As a Federer and Nadal fan, it's been a pleasure to watch these guys as I grew up. They redefined the sport and what it is capable of. But for some reason there is a lot of Nadal hate on this forum? Any reason why?

No credit to Nadal what so ever.

Wimbledon 2008 for example, vast majority of people including fans, players, ex players, pundits, and experts regard that match as the greatest of all time. People here are very quick to say things like Federer missed some shots - well, if you watch any Federer match he misses shots, he has huge numbers of unforced errors because he goes for shots and that is what makes him so exciting to watch.

Anyway, Nadal proved his credentials because he competed with the greatest grass court player of all time during his prime for two years closely, and then beat him in 2008. Nadal showed over three years he was able to compete with Federer, and eventually even beat him on grass - remember Federer hadn't lost a set until the final of 2008.

For people that don't hate Nadal, in 2008 we saw a historic match between the two greatest players of all time gonig toe to toe. It shows Nadal's pedigree. No other player in history would have been able to beat Federer 2008 at Wimbledon, Sampras couldnt beat a 19 year old Federer so we have to pay huge respect to Nadal.

Like me, we should appreciate we get to watch Federer and Nadal gracefully play out the last stint of both their careers. They have changed tennis forever.

Zzzzzzz......No, what needs to happen is to have Federer further distance himself so Nadal can’t attach himself to Federer by proxy.

It's because the Federer fans are frightened of him. They fear he may take the record of Grand Slam wins from their idol, and they know Federer's terrible head to head record against Nadal -especially in the majors- is a serious black mark against Federer's claim on the title of 'Greatest of all time'.

It's pretty straightforward stuff.

Absolutely many reasons to be a nads fan. But if you cant see why a lot of people simply arent interested, care or just dont like him then your infatuated as the rest of the teenage girl nads fanclub on here headed by clay princess abd octopussy

To be clear i am not one of those rafa haters i like him but if you cant see that reasons such as

Time wasting, delaying, mto, retirements, cheating, grunting, being a grinder, tanking large parts of season (how annoying must it be to be a fan and try and see him live), on court coaching and a style of tennis that many simply dont like

Then you are infatuated and blind. Of course there are many reasons to like him and be a fan and these are tge reasons i see but if.you cant see the other side then u need ur head checked out

And @Spencer Gore lol im nit going to bother with a seperate post. He can have the slam count. The above is still true. And in no universe apart from hypothetical what if this happens is he the GOAT or does he have the slam count. And hes missed his boat anyway this era is so weak and he already has so many weak slams that his own fanbases weak era creation will destroy his claims of GOAT even if he has 50 slams. And his losing head to head to djoker, davedenko, mueller etc and beatdowns by a 36 year old will fill in the gaps

Because the immature Nadal fans trigger the immature Fed fans, who are greater in numbers. Occasionally the immature Djoker fans get annoyed because their hero doesn't get much recognition when the immature Fedal fans were flaming each other, though that was mostly when Djokovic was wrecking everything while behind in Slam count. I like to believe that the majority of fans of all players are perfectly reasonable.

Lastly Mury fans, well Mury fans GOAT.

OP What respect do you need? Nadal being called top 5 and clay goat is not enough respect to you?

So, anything but Nadal being considered the goat means lack of respect to you?

How about Nadal fans respecting other greats, how about that? Like Laver, Sampras, Borg? Nadal fans don't respect anything in history for them Laver is just some journeyman.

You have to show respect to earn respect. Not to mention, I would like to see just five Nadal fans to admit Fed is the goat. Talking about lack of respect. Winning alone doesn't get you respect. How about Nadal winning without time violations?

It was Federer who started the Laver Cup and Nadal only participated because it would bring him a lot of attention. When Nadal won the FO, Federer congratulates Nadal but when Federer won WB knowing how much it meant to Federer, did Nadal congratulate him. Nope.

It's basically FedWarehouse and you have to roll with the punches. You have to realize Rafa gave them the most painful moments of their Fedfandom and it is really one of the few blemishes on Fed's career.

To them it makes no sense that some clay courter, pirate looking caveman could beat their ethereal hero time and time again. The fringe Fed fans are insulted by the idea of anyone having the temerity to beat their idol. That's why they enjoyed 2017 so much as they somehow view Nadal's past wins as illegitimate.

They're absolutely terrified that Nadal might pass Roger in slams which is why they delegitimize any Nadal win.

Meaning no offence, but this kind of blanket statement is what I can't stand in the VB. I'm sure there are some who have this attitude, but why the assumption that one can't simply not be impressed with your hero?

For a fan of Nadal, of course not. Nadal fans want him to close the slam difference, for pretty obvious reasons, and if Fed is given the term "The Goat", by people like Chris Fowler, and other people want to give Nadal "top 5", it's pretty obvious to anyone who is not a partisan Fed-fan why that is not "enough respect".

There are plenty of nads and fed fans. OP is not one of them
Which has nothing to do with me or my comment.

I would personally be just fine if they end up so close at the end of their careers that people argue about who is better for the next 50 years.

