Why tensions on crosses are much lower than those on mains?

I just finished a few racquetball string jobs with my brand new Gamma 6900 ELS String Machine with 2 Point SC Mount and measured their tensions with Tourna StringMeter. My reference tension is alwalys 35 for both mains and crosses and used "knot" function on machine to add additional 10% tension in last pull before knot. In general, tesions on mains are above 30 while tesions on crosses are below 30. It is consistent at least in my last 3 jobs. I noticed that clamp can not bite crosses as deep as it could since there would be a main string blocking clamp's bite. Is this the reason why tensions on crosses are lower than tensions on mains in general? If so, what's the best way to fix it?

It is possible your string could be slipping on the crosses but I doubt that is the problem. When I use the same string for mains and crosses I almost always tighten up the clamp for the crosses to get the same grip because the string does not go down in the clamp as far.

But let's look elsewhere for your 'issue.' The mains are closer together than the crosses are so the crosses will be at a larger agnel and hold the mains in place better. This is so the mains may not break as fast I assume. Anyway becuase the crosses are farther apart there will be easier to move so your meter will measure a lower tension. You really didn't think those gadgets were exact did you?

Those things were intended to give you a reference when measuring the mains. Use them they way they are supposed to be used and you will worry less.
 
Static friction between the mains and crosses yield lower tension for the crosses. You can move the cross with your fingers up/down to take this out of the equation when you tension the cross. Works only with CP machines.
 
So basically you guys saying it is normal that tensions on crosses are lower than on mains. So the factory recommanded tension range such as 28-32 lbs is referring to mains only? If that is the case, then I don't have to worry about lower tension on crosses?

No what I was saying is what I thought could be your issue. The recommented tension is for Mains (28) & Crosses (32.)
 
main tension always higher then crosses

It is normal that the tension in the mains is considerbly higher then in the crosses;
One reason was already mentioned: The friction between mains and crosses.

The second reason is that the tension in the mains rises when you tension the crosses. The mains are tensioned in a straight line and have to stretch when the crosses are tensioned.

Therefore it is quite normal that the tension in the mains is higher than the set stringing tension.
