members and visitors alike, have to abide by the Club rules eg. the wearing of white outfits when on court.

Eh? See all the green bits at the sides of the courts - that's where they could put adverts. They choose not to.

My understanding is that Wimby's intent is to skip the glut of 19th century 2D advertising, and make the leap to holography. This will take place upon the GOAT's retirement, at which time his virtual image will grace Centre Court, always. In this way, his mere presence will elevate the status of every other player to trek that hallowed turf.

The product they are selling is caprine in nature.

It is just another form of advertising, actually.

Many people mistake the absence of "in your face" ads for no ads driven enterprise.

It is the main objective of doing it like that.

Wimbledon is the cathedral of tennis. Sacred places like that don't need no stinkin' advertising, unless it's something expensive and classy like Rolex.

I wouldn't call Rolex expensive or particularly classy, but they're a classic, yes.

Maybe because Wimbledon is even more full of themselves than all of those giant sponsor bill boards.

Tradition is what it mostly boils down to. Still, there have always been sponsorship on Wimbledon courts like Rolex, Slazenger and as of quite recently Jaguar, but it's always been discreet.
Exactly, the only slam that is not completely sold to advertisers!

:D

When fedr retires, Wimbledon will phase out lawnmowers and hire professional mountain goats to graze on the grass.

Minimum five years experience required. A positive H2H against golden eagles optional, because for sure(shs) fedr is unbeatable unless he beats himself, no?

Because it's the best, and hasn't sold its soul just yet.
yeah sure besides, you know, making grass court tennis as we knew it extinct. Besides the true purpose of the tournament going completely down the tube the last 10 years, yeah it's the best and hasn't sold its soul! The late stages of Wimbledon have predominantly featured baseline-heavy players since 2005. 2004 was the last year we saw any kind of variety with Fed playing all court, Ancic serving and volleying, Grosjean mixing in some net play, Roddick doing his thing. Since then it's mostly been pathetic.

The grass at Wimbledon is more fit for grazing than playing grass court tennis.

Funny how it's the most 'traditional' Slam, yet one of the first to get a retractable roof.

If only the FO used all that BNP advertising revenue to put a goddam roof over their centre court, so that when it rained or the wind blows like last night the court doesnt become a windswept dust blown hell hole!

They are planning to have one in place by 2020.

Wimbledon is a museum.
Wikipedia: "Centre Court is the main court at the Wimbledon Championship. Its only regular use for play is during the two weeks a year that the Championships take place."

This face will be projected onto both sides of the net at center court. It shall both humble and inspire the players.
