Just came across this in the sports news ?

Why do they have to put the poor horse to death ? Was there no other life for the horse ?
A Kazakh pentathlete was knocked unconscious and taken to hospital and her horse put to death with a broken neck after an accident during the Asian Games on Tuesday.
Galina Dolgushina was thrown from her mount during the equestrian leg of the women's pentathlon at an obstacle in the show-jumping leg and landed on her head, leading to a temporary suspension of competition.
The 29-year-old was stretchered onto an ambulance and taken to a hospital in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou in an unconscious state.
A Kazakhstan official, however, said she was still undergoing medical checks at the hospital but her condition was stable.
"She is bruised but alright," Kazakhstan's deputy chef de mission Aslan Amanov told Reuters. "She has woken up. She can now walk around."
Officials at the scene said that Dolgushina's horse, D252, had broken its neck and had to be put down.
Rider safety in equestrian sports has come under severe scrutiny at the Asian Games following the death of South Korean rider Kim Hyung-chil in the 2006 Doha games, when he fell and was crushed by his horse on a rain-soaked cross-country course.
Was there really no other option, or is this just the cheapest way out.

yes, it is called glue, and dog-meat.... sorry just a joke

It seems horses don't do well with treatments that require immobilization and restricted activity. Remember a couple years ago some famous horse with a leg problem--they tried all sorts of stuff and it was in the news for months, wound up with the horse failing and having to be put down. So generally, I think the experts are recognizing injuries where the chances of recovery are near zero and euthanizing is the humane thing to do. Probably is cheaper, too.

It's not that they're punishing the horse because it's rider got hurt (I hope.)

Maybe I'm reading this wrong here.

D252, had broken its neck and had to be put down.

Means the horse broke its neck and had to be "put Down" not they killed the killed the horse by breaking it neck

JSWINF basically nailed it. Horses have to move to get the proper blood circulation to the limbs. To completely demobilize a horse to heal a broken neck would essentially cut all circulation off to those limbs. \

Theres not a Horse man that I know that would even put a horse though the misery of that treatment even it was afordable.

^^ Thanks, i feel much better.

Now I do remember reading about a baby camel (or giraffe) somewhere that broke its leg and they were talking of putting it down.

I would imagine they have similar issues to horses and immoblized limbs.

I have a family member who breeds Belgians and no serious injury have ever happened to his horses from pulling plows or carriages.
