Why Nadal is not just a clay court king

"If Nadal is a "clay court champion" as so many have said then, what does it say the Federer, at least one of the greatest grass and hard court players ever, has lost to him on both surfaces. Did Kuerten ever beat Sampras at Wimbledon?"

Rafa>>>>>Kuerten

When he defends some more grass and hardcourt slams sure, he's a multi-surface player but most of his overwhelming and crushings came on clay, not to mention that 4 straight win at FO lends more credibility to him being a clay court GOAT than either a grass or hardcourt one...

Nobody's is saying that he's "just" a clay court king, not me anyway.

But maybe some are because he won ONE slam on grass, ONE slam on hardcourt and FOUR-IN-A-ROW on clay.

Take it easy...relax.

Federer and Kraijcek did!

Of course Roger did. He's the GOAT on grass. The fact that Nadal beat him on grass and took him to the limit in other grass events (and HC) shows that everyone underestimates Nadal.

But if you want to say that nadal is a great hardcourt player. Explain to me why nadal cant make it to the finals of the USO. The Ao is super slow, not considered a real hardcourt

...and Federer won the FO the year it wasn't playing like real clay but like HC due to global warming just like it happened in 1996 when coincidentally Pete reached his only FO SF

Nadal has only had like 5 opportunities in the USOpen since he's been an adult (since he was eighteen) and in general he's pretty worn down by that time of year. He has had injury issues during those time periods as well. Federer has really been the only one who can dominate on all 4 surfaces for most of the year. No one is disputing that.

Nadal isn't just a clay court king. He's an M&S clay court king.

Yeah this is such a lame thread with no worth at all.

Oh whoops. Whatever I just think Nadal gets knocked as only a clay courter when he obviously has done really well and beaten the GOAT on all surfaces. Federer had an 84% winning percentage against other lefties and 86% against righties so it's not a bad matchup thing.

It is a bad match up name me another player who can generate the same lefty topsin like nadal can to Fed's backhand where the ball is always high above his shoulders

Nadal is the current king of clay but he is the king of nothing else. Federer is pretty much the king of every other surface.... based on Grand Slams, of course.

Really? You'd think the GOAT could find a way around this. Geez.
The "GOAT" has been on a roll at slams. If Nadal cant even beat his opposition and reach the final, he is irrelevant to the conversation.

What conversation? I'm not saying Nadal is the GOAT. I'm saying he's very underrated in history.
No he is not. You are overrating him. He is an amazing CLAY COURT player who is up there as the greatest in history along with borg. Other than that he has 1 wimbledon and 1 AO. He is where he belongs. He has lots more to prove on other surfaces.

I'm not calling Federer the GOAT. Federer's only option is to run around the BH which free's up too much space on the court. It's like me saying can Nadal find a way to get around flat hitters on fast hardcourts.

So the fact that he beat Federer at AO and Wimbledon (when hardly anyone else has) and would have 8 slams if not for Fed means nothing?

Lendl would have 18 slams had he not lost those finals. Federer would have had 21 slams had it not been for nadal. "would have"s do not count in tennis.

You are so in love with Nadal that you want to give him credit for things he has never achieved.

'Based on grand slams'. Everyone knows Sampras has more Wimbledon titles than Federer.

Right and Lendl and Federer are legends. it seems that around here no one is giving credit to Nadal for his abilities and accomplishments. I agree he has to win a few more GS's to be a real legend but I have no doubt he will. I'm not "in love" with Nadal. I am a Federer fan as well. Not sure why everyone is so hostile in this thread!

I have been a tennis fan for 20 years. Relax people.

Nadal IS a legend! He is among the top slam winners of all time. If that is what you wanted to hear, there you go. No one denys Nadal is a great player but as of right now, he has a lot of potential he has yet to fulfill.

I dont think thats the only thing. From what Ive seen Nadal just gets to everything. Many balls Fed hits for winners against anyone else are not only returned by Nadal but returned offensively. Alot of this is speed but he also has great court sense and footwork. I think this is also why he has problems against counter punchers like Murray more so than aggressive players like Fed.

Anyone who says Nadal is just a clay player is in denial. Nadal has been an all-surface player for a while. He's one of the top 2 grass player and the best clay courter in the world. On hard courts he's still having trouble here and there but I consider him a great HC player overall, top 10 at the very least.

Oh my god. Nadal is not even close to clay GOAT then. What's up with all these *********s saying so?
Well, Nadal had that tremendous run of 81 straight clay matches won which is damn amazing to be honest. It was way longer than borgs.

Despite winning a ONE hard court major, Nadal is a terrible hard court player...look at his style of play, it's like hes playing on clay(lol) hence all these in knee injuries he has. TBH the only reason why he has had SOME success on HCs is because he runs everything down and makes opponents go for line shots, which usually result in errors.

My two cents.

Sorry but Borg is the King of Clay ( 6FO titiles) and more ability than Nadal ever had!
In fact Borg plays Clay better than Nadal!

"some success"? He's won a slam on hard, Indian Wells twice, Canada twice, Madrid indoor, the Olympics, Dubai, Beijing, has made the final of Miami, Shanghai and Paris indoor. And let's not forget his success on grass either at Queen's and Wimbledon.
A lot of so called fast court specialists would kill for a record like that, sorry, starting with Roddick who is desperate to ever win W.
