Why won't Venus Williams announce her retirement?

I've believed she should retire, but when and how is her business alone, not that of cackling, so-called "tennis fans" or anyone else. She does not owe you anything.

Well put.

...and in each case, no one was jumping on the player to make some formal announcement. Graf ust walked away, Seles took years to announce (and that was a-ok), and as you note, Capriati simply vanished, and yet there were no mobs demanding a formal retirement announcement as in the case with Venus. Hmm........

Exactly.

Agreed. These players owe people nothing, including a retirement announcement. They already did more than enough for fans by entertaining them for over a decade playing tennis, they owe them nothing else, and whether they offer them a trivial "I am retiring" official statement is purely up to them.

And yes there is an obvious bias/reason people are "expecting" this of Venus, while largely not for any of these other players. I can let others figure out what that is. Mind you there are some crazies who were upset with any of these people who did do this, including the stated above, but that is their problem.

Her sponsors don't want her to retire.
She does what her sponsors want.
End of story.

Has anyone checked her earnings for the past 5 years?

I'd say it's the other way around - Venus doesn't really need to announce her retirement because she already plays so little.

The purpose of the retirement announcement is practical - it's so everyone knows the player isn't going to be playing anymore. So fans don't buy tickets expecting to see them, so tournament directors don't expect to see the player on the entry list and don't reach out offering wildcards/incentives if they don't, and so on. It's a very useful announcement IF the player is stopping in the middle of a full schedule, or even a reduced one.

But in Venus's case - she's already basically not playing! No fans are be buying tickets expecting to see her (because it's been years since she's been a reliable presence anywhere), TDs don't give it a second thought when she's not entering their tournaments, advertisers aren't making promo campaigns that assume she's active, and so on. So an announcement isn't really needed.

As I said earlier, many players don't make a formal announcement of retiring, they just gradually give up until they stop. Seems like Venus will be like that.

If she never plays, why does it matter to her sponsors one way or the other?

Well, I guess her sponsors want to see her play so she can advertise their products (dress, watches etc.) . Given that she hardly plays at all now I'd be surprised if she still has any.
