He has declined everywhere this year, and most of his decline has come on clay. Players like Nishikori could not push Nadal that much before 2014. He was only pushed and beaten by lesser players way back in 2003-2004, and that blip in 2009. I think Djokovic has a solid chance at beating Nadal in the final today, considering he took Nadal to five sets last year after Nadal's real decline on clay started in 2013, but he had not declined enough for Djokovic to win yet. Now players like Ferrer worry Nadal, when in the past they would not have been a threat on clay.

Soderling was a minor blip, besides 2009 Nadal has won Roland Garros every year since 2005. I feel that now we're witnessing the real decline of Nadal on clay, and it's a hard sight to see considering in just 2012 Nadal dominated the clay stretch, beating everyone soundly and only dropped one set at Roland Garros. In 2013 that was not the same story, as he dropped sets everywhere on clay, to players like Almagro and Brands. Both lesser players than Nadal and both players who have either had a short lived stay in the top ten or are basically journeyman. Next year could be Nadal's Sampras at Wimbledon 2002 year at Roland Garros, which will make Novak look subpar if he beats Nadal today, but that is not true as Nadal is still good enough to meet him. So any discrediting towards Djokovic for beating a "weak Nadal" will need to be shafted. If he wins today, his win is entirely deserved but it will still leave a bitter taste in my mouth, and in my mouths of many others because the 2012 version of Nadal on clay could potentially win this match, but since his layoff he has not been the same on clay.

I can't believe how both camps are already coming up with excuses if their player loses.

If Djokovic beats Nadal tomorrow, then his win is entirely deserved. No buts.

Same thing if the match goes Nadal's way. No injured wrist, dry courts, Pascal Maria, or whatever other nonsense gets conjured up.

nope ....sorry....nads in 3 easy sets. You do realise he hit 26 winners to 9 UE's against the last serb he played....Also he got to 3-3 in the final set of the rome final!

Nadal was in decline after U.S Open. But he appears to have slowly recharged his batteries since then and appears in top form. Nadal hasn't been tested yet this tournament, so Djoker has that in his corner.

No way Nadal loses, last year Djokovic only squeaked out a 5th with a tie break in the 4th. French Open is like life to Nadal, did you see the way he defended those cross court forehand from Djokovic into his backhand in the 5th set last year, it was like the Nadal and Parera families' life were depended on him making those backhand shots deep and awkward for Djokovic to attack and he made them, you can see that he willed himself into hitting those shots. We all know that if we go to a 5th set this year Nadal is going to go saving his family's life mode and beat Djokovic once again.

Who says this is a jinx? This is an actual prediction, and for the record, I like Nadal more than Djokovic. The guy just can't keep winning forever.

Those break points in the third set of last year's US Open still sting?

not really.....i just turned the tv on in that game and seen the score, seen what was going on and thought.....novak has this.....and then he collapsed.it was quite remarkable.

What if he collapses again in tonight's final, we all know that he can crush Nadal in non-slam events but I just don't get how he just mentally dialed out in last year's French Open(lost with a string of unforced errors) and US Open (Federesque choke on those third set break points). I'm afraid, Nadal is just going to will himself to another slam victory tonight and make the slam head to head at 9-3.

youre dead right.....the last game of the match Djokovic just handed it to him.thats why he hired good old boris.......get some german efficiency into him.

 He collapsed or Rafa hit some amazing shots?

Wristkovic collapsed admiring how remarkable those winners were flying past him, knowing deep down that he could never produce such wonderful shots due to his limited physicality and mental strength.

novak ran out of puff because he didnt have the lance effect happening

Nadal's 2014 Roland Garros SF is the best he has ever played on clay. It is above his 2008 RG Final level. He'll only need to play half as good as that to beat Djokovic.

I agree. Wristovic can only crawl back to his hole with Chico as they can only watch Nadal blasting 22 winners past them in one set. And the real head to head will be 9-3. And Wristovic will still remain as a tier 3 just like his coach B. Becker. (6 slams what a joke, thinking he could withstand the onslaught from a tier 1 great like Nadal).

I agree, 2013 was the year for Djokovic. Nadal was clearly struggling with his knees upon returning. His knee didn't loosen up until August. So at Roland Garros, Nadal was there for the taking. That was Djokovic's chance, and he blew it.

You think Djokovic's level dropped?