I'll just wait and see first, but if I was a Nadal fan I'd just be happy with what he's achieved. King of Clay, ATG elsewhere.

Explain the last part. You aren't impressed with Nadal as a tennis player? I can understand a player not appealing to you for whatever reason but you're not impressed with 16 grand slams and 30 masters?

I personally don't enjoy Andy Murray's tennis but I can acknowledge that's he's a great player.

No, not as a Nadal fan, you wouldn't. That's not what fans do. They want their "player" to go as far to the top as possible, and that means closing the gap. I don't for a moment think that any Nadal fan here is not wishing for that. His fans see a possible 17th at the AO, with an even more likely 18th at RG.

Fedfans want another victory here, to pad the record to 20/16.

I PERSONALLY want one of them, not both, to make it to the final so that I don't have to feel split, as I did last year.

I don't enjoy Fedal matches.

No idea why any player is called the GOAT. But Fed has bragging rights in this era as long as he maintains the lead in slams. That's why what is happening right now is of such importance.

Yes I understand Nadal dealt Federer blows at crucial times, when it mattered. For example Federer after Australian 2009 cried, but after 2017, he said he wished they could have shared it because it wasn't as important for him.

But we have to appreciate they are both amazing. Federer for dominating, and re inventing the game and taking it new levels. Amazing play, aggressive hits the ball on the rise.

And we have to respect Nadal because he proved over numerous matches he was able to take the game to Federer on Grass and Hard, against the greatest of all time, this needs respect. Apart from Nadal, Federer dominated everyone else.

I started of being a Federer only fan, and disliked Nadal - but over time I just saw what he offers, the grit determination and how well he has played especially to beat Federer and I started admiring him also.

I second that + the grunting + the Vamos + the complete lack of style + the awkward technique. However, you can’t argue with his results. In a way tennis would be less interesting without him!

Right, so what I see a lot is VB insisting that 1) their guy is better and 2) if you don't agree you're a hater (eg, this thread).

They happen to have a point that plenty of fedfans are equally obnoxious!

Having positive opinions and respect for Nadal while being a Fedfan is common. Supporting both is contradictory, like supporting Real Madrid and Barcelona or Cavs and Warriors.
I always say this: A Fedalist (which I suppose you're one based on what you posted up there) is a fan of Federer and Nadal, but when the push comes to shove, they always stand with Nadal. Basically closeted Nadal fans who preach that they like both (Roger and Rafa).

Man, there are so many haters here, some days I think talking to just one non-hater is a victory.

I have the "Big Three" as obviously the best of this era, with final bragging rights not logical until all of them end their careers.

I can't see Novak getting past #3, only because of injuries. While he was in the middle of his GS (non calendar) run, I thought he might still get to the top of the slam count, or close.

I see it as Fed #1, Nadal #2 AT THIS MOMENT, but the difference in slams is not great, and with Nadal 5 years younger, it's not over.

If by some amazing move Nadal wins the AO and RG, then it becomes a different discussion.

Yes, Nadal fans don't understand Fed's genius and creativity and see no value in making it look easy. That's why they don't get why Nadal won't be considered goat.

It's a paradox, if they could understand, they would be Fed fans, they don't get that slam count is not even the main reason why Fed is considered so great.

The same way that people who don't play piano will understand why Chopin is greater than Lang Lang. Lang Lang is probably faster and more accurate, but Chopin invented music and didn't even practice much. Also, how Lang Lang butchers some of Chopin's pieces is crazy. But people who don't play piano at a high level, will never see that, that's the whole problem. They measure Rafa's rpm and Lang's hand speed and they think, wow he is the greatest.

No. Greatness does not come from making it look great.

Greatness comes from winning.

No, again. That's just wrong. You're talking as a Fedfan.

In the end people will look more than anything at three factors:

1. Slam count
2. Where the slams were won
3. H2H

Nadal is an absolute Warrior. This guy is a BEAST like tennis has never seen.

As a Fed fan, I was GUTTED when Nadal beat Fed at Wim 08 and AO 09.

But there is no doubt in my mind the guy is an absolute WARRIOR. Have never seen anybody like this guy. The guy is so freaking mentally strong. And he goes 100% like I've never seen. How many times do you hear tennis pundits pick Rafa for the "life" match?

Just an absolute beast. And also a gentleman. Very respectful to his opponents, which is not easy to balance when you're a top athlete in the world and your competitive juices are firing on all cylinders.

These two guys took the game of tennis to new heights in terms of playing style and popularity, and they did so as the best ambassadors you could hope for.

I think that, because of these two guys, the coming generations of tennis bode very well. How many kids out there were watching on tv thinking "I want to hit the forehand passing shot like him!" or "I want to hit a one handed backhand!"?

More importantly, to me, how many 12 year old kids saw the sincere compassion Rafa showed to Roger at the AO 2009 ceremony?

The guy ascended to the top of the sport, a mountain he had been climbing for many years of the most extreme dedication, and seeing his opponent heartbroken, he says "look at him" instead of "look at me."

Rafa Nadal is an ABSOLUTE LEGEND.
