Why not, let's pay attention to Challengers too...

At Lexington the men's doubles quarter final seems to have been held up with McHugh and Nava up 5-4. Doesn't seem to be raining.

Having finished playing college tennis at Texas Christian University earlier this year, 23-year-old Jacob Fearnley has gone on a precocious tear on the Challenger circuit. In just four events, these are his results:

Nottingham: Winner (as a qualifier)
Chicago: Semi-finalist (as a qualifier)
Lincoln: Winner
Rennes: Winner

Today he saved two match points in the second set to defeat Quentin Halys 0-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 in France. Before his title in Nottingham in June, he was world number 525 - when Monday's rankings come out, he'll be up to 129.

Fearnley update: the guy was absolutely crushing forehands to defeat Alexander Blockx and make his fourth Challenger final in five events at the Open d'Orleans, which pays out 125 points to the winner. He'll face Harold Mayot or Marc-Andrea Huesler in the final, and a win would mark another milestone on this meteoric rise by taking him into the top 100. As it stands Fearnley sits at #108 in the live rankings.

Basavareddy and Nardi pick up Challenger titles in Mexico and Italy, respectively

I'm not sure what's happening with the "Race To Jeddah" for the NextGen Championship. Nishesh Basavareddy was in 8th place with 390 points at the start of last week, just 19 points behind Joao Fonseca. Then, Basavareddy won the Puerto Vallarta Challenger over the weekend to pick up 50 more points while Fonseca was idle. That should move him past Fonseca and solidly into 7th place. In fact, Basavareddy was the #1 seed in the next Challenger tournament that starts this week just a couple hours drive down from Puerto Vallerta, but he pulled out this morning, seemingly because he clinched his spot in the NextGen. However, the ATP article this morning talks about how he is still in 8th place (not true) and they have been posting videos about Fonseca being at the NextGen (even though he hasn't technically qualified yet).

This is weird and disorganized.

Basavareddy is #7 in the Race listings.

When is the cut off for the Next gen finals race? Can people still gain points towards it next week, or are the results of this week it?

Rocha & Wong could still pass Fonseca this week if one of them wins a title. I hope it doesn't matter though, having a young 18-year old qualify would be more exciting.

Yes, they finally updated it last night. The ATP also published a story that Basavareddy had clinched a qualifying spot into the NextGen Championships, so he's in now.

With the $150k minimum for participation in the NextGen and the $100k minimum guaranteed for getting the 1st round wildcard at the Australian Open, Nishesh is looking at forgoing at least a quarter million dollars by going back to Stanford, so my guess is that he'll officially turn pro and take the money. With his success on the Challenger tour and being on the brink of the top 100, he's probably ready.

The cut-off for the NextGen Championship qualifications is December 2nd. So yes, the tournaments this week count. And you are correct... if Wong wins the tournament in Japan, he ties with Fonseca (and I'm not sure who gets the tiebreaker nod), or if Rocha wins the tournament he's in, he bypasses them both for the 8th spot.

EDIT: Philip Sekulic just won the first set over Wong in the 2nd round of the Challenger in Japan. Sekulic also beat Wong 6-1, 6-2 earlier this year in their only other match. If that stays on form, Wong will be eliminated.

EDIT 2: Sekulic won, so Wong is eliminated from the NextGen race. Only Rocha has a chance to supplant Fonseca now. His next match is tomorrow.

Coria, Dzumhur and Ramos-Vinolas are all in the bottom half of the draw in Maia, the opposite half to Rocha. So winning the title probably won't be easy.

Rocha seems to mostly play on clay, so I don't expect much of him if he reaches the next gen finals. (Of course Fonseca might not either, but he has two more years to build on the experience.) Of course, Rocha did beat Ruud at the DC so maybe he'd surprise us.

Henrique Rocha plays qualifier Andrej Martin, who beat his older brother Francisco Rocha in the first round. A chance to avenge his brother maybe!

Henrique lost to Martin in straight sets. That means Fonseca gets the last qualifying spot.

Landaluce and Wong finished 9th and 10th, so I think they get to go as alternates in case of an injury. They get $15k plus expenses just to hang out and practice in Jeddah, so I'd be surprised if they turned that down.

Big appearance fee and prize money for the top 8 qualifiers:

Yes it's good money for an early career tennis player, for sure.

Just a shame that it is taking place where it is if you ask me.

Colton Smith and Tristan Schoolkate (one of two players to take a set from Jannik Sinner at the 2025 AO) pick up titles.

Mikael Ymer, who was banned for 18-months for missing 3 tests makes his return.

Alex Kovacevic is having a good week down in the Dominican Repulic, he beat the #1 seed (Muller) and is in the finals. That tournament also had a pretty strong draw with Norrie, Garin, Goffin, Fognini, Mensik, Seyboth Wild and Etcheverry in the mix.

Super happy he won the final! Hope to see him in the top 50 soon.

Seems pretty unfair that top level tour level guys can play in these events.
I thought the rule was that only one top-tenner is permitted to play in a Challenger event. But it's rough on someone at the edge of 100 rank to face someone ranked 21-75, for example...
That was quite the star-studded Challenger in Phoenix, wasn't it? Love to see Taro and PP Herbert doing well in those.

Nice win by Fonseca in Phoenix.
Even had Mats W on a cameo first set commentary. Reminiscing on how Sampras played and beat him - 2 shot tennis
Judging by the pre interview, Fons is pumped to be in Miami.
