Why Windshield Wiper Fh?

He does. Here is an example of one instance:

I would suggest checking out Hi-TechTennis.com and giving the trail a go.

That was in 2004, he goes through it more nowadays

I think I got the hang of this technique, but can't seem to generate a lot of power. Now that I think about it, I see a couple of kids using this technique.

I think Federer doesn't use a WW. I've seen many videos of the WW motion and he definitely does not do it. Will says the strings face forward or the net all the time, but Federer has a more classical swing, so his strings don't face the net all the time, and well it doesn't even look lek a windshield wiper anyways.

I believe that Fed still uses at least 2 or 3 different finishes on his FH shots. This is not at all unusual for many of the pros. It is not at all unusual for players with a SW or mild SW (extreme Eastern), such as Fed, to use both over-the-shoulder finish and the WW finish. Many players will also use a reverse follow-thru on shots out wide or in other situations. You may also see yet another type of abbreviated finish on some approach shots for some players.

3 Forehand Finishes

I've just posted a thread up (in 'tennis tips') re a big compilation of Fed fhs I came across. What I was surprised to notice was that the vast majority of his fhs finish up around the bicep area. This surprised me somewhat and led me to ask some Qs (including if this was simply the result of consistently hitting a WW shot? And, does everyone now aim to finish up around the bicep area?) BTW, The thread is called 'Fed finishes around bicep area every time? True? Do you?'

Oops my bad, I had the concept of the WW mixed or confused with something else, because federer doesn't take that vertical of a swing like blake or ferrer so I thought he didn't use it, sorry, it's all good now.

That's right.

In this video of the 2008 Wimbledon final Federer hits five topspin forehands. They're all WW.

Yeah you got it, like I said I had it misunderstood.

Do people at the 4.5-5.0 level all use windshield wiper?
Will it really help my forehand to go to the next level?
It's too late for me to make it an honest part of my game, but what the windshield wiper forehand allows you to do that a normal, over the shoulder follow through... well, not that you can't do it with that kind of follow though, it's just harder... is hit line drive groundstrokes with lots of spin. I feel like in the old days guys who hit with lots of topspin hit a loopier shot, more of an arc on it, but with windshield wiper stroke, you can hit a really spinny ball with a flatter trajectory.

It's funny how they talk about the "Windshield Wiper Forehand" like if it were some gadget or tool or something you turn off and on like some radio on your racket, when all it is is just a forward low to high swing, and to me at least, sometimes it comes out naturally

It is more than just a forward low to high swing. A ww forehand side swipes the ball, which puts side spin+topspin on the ball. The follow through will end up with the racquet head facing down by your left hip.

Just saying.. People should not try to imitate federer's winners...
I tried it and killed my wrist...
I was so happy I was hitting amazing winners until my wrist started hurting..
Federer goes over the ball with his wrist when he hits forehands... does he not?

You can imitate the fundamentals of a pro. That is fine. However, you have to remember the strength in their tendons, ligaments, and muscles have been built over time.

If you think you are only going to go out a couple times a week and try to execute what they do, you will pay the price somehow and in some way.

Awesome stroke, hitting faster shots that go more in plus my wrist no hurt. Now trying to hit the reverse thing shot.

But it cuts follow-through

What is result of WW making a follow-through shorter, less power?
How did people play 10 years ago without WW?
Why is it so necessary to play with WW?
