When asked, after an unriveted regular season what would happen next, the unforgetable Mo Malone, who had joined the team the former summer just repplied: " Fo, Fo and Fo".
Yes, they only lost one single play off match (Milwaukee) en route to the title, devastating the talent loaded Lakers in the final. This has been, plainly and simply, the brightest ever exhibition that the NBA has witnessed in its rich history in the finals.Man, we talk about the 83 Lakers, the former season champions ( 4-2 vs the 76 rs who didn´t still have Malone) with Magic,Nixon,Wilkes,Worthy,Cooper,Mc Adoo,Kupchak and Jabbar to start with a few names.
How on earth could that happen?
Well, star and stars allignement is the only possible explanation. The year in which Cheeks, Toney, Erving,Iavaroni and Malone played too well, too solid, too motivated for too long.Their bench always delivered.Guards Franklin Edwards and Clint Richardson, Center Clemon Johnson, the classy power forward Reggie Johnson and the several times best sixth man of the league, the forward Bobby Jones. They were led by an expert and willing to win coach like Billy Cunningham.Katz was the team´s proud owner.
It wouldn´t last however. They did pretty well in 1984 but the Celtics won the crown. In 1985 they added promising young men like Leon Woods and Charles Barkley but the chemistry had magically dissapeared. The soul of the team, Cheeks,Dr J and Mo were declining fastly and Phily never again had such a team.
But let´s focus on the 83 team.Cheeks was a great point guard, a clutch player when required and a smart passer.Andrew Toney was a crazy shooting guard that had a magnet in 1983.Of course, Dr J was the team inspiration. He had challenged himself and the world to at least win an NBA title before saying bye bye.In 1983 he devoted himself totally to the team needs.
Mark Iavaroni was a tough power forward who had been a fail the former season in Italy, but did whatever needed ( like Bobby Jones coming from the bench) to make untangibles work for his team. And what is to say about the greatest offensive rebounding machine the NBA ever had? Moses came to Phily to win the title. He had lost the 1981 final against Boston when he was a Rocket. He wouldn´t lose another final. The inteligent management of Cunningham made the rest.
Those 76 rs were on a mission and couldn´t be stopped. They had great players in their starting line up but they couldn´t have won the way they did without a very productive bench. This is the way the game should be played and, in this regard, the 1983 76 rs have been one of the brightest teams of any time.
