Why no Self-Rating guidelines for coaches?

Recently became aware of a player that coached d3 tennis for 3 years. Self-rated as a 3.0. He blew everyone away at 3.0. Got dq'd to 3.5 and continued to blow players away but now does have a 3.5 C rating which I anticipate will become 4.0C at the end of 2016 because there are no 3.5 players here that can beat this guy.

Shouldn't there be some minimum self ratings for folks that coach tennis? I mean if you have a racquet in your hand everyday for 3 years there's no way you should be able to self-rate as a 3.0.

In high school, our coach was the school's guidance counselor who was more of a "caretaker" or "bus driver" for the team as opposed to a coach. He would have rightfully had a 3.0 rating. It sounds like this guy just misrated himself.

Definitely agree with high school. Our local high school's coach last year would have struggled at 2.5.

But I can't imagine this scenario would happen at the college level.

Alta league in Atlanta requires players who coach for money in last 12 months to play at AA level until they are 55 years old. There are flights of AA level such as aa1, aa2 and aa3. All AA flights are mostly 4.5 to open level players. There are a few top 4.0 players on AA teams but they likely play line 5 or as an alternate.

This is tough for some coaches as there are good coaches who would struggle on AA teams due to age or lack of playing time

Up through 2011, the NTRP Guidelines said that a Teaching Professional could self-rate no lower than 4.0. But by 2013, that restriction had been dropped. So it looks like he's unrestricted unless by local rule or if he meets any of the other criteria in the current Guidelines. Too many complaints from bus drivers I guess.
