He has declined everywhere this year, and most of his decline has come on clay. Players like Nishikori could not push Nadal that much before 2014. He was only pushed and beaten by lesser players way back in 2003-2004, and that blip in 2009. I think Djokovic has a solid chance at beating Nadal in the final today, considering he took Nadal to five sets last year after Nadal's real decline on clay started in 2013, but he had not declined enough for Djokovic to win yet. Now players like Ferrer worry Nadal, when in the past they would not have been a threat on clay.
Soderling was a minor blip, besides 2009 Nadal has won Roland Garros every year since 2005. I feel that now we're witnessing the real decline of Nadal on clay, and it's a hard sight to see considering in just 2012 Nadal dominated the clay stretch, beating everyone soundly and only dropped one set at Roland Garros. In 2013 that was not the same story, as he dropped sets everywhere on clay, to players like Almagro and Brands. Both lesser players than Nadal and both players who have either had a short lived stay in the top ten or are basically journeyman. Next year could be Nadal's Sampras at Wimbledon 2002 year at Roland Garros, which will make Novak look subpar if he beats Nadal today, but that is not true as Nadal is still good enough to meet him. So any discrediting towards Djokovic for beating a "weak Nadal" will need to be shafted. If he wins today, his win is entirely deserved but it will still leave a bitter taste in my mouth, and in my mouths of many others because the 2012 version of Nadal on clay could potentially win this match, but since his layoff he has not been the same on clay.
