Why T Paul is a tough match up for Carlos?

Probably because most people view Tommy Paul as a joke because of his name but he's actually a good player and Alcaraz is overrated and not unbeatable and can be tested by many above average players on the tour. Paul being one of them.

alcaraz has still not entered his prime, that's why......he hasn't yet figured out his stroke order for certain gamestyles......he will roll'em all over in couple of years time.......

Paul can move and cover the court in some insane instances like Carlos does. Paul can rip it on the move as well. Not to Carlos level of power and speed , but Paul takes the ball a bit early as well.
Paul is underrated and probably the best American player as well.

Finally some analysis, instead of he's not a tough match up and blah blah. Son, what happened to your Leopard DP?

they've had 3 close matches and it's not like Tommy Paul is a bad player, he's ranked #13 for a reason

last 20 years has made people think that being #1 means you're invincible but that's not normal
Even in the last 20 years, rarely were the no.1 players undefeated in every match they played. They all had a fair few players who troubled them each.

Agreed. He’s fast and able to reach balls while still retaining his balance. Add that to taking the ball early and taking time away from Carlos while having a game with a lot of variety and he’s a tricky opponent. In this match Carlos learnt to stay patient and keep the ball in play more waiting for chances rather than trying to finish points early.
Carlos needed this match to play himself into better form and solve the puzzle which he did.

I don't have time to watch non slam events, can someone tell me why T Paul is a nightmare for Carlos?
Even if you had all the time you need to watch non slam events, I can't tell you that because I am not even sure that T Paul is a nightmare for Carlos.

Tommy Paul is one of the most patient and mentally tough players in tennis. He is happy to play boring or hit junk balls to win. Also he doesn’t seem to get bothered when other players start smacking winners. He just move to the next point and patiently waits out the errors. He is also incredibly fast and fit.

Yes, Carlos is able to frustrate and outmaneuver many of his opponents, but he can't do this as easily against Paul.

He isn't.
Carlos just isn't in the mood to go to war with every single mug on the tour in every joke tournament.
And you can tell by the bazillion BP opportunities he has that if he just turned it up by a couple percent, he'd wipe the floor with Tommy Mug.
This is probably closer to the truth than I’d like to admit. Paul definitely bothers him though.

A 2-2 H2H is not a nightmare. Arguably Paul’s wins have been against an out of form Carlos. Tommy is a top player who has wins against a number of the best players.

I think that Paul's ability to take the ball early throws Alcaraz off of his game a bit. Carlitos can't remain consistent against Paul. This reminds me a bit of when Nadal faced Davydenko on hardcourts. Sometimes, odd matchups happen, which is what makes the sport so interesting.

Let's see how this rivalry pans out. My guess is that Alcaraz will figure out Paul, then start pulling away.

Respect Tommy Paul tbh. He’s a really good player on hard court, as evidenced by his AO semifinal and the fact that he’s beaten other top players as well.

Yes he got dumpstered by Djokovic in Australia but for the other 99 of the top 100 he’s a difficult match on HC.

I think it’s just belief. Alcaraz is great but he can’t play peak ultra level everytime, I think Paul understands that more than other players. He has that belief that he can beat him, and he has.

Raz is good but I guarantee if more players believed in themselves they might be able to do something.

Alcaraz is looking ahead to the business end. He sees Djokovic in the draw and knows he has to peak at the right time.
Can't put all your efforts into a 2nd or 3rd round. But the draw is definitely getting tougher as there are some good quality players like Hurcakz and Zverev there. And they could pose problems on this surface.

His name is dragging him down. I would change it to Tomas Paulanov
