Why Sinner is SinneGOAT

SinneGOAT

Let me tell you all a story. The story of a little known Italian kid with a beautiful head of hair and... skiing!?! This Italian Stallion’s rise from skiing to the (superior) sport of tennis was an interesting sprint to the top. From small beginnings to a $250,000 earnings, this is the story of Jannick Sinner, and why Sinner is SinneGOAT.

Sinngger's skiing, Rubles boxing, Tim's 8-hours, Zod's 15kg. Am I missing any fables of nexgen toughguy roughmuggery? Hope none of them get upset if I have.

Meanwhile, here's Mirka from Basel.

Watch a bit of his match against Coria, his power from both sides is incredible, with such a flawless technique too. Looks like a smaller Berdych
That is why I love his game, I’m surprised how fast he was able to get to a match and tournament winning mindset.

I used to be in the ABZ camp, but I have grown to tolerate him - almost grudgingly fond of him in a "slightly annoying cousin" kind of way.

However, he has not yet shown that he has what it takes to win these kind of matches in non-COVID conditions on any kind of regular basis.

I think Jannik takes him in 4.

Yes, we have been SINNERs asking for forgiveness since early 2019. Incredibly impressive since Bergamo’19 Challenger.

Berdych made one slam final in his career. People here are proclaiming Sinner as the future GOAT. Something's gotta give?

Interestingly, Zverev and Sinner have pretty close UTRs, for those Elo fans. Zverev is 15.31 and Sinner is 15.19, or #17 and #25 in the world, respectably. Zverev is massively underrated compared to his rankings, while Sinner is massively overrated compared to his.

I sure hope this is the opposite

Please no! Any resemblance to Berdych kills it for me!

Berdych is an American at heart and in tennis: all power, and no finesse. Berrettini is sort of that way too!

When he's on, he's on. He's hitting huge right now. The inside out FH to the far corner is just killing the tour. Unless he just loses the mental game, since it's Rafa, could be an exciting match. I think Rafa is vulnerable, I thought Rafa looked a little heavy in Rome by about 10-15 lbs, wasn't tracking down balls like the past... he's playing his way into shape but Sinner is on fire right now,.

The guy doesn't have the prima donna mentality that so many of the top juniors have. If he is playing like this with an overgrown adolescent's body, can imagine him dominating in GOAT fashion in the coming years when he fills out his frame.
Yup. He has a quiet aggression and menace about him. You never saw him gesticulate overly at any point yesterday, not even after winning the match. No theatrics, totally businesslike. In a way, reminds me of Thiem but, as a huge fan of the one handed backhand, that Sinner double hander is a big asset for him. And his ability to hit on the rise is already extremely impressive and his tactics more thoughtful, way more so, than Thiem at the same age.

Except he seems to be able to hit on the rise better and can direct balls to anywhere on the court. One thing I like about this guy and I admit I need to watch his play more, is it seems like he does not try to rely too much on speedy defense like all the youngsters (even the tall spindly ones) but instead seems to hit shots that make it hard for the opponent to attack. This could very well come from his playing against adult players at an early age where if you try to play defense against faster, stronger players you’ll get crushed. Instead he seems to hit shots that keeps the opponent in neutral. Tomorrow’s match against Nadal will be interesting for sure...

Nadal will use the slice to control his power and the drop shots to interrupt his rhythm.

No wonder people call you a troll lol. As much as I would love that, he still has Djokovic and Nadal to contend.

He is playing better than Nadal and Novak already. On faster lower bouncing court in australia, he will overpower these guys and all others put before him. Something changed in this guy after August, it all started at US open this year, and carried into french open.
He is improving at Exponential rate, he was the Biggest hitter at this french open. did you know that ? Plus his movement is so much better than just 3 month ago. By next January, he will be able to beat Novak , Rafa, and even Federer if he plays

He himself has stated that he likes the indoor? hardcourt, maybe I will find that quote. If you speak Italian go to Youtube and search for intervista Piatti Sinner, there is a wealth of information there and the interactions between him and his coach are golden.

His serve was already very consistently among the fastest in RG, look up his stats, but he lacks somewhat in variety and placement. His speed consistency is surprisingly high and bodes well for other areas where muscle memory is key.

His return game isn't shabby and perhaps underappreciated but he can do better with reading the serve which should come with experience.

His groundstrokes have a lot of speed and spin and are so far his biggest weapons on court and form an excellent basis. Arguably his forehand has more growth potential as he becomes stronger, his backhand is already mighty.

Interesting that he pointed out that Medvedevs created him problems with his 'strange' stroke but that he afterwards worked with Piatti on its specific nature, which shows once again the importance of experience and learning.

Frankly I don't like the title but no other kid in long time has given me this kind of feeling. This doesn't mean anything of course.

To finish my thoughts for the day some points from an interview with the Gazzetta given before the Foro Italico.

Before Rome he stated that he had little practice on clay and rarely played on it in his youth. His mental approach to losses are 10 minutes of anger and then he goes at once to the coach to study what went wrong and why. After the shower he tries to rationalize and analyse to learn from the defeat. He doesn't know yet how he will react after a really important loss like a GS final.

He focuses on his performance not on the outcome, victories are only stepping stones along a long way. He likes that Piatti is a straight talker with which he can talk about everything, more so with him now that he is no longer 14 years.

Quote: Haste is the enemy of perfection, if you can achieve it a all...

So I guess all these "smart" coaches telling juniors not to play above their age group don't know what they're talking about after all.

I personally think Sinner has multiple slams in his future. Love watching his aggressive no BS approach to the game.

This chart is min-maxed on 1st Serve Return %. He's 6th in the world in the last 52 weeks. For reference, he's 52nd in 2nd Serve Return %, 20th in % of Return Games Won, and 21st in % of Break Points Converted. His overall Return Rating is 20th.

It is good to see some hard facts behind the guess. Zverev is the only guy taller then him in the 1st Serve Return % row and seems to stand somewhat further back, easing his return %. Personally I think he still has to learn read the various serves from the big guys on tour more to get better rates and has still room in his hands.

Sometimes he looks that he his too aggressive against the second Serve and could tend towards a better balance. Of course the better one knows the opponents server the easier is to make better decisions and gain percentage points.
