yes, the thinking on this board tends to be so star-centric that people forget most of the players are sitting around for those two weeks -- or four weeks. And the weeks after (American) football ends and baseball begins are probably potentially good times for tennis to get some TV ratings. And there are byes here that give the players who are likely to have long runs a break2. The guys who designed the tennis calendar didn't think about making it as practical as possible for the same 2 or 3 guys to horde all the titles.
They should rejig the direct entry criteria to make it more current than the 6 week time lag. The 3rd seed in the qualifying draw had a ranking of 62 (from memory) which shouldn't happen in a 96 player event. That’s a one-off situation, as is Félix’s need to qualify in Miami after 3R in IW. He still did OK and is into his seventh match scheduled without any apparent weariness.
Perhaps they could make IW a genuine 2 week tournament by introducing a 128 player draw? Then leave Miami at 96 players so the IW finalists don't have to get to Miami and compete within 2 days. The more important question is why are IW and Miami 2 week tournaments?
Not exactly the same gap.Why there is no week gap b/w Indian wells and miami , rogers cup & cincinitti....
